UGEE Exam Strategy

IIITH UGEE is conducted to identify creative, research-driven students. The exam is designed in a way that doesn't evaluate you based on your formula recall capabilities but on how you think. To help you prepare for this special exam, here's a 3-phase strategy designed just for UGEE aspirants/candidates:

1. Phase 1: Master UGEE Pattern

Your actual preparation starts by reading about the UGEE exam pattern. Think of this as a manual that helps you understand how a tool or device can be operated. Similarly, you have to understand the exam pattern before you begin your study.

Not only understand the exam & paper structure but the intent of this exam. UGEE is conducted in two main stages. In the first stage, a written test for a duration of 180 minutes in included, which is distributed into two sections:

  • Subject Proficiency Test (SUPR) – This section tests your understanding of core subjects—Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics—at a level similar to JEE Main. The questions are conceptual and evaluate how well you understand the core concepts or principles, not just how fast you can solve them. SUPR — a computer-based test held for a duration of 60 minutes.
  • Research Aptitude Test (REAP) – The second part, which lasts for 120 minutes, is what makes UGEE a unique entrance test. It doesn’t focus on memorisation. Instead, it examines how well you can logically think, identify patterns, and solve unfamiliar problems in a creative manner. You could be asked to solve puzzles, analyse data, or figure out sequences—all in a short amount of time.

If you score enough or similar to the cut-off marks, then you are invited to the next round: the interview round. This is where your out-of-the-box thinking capabilities are examined. To understand this better, here's the simpler form: SUPR tests your concepts; REAP tests your mind.

2. Phase 2: Master the SUPR and REAP

For SUPR, you should have a strong foundation for using the NCERT textbooks. To get one step ahead, you can refer to the JEE Main level study materials. However, one key point to keep in mind is to choose understanding over memorisation.

When you are revising the Physics concepts or Maths, ensure you can apply them in different ways. For example, instead of memorising kinematic equations, try to learn how they change under different conditions. You can also try to solve mixed-topic MCQs, which will help you use the learnt concepts just like in the real exam.

REAP is critical; it tests your analytical thinking, pattern recognition, and problem-solving skills under pressure. To be prepared, engage in activities that require logical approaches daily, such as Puzzles, Sudoku, grid logic, number series, and more complex pattern problems. Make it a part of your daily life where you spend at least 30 minutes on such activities. Other than this, you can leverage A Modern Approach to Logical Reasoning” by R.S. Aggarwal, SRO’s aptitude tests, KVPY SA/SX papers, and some logical reasoning sets from CAT exams.

The whole purpose of REAP training is to train your brain to recognise new structures quickly.

3. Phase 3: Be Ready for the Battleground

After taking the written test, you need to be prepared for the actual battleground: the interview round. To be prepared for this round, you just need to master the method to explain difficult concepts in layman's language. In this round, they may be interested in knowing your favourite subject, one or two projects or topics you've explored other than the syllabus, and more.

Conclusion

To crack the IIITH UGEE exam, you are required to focus on more than just textbooks. This entrance test demands you to have a strong curiosity, deep thinking and consistent practice. Although this exam has a unique format because of UPR and REAP, you can have an effective preparation using UGEE previous year papers with solutions PDF.
