  • Question 1

Identify the type of irony in the following example:

Rapper Suga, of the record-breaking boy band BTS, is famous among fans for his quiet character and lack of SNS (Social Networking Site) updates. In a short skit, he ends up playing the role of a talkative corporate employee who is addicted to SNS.
    Solution
Irony is a figure of speech or literary device in which what actually happens is completely different or opposite from the reader or audience's expectations.
    Option A is correct.
Situational irony occurs when the actual result of a situation is totally different (often, the complete opposite) from what the audience expect the result to be. The setting here is the subject Suga - who is quiet and does not use social networking sites (such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.) - participating in a skit. While actors do play many different roles, of all the roles Suga plays, it's one that is his complete opposite. Thus there is situational irony.
Option B is incorrect. Dramatic Irony is often found when the audience is aware of something that the character is not. For example, the audience watches the villain of the movie enter the main character's empty house and hide in a dark room. Then the main character walks into the house, not knowing the villain is hiding there. But the audience does. It is ironic because the audience knows more than the character. In the given question, there is no way an "audience" could have predicted Suga receiving such a role.  Thus, there is no dramatic irony.
Option C is incorrect. Verbal Irony shows a contrast between what is said and what is meant. The most obvious thing to notice is that there is no dialogue in the question. No one is speaking. It only gives a situation. Thus, there is no verbal irony.
Option D is incorrect as there is no such thing as "paradoxical irony". Paradox and Irony are two different figures of speech.

    Directions For Questions

[passage-header]Read the passage carefully and answer the following question:[/passage-header]$$1$$ One would imagine that at the very first sight of the panther, deer, antelopes, and its other preys would just run for their lives. But nothing of this sort happens. They all stand their ground and make such a loud noise that the panther is left with no other choice but to leave quietly. I have seen a tiny chital baby standing in the middle of an opening in the forest, stamping its feet on the ground and shooing away a tiger. With the white of its erect tail showing, it kept up its shrill call until the tiger made itself scarce. No tiger in its senses would attempt to catch such an impertinent brat, just as you would not dream of catching an offending crow cawing away in your verandah.
$$2$$ While the panther sticks to cover and hugs the edge of the forest, the game animals, on the other hand, like to assemble right out in open vast grazing grounds. Open spaces, which the panther carefully avoids, are what the game animals deliberately seek.
$$3$$ It is difficult to describe the pandemonium kicked up by various animals when they spot or suspect a panther around. The chital strikes a shrill note, the kakar emits a deafening bark and the sambar rings a bell. The peacock on its perch, the jungle fowl on the ground, and the monkey on treetops, all join in the chorus of condemnation.

Identify the meaning of the word 'Pandemonium' (Para $$3$$).
    Solution
'Pandemonium' means a situation in which there is a lot of noise and confusion because people are frightened. Paragraph 3 explains that whenever animals spot or sense a panther around, a lot of noises amongst them become strong. 'Wild run' means uncontrolled. 'Uproar' means a situation in which a lot of people make a lot of noise. 'Superiors' means better than average. 'Partners' means one of the owners of the company.
Thus, option B is the correct meaning of the given word.

Choose the example that uses verbal irony from the following quotes from the Harry Potter series:
    Solution
Irony is a figure of speech or literary device in which what actually happens is completely different or opposite from the reader or audience's expectations.
Option A is correct. Verbal irony shows a contrast between what is said and what is meant. Though Harry is described as speaking sarcastically, there is verbal irony in what he says, particularly in the line "And [the Death Eaters would] love to have me". Harry says "love to have me" as if the Death Eaters would welcome him like a friend, but what he intends is the complete opposite: by "have me", he means that the Death Eaters would love to devour his soul. There is a contrast between what he said and what he actually meant.
Options B and C are incorrect as they sarcastic replies. Not verbal irony. The difference between sarcasm and verbal irony is that most sarcastic comments do not, in fact, contain a contrast between what is said and meant. Moreover, sarcasm is mainly used to ridicule the other person or express contempt. In B, there is no contrast. Harry is being truthful when he says there is no need for Snape to call him "sir". In C, too, Harry is telling the truth that he must not tell lies, just as Umbridge "taught" him. Moreover, there is an obvious tone of contempt and ridicule in both cases, which makes both options sarcastic replies.
Option D is incorrect as the answer lies in A.
  • Question 5

Read the following example and identify the type of irony being used:

A movie you are watching shows a woman jogging in the woods.  The next scene shows a mountain lion lying in wait down the path where the woman is jogging.
    Solution
Irony is a figure of speech or literary device in which what actually happens is completely different or opposite from the reader or audience's expectations.
Option C is correct. Similarly, in the given question, you (the audience) see that a woman is jogging in the woods and also that there is a mountain lion waiting to attack her. But the woman does not know this. Thus, it dramatic irony since the audience knows more than the character.
    Option A is incorrect.
Situational irony occurs when the actual result of a situation is totally different (often, the complete opposite) from what the audience expect the result to be. However, in this case, it is the audience who knows the result of a situation while the character doesn't. There is no surprising turn for the audience. Thus, there is not situational irony.
Option B is incorrect. Verbal Irony shows a contrast between what is said and what is meant. The most obvious thing to notice is that there is no dialogue in the question. No one is speaking. Thus, there is no verbal irony.
Option D is incorrect as the answer lies in C.
  • Question 6

Identify personification in the given sentence:
As he parked on the crowded street, his rusty car kissed the bumper of a Rolls Royce.
    Solution
Personification is a figure of speech, in which inanimate objects or abstract ideas are given human-like qualities; they're spoken of as if they're human beings. For example, "Opportunity knocks at the door but once", opportunity is an abstract idea that is spoken of as if it has hands to knock with. In the given sentence, "car kissed the bumper" is a personification, because the car is given a human quality, hence option C is correct. "Crowded street" describes a street, "rusty car" describes a car and "Rolls Royce" is the name of a car (company). Hence they do not function as personification and options A, B and D are incorrect.
  • Question 7

Select the word closest in meaning to the given words:
    Sway
    Solution
The word, 'sway' is a verb, which means 'move or cause to move slowly or rhythmically backwards and forwards or from side to side'. It also means 'control or influence (a person or course of action)'. The word, 'control' means 'determine the behaviour or supervise the running of something'. As both the words have a similar meaning, option A, 'control' is correct.

The word, 'pressure' is a verb, which means 'attempt to persuade or coerce (someone) into doing something'.
The word, 'deviation' is a noun which means 'the action of departing from an established course or accepted standard'.
The word, 'weight' is a noun which means 'the heaviness of a person or thing'.
As all the above three words are quite different in meaning from the word, 'sway', options B, C and D are incorrect.

  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Select the word closest in meaning to the given words:
    Rite
    Solution
The word 'rite' is a noun which refers to a religious or some other solemn ceremony or act. It is a social custom, practice, or conventional act. It means the same as the word 'custom', which is a traditional and widely accepted way of doing something in a particular society/place/time. Hence, option A, 'custom' is correct.

The word, 'correct' is an adjective which means 'free from error'.
The word, 'rot' is a verb which means 'to decompose' or 'to decay by the action of bacteria and fungi'.
The word, 'renowned' is an adjective which means 'famous'.
As all the above three words are quite different in meaning from the word, 'rite', options B, C and D are incorrect.
  • Question 9

  • Question 10

Choose the alternative which expresses the meaning of the given idiom/phrase.
    To move heaven and earth
    Solution
An idiom is a group of words whose meaning has been established through time and which cannot be deduced from the meaning of the individual words. The meaning is not literal.
Going by this explanation, the expression "to move heaven and earth" has nothing to do with life, death or literally moving something. Thus, options A and D are incorrect.
Option B is correct as the idiom means to do everything you can to achieve something. B is closest in meaning to the idiom.
Options C incorrect as the idiom has no history of being used in such a context.
