  • Question 1

Post-mitotic phase of the cell in which active synthesis of RNA and proteins takes place is
    Solution
The $$G_1$$ phase, is the first of four phases of the cell cycle that takes place in eukaryotic cell division. In this part of interphase, the cell synthesizes mRNA and proteins in preparation for subsequent steps leading to mitosis.
Thus, D is the correct answer.
  • Question 2

Phase of cell cycle when DNA polymerase is active
    Solution
DNA replication takes place in S phase of interphase. DNA polymerase is responsible for DNA replication. Thus its activity will be maximum during S phase.
Hence B is the correct option.
  • Question 3

    Meiosis occurs in
    Solution
Megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis to form four haploid megaspores. The megaspore mother cell first divides to form a dyad which then finally forms a linear tetrad as a transverse wall is laid down after first meiotic division and similarly, second transverse division occur in the two dyad cells resulting in a linear tetrad.
Hence, C is the correct option.
  • Question 4

What occurs in germinal cells during gamete formation?
    Solution
The cell division which is responsible for gamete production is called meiosis. In meiosis, four daughter cells are formed from one parent cell. The produced gametes are haploid hence contain half the number of required chromosomes. The four cells are produced from two division processes that take place in meiosis.
    1. Reductional division: In this step, genetic material is decreased to half of its original amount hence called reductional division. The two resultant daughter cells are haploid in nature.
    2. Equational division: In this step, the two haploid cells produced from reductional division undergo equational division to form four new haploid daughter cells.
These two processes help in keeping the number of chromosomes same from generation to generation.
So, the correct option is A

    In telophase of mitosis
    Solution
    • In telophase, the chromosomes decondense no individual chromosome can be seen.
    • The chromosomes aggregate at opposite poles and their identity is lost as discrete elements.
    • The nuclear envelope assembles around the chromosome clusters.
    • Nucleolus, golgi complex, and ER reforms.
    • So, the correct answer is option C.

During cell cycle, two molecules of DNA present in chromosome during _________.

    $$G_1, S$$ and $$G_2$$ are stages of _________.
    Solution
In eukaryotic cells or cells with a nucleus, the stages of the cell cycle are divided into two major phases: interphase and the mitotic (M) phase. During interphase, the cell grows and generates a copy of its DNA. Under the interphase stage 3 stages are found:
    1. $$G_1$$ phase: During the $$G_1$$ phase, also called the first gap phase, the cell grows physically larger, copies organelles, and makes the molecular building blocks it will need in later steps.
    2. $$S$$ phase: In the $$S$$ phase, the cell synthesizes a complete duplicate copy of the DNA in its nucleus. It also duplicates a microtubule-organizing structure called the centrosome which helps to separate DNA during the M phase.
    3. $$G_2$$ phase: During the $$G_2$$ phase, the cell grows more, makes proteins and organelles, and begins to reorganize its contents in preparation for mitosis. $$G_2$$ phase ends when mitosis begins.
After these stages during the mitotic (M) phase, the cell separates its DNA into two sets and divides its cytoplasm, forming two new cells.
So, the correct option is A.

Meiosis occurs in ferns at the time of ________ formation.
    Solution
Answer is "Spores" i.e. option A
Fern is a diploid plant body. Meiosis leads to formation of cells that contain half the number of chromosome than parental cells. In ferns, these cells are the spores. So a spore is the product of meiosis in ferns.
Gametes, prothallus are formed at later stages of spore germination. Protonemal cells are found only in mosses and not ferns.
    Hence, answer is "Spores"
  • Question 9

    In mitosis, centromere divides during
    Solution
    • In mitosis division, the centromere of each chromosome divides into two so that each chromatid has its centromere.
    • The two chromatids begin repelling each other and separate completely to become the daughter chromosome.
    • The daughter chromosome move towards the poles of the spindle along with the path of their chromosome fibre.
    • In anaphase, the movement of chromosome the centromeres lead the path and form different shapes of chromosomes are V, J, L, I shaped chromosomes.
    • So, the correct answer is option C.
