    Photorespiration produces
    Solution
Photorespiration is a process which involves loss of fixed carbon as $$CO_{2}$$ in plants in the presence of light. It is initiated in chloroplasts. This process does not produce ATP or NADPH and is a wasteful process. It does not even produce any sugar.  Photo-respiratory reactions are operated in chloroplasts, mitochondria, and peroxisomes. Loss of $$CO_{2}$$ occurs in mitochondria. Photorespiration occurs usually when there is the high concentration of oxygen. Under such circumstances, RuBisCO, the enzyme that catalyzes the carboxylation of RuBP during the first step of Calvin cycle, functions as an oxygenase. Some $$O_{2}$$ does not bind to RuBisCO and hence $$CO_{2}$$ fixation is decreased. The RuBP binds with $$O_{2}$$ to form one molecule of PGA (3C compound) and phosphoglycolate (2C compound) in the pathway of photorespiration. Rather, it results in the release of $$CO_{2}$$ with the utilization of ATP. It leads to a 25 percent loss of the fixed $$CO_{2}$$. $$O_{2}$$ is first utilized in chloroplasts and then in peroxisomes. It decreases photosynthetic output.

Which of the following scientist is best known for his work on photosynthesis?
    Solution
Melvin Calvin,  is an American biochemist who received the 1961 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his discovery of the chemical pathways of photosynthesis (C3 Cycle).
So, the correct option is C. ( Melvin Calvin )
  • Question 3

Which type of process is photosynthesis?
    Solution
In the process of photosynthesis, green plants absorb solar energy which is converted to chemical energy. It synthesizes organic food from inorganic raw materials, which only the plant are capable of, the product of photosynthetic  primarily is the energy providing molecule glucose. This molecule is utilized by the plant for for all its activities and the energy stored in the molecule is transported down the food chain by means of starch, sucrose etc.
So, the correct answer is 'Energy transporter'

Which pigment acts directly to convert light energy to chemical energy?

    Solution
Chlorophyll a is termed as universal photosynthetic pigment as it is found in all photosynthetic plants except bacteria. It is also called primary photosynthetic pigment because it performs primary reaction of photosynthesis which involves conversion of light chemical energy. Other photosynthesis pigment chlorophyll b and carotenoids (carotenes and xanthophylls ) are called accessory pigment, as they absorb light energy of different wavelengths, broaden the spectrum of light absorption and hand over the energy to chlorophyll a through electron spin resonance. So, the correct answer is 'Chlorophyll a'.

PEP is primary $$CO_{2} $$ acceptor in
    Solution
In $$C_{4}$$ plants, initial fixation of $$CO_{2} $$ or carboxylation occurs in mesophyll cells. The chloroplasts of mesophyll cells possess enzyme PEP carboxylase (or PEP case) for initial fixation of $$CO_{2} $$ .The primary acceptor of $$CO_{2} $$ is phosphoenol pyruvate or PEP. It combines with $$CO_{2} $$ in the presence of PEP carboxylase (or PEP case) to form oxaloacetic acid or oxallocetate (OAA). So, the correct answer is 'C4'.
  • Question 6

During photosynthesis, light energy is converted into
    Solution
Photosynthesis is a process utilized by plants to produce glucose using carbon dioxide, water and light energy. Thus light energy is converted into chemical energy and stored in the form of glucose. This glucose can be converted into ATP by the process of respiration as and when needed.
Hence the correct answer is 'Chemical energy'.
  • Question 7

Which metal ion is a constituent of chlorophyll?
    Solution
    Magnesium is a constituent of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll are the green photosynthetic pigments. Five types of cholorophyll a, b, c, d and d and e occur in the chloroplasts of higher plants. Molecular formula of chlorophyll a, b ,c and d are $$C_{55} H_{72} O_{5} N_{4} Mg , $$  $$ C_{55} H_{70} O_{6} N_{4}Mg, $$    $$C_{35} H_{32} O_{5} N_{4} Mg$$  and  $$C_{54} H_{70} O_{6} N_{4} Mg$$ respectively . Chlorophyll e is a rare type found in some golden algae.So, the correct answer is 'Magnesium'.

    Green bacteria contain
    Solution
Green bacteria are the photosynthetic bacteria. They have chlorobium chlorophyll-660 as their primary photosynthetic pigment. This pigment have spectra of absorption of light similar to Chl-a. The bacteria also have Chlorobium chlorophyll-650. These bacteria can absorb maximum at both the wavelengths.
So, the correct answer is option C.

Assertion : Phototropism is a directional growth movement.

Reason : Phototrophic movement occur in the direction of light
    Solution
Phototropism is a paratonic directional growth movement of curvature which is induced and determined by the direction of light stimulus. Shoots grow towards the source of light hence called positively phototropic while roots grow from the source of light hence called negatively phototropic.
