New Mangalore port is a deep water port at Panambur, Mangalore in Karnataka. It is currently 7^th largest port in India. It was established in 1974 and inaugurated by then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi.

Usually bulky freight or bulk cargoes are transported by water ways which are cheap and safe.

Bhilai steel plant is located in the state of Chhattisgarh and Rourkela steel plant is located in Odisha which are operated by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). These two fall under the proximity of Vishakhapatnam and hence Vizag port serves the need of transport of steel of these two plants.
