  • Question 1

Sediment that is deposited on floodplains and deltas by rivers and streams during seasonal flooding is called _______.
    Solution
Sediment that is deposited on floodplains and deltas by rivers and streams during seasonal flooding is called Alluvial soil.
Alluvium is loose, unconsolidated soil or sediment that has been eroded, reshaped by water in some form, and redeposited in a non-marine setting. Alluvium is typically made up of a variety of materials, including fine particles of silt and clay and larger particles of sand and gravel.
  • Question 2
    1 / -0
The soil formed by the deposition of silt brought by rivers is __________.
    Solution
The alluvial soil consists of various proportions of sand, silt and clay. Alluvial soils are formed by silt brought by rivers.

In which state of India is red and yellow soil found?
  • Question 4
    1 / -0
Lands not available for cultivation are called ________.
    Solution
Forest: a large area of land covered with trees and plants, usually larger than a wood, or the trees and plants themselves
Barren lands and waste lands:Barren vegetation describes an area of land where plant growth may be sparse, stunted, and/or contain limited biodiversity. Environmental conditions such as toxic or infertile soil, high winds, coastal salt-spray and climatic conditions are often key factors in poor plant growth and development.
Farrow land:  ploughed and harrowed but left for a period without being sown in order to restore its fertility or to avoid surplus production.
Net sown area. It is the total area sown with crops and orchards. It represents an area in which total crops are grown only once in a year.
  • Question 5

Which one of the following is a non-renewable resource ?
    Solution

Non-renewable: These are the sources that cannot be renewed and are available in limited quantities. Examples include coal, nuclear, oil, and natural gas.

As thermal electricity cannot be renewed if used once, it is a non-renewable source of energy.

  • Question 6

Rocks and metals are _____ resources.
    Solution

All those things which are composed of non-living things are called abiotic resources. For example, rocks and metals.

In which of the following States in Black soil found
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
In which of the following States Black soil is found?
    Solution
Black soil is mainly found in Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Malwa, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh. They are well known for their capacity to hold moisture and are rich in soil nutrients.
Hence, option $$C$$ is the correct answer.
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
In the Indo-Gangetic plains, the older alluvium is known as ___________.
    Solution
    The right answer is Bhangar.
    •  Bhangar plains are upland, and consist of older alluvial soil. Bhangar areas are less prone to flooding but are usually more sandy and less fertile as well.
    • Khadar plains are low lying and consist of new alluvial deposits and are often very fertile.
    • The rivers, after descending from the mountains deposit pebbles in a narrow belt of about $$8$$ to $$16 km$$ in width lying parallel to the slopes of the Shiwaliks. It is known as Bhabar. All the streams disappear in this bhabar belt.
    • South of Bhabar belt, the stream and rivers re-emerge and create a wet, swampy and marshy region known as Terai.
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
    Consider the following statements-
    (a) Alluvial soil are formed by sediments deposited by rivers.
    (b) Black soil is found in the dry and Semi-dry areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
    (c) Red soil cannnot retain much moisture.
    (d) Laterite soil is found over lava deposits in the Deccan.
Which of the above statements are correct?
    Solution
    • Alluvial Soils are formed by the deposition of silt by the rivers.
    • The black soil is formed in the Deccan region on account of climatic conditions here and the basalt rock which is the parent rock for this soil is also an important factor for the formation of black soil. Black soil is sticky and possesses high moisture retention capacity.
    • The main reason for laterite soils formation is due to intense leaching. Leaching happens due to high tropical rains and high temperatures. As a result of high rainfall, lime and silica are leached away, and soils rich in iron oxide and aluminum compound are left behind.
