  • Question 1

A man with blood group `AB' marries a woman with `O' blood group. In this situation:
    Solution
When a man with blood group 'AB' marries a woman with '0' blood group, then the blood group of children will be either `A' or `B' which differs from the parental blood group.
  • Question 2

Which of the following are found in the blood but not in the lymph?
    P - Lymphocytes
    Q - Erythrocytes
    R - Platelets
    S - Plasma proteins
    Solution
Blood and lymph both are fluid tissue that helps in transportation and immunity respectively. Blood consists of plasma and cells such as WBC, RBC, platelets, and plasma proteins. On the other hand, lymph contains salt, water, fat, and WBC. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cells. Thus, the correct answer is option D.
  • Question 3

The diagram shows a section through the human heart. Which blood vessels carry blood to and from the lungs?

    Solution
    • The labeled portion depicted by the number 2 is the pulmonary artery that carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs from the right ventricle of the heart.
    • The labeled portion depicted by the number 4 is the pulmonary vein that returns oxygenated blood to the left atrium of the heart.
Thus the correct answer is option D.
  • Question 4

Assertion : Einthoven is called "father of the electrocardiography".

Reason : The instrument records all the information from body surface.

  • Question 5
    1 / -0
Which of the following statement (s) is (are) true about heart?
    (i) Left atrium receives oxygenated blood from different parts of the body while right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from lungs.
(ii) Left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to different body parts while right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs.
(iii) Left atrium transfers oxygenated blood to right ventricle which sends it to different parts of the body.
(iv) Right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from different parts of the body while left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to different parts of the body.
    Solution
Humans show double circulation. The blood pumped by the right ventricle enters the pulmonary artery, whereas the left ventricle pumps blood into the aorta. The deoxygenated blood pumped into the pulmonary artery is passed onto the lungs from where the oxygenated blood is carried by the pulmonary veins into the left atrium. This pathway constitutes the pulmonary circulation. The oxygenated blood entering the aorta is carried by a network of arteries, arterioles and capillaries to the tissues from where the deoxygenated blood is collected by a system of venules, veins and vena cava and emptied into the right atrium. This is the systemic circulation. The systemic circulation provides nutrients, O$${_2}$$ and other essential substances to the tissues and takes CO$${_2}$$ and other harmful substances away for elimination.

There is no DNA in :
    Solution
    Correct Option: C
    Explanation:
Although RBCs are considered cells, they lack a nucleus, nuclear DNA, and most organelles, including the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. RBCs therefore cannot divide or replicate like other labile cells of the body. They also lack the components to express genes and synthesize proteins. Hence, they are called, Akaryotes.
  • Question 7

Compared to blood the lymph has
    Solution
Answer: (D) More WBCs and no RBCs.
    Explanation:
    • Lymph is a colorless fluid.
    • It has more WBCs and no RBCs at all.
    • This is the reason why lymph is colorless.
Hence compared to blood the lymph has more WBCs and no RBCs.
  • Question 8

Single circulation blood flows through the heart only once during one cycle of passage through the body. This is exhibited by
    Solution
Hint: Single circulatory system is present in organisms with 2-chambered heart (one auricle and one ventricle).

Part 1 - Definition - Single circulation system
    • The type of circulatory system in which the blood passes only once through the heart in each complete circuit of the body.
    • First, the blood will pass through the heart to gills, then after purification, blood will be distributed to different parts of the body.
    • In double circulation as in mammals, four chambers that completely separate the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood; it pumps only oxygenated blood through the body and deoxygenated blood to the lungs.

Part 2 - Two chambered heart
    • As the name suggests in a two-chambered heart, there are only two chambers: Atria (Auricle) and Ventricle.
Atria (receiving chambers) - are the first stops for blood entering the heart.
Ventricle (pumping chambers) - are the chambers that push blood out of the heart.
    • Animals with 2-chambered heart use gills for gaseous exchange (respiration).

Part 3 - Examples of organisms
    • Fishes have the simplest circulatory systems of the vertebrates: blood flows in one direction from the two-chambered heart to the gills and then the rest of the body.
    • Amphibians and reptiles have 3-chambered heart while birds and mammals have 4-chambered heart.

    Part 4 - Conclusion
    • From the above discussion, we can conclude single circulation is present in organisms with a 2-chambered heart which in turn is seen in fishes.
    • Labeo, hippocampus, exocoetus, and anabas belongs to class Pisces (fishes).
    • Chameleon, turtle, and draco (flying lizard) belongs to class Reptilia.
    • Hyla, rana, and salamander belong to class Amphibia while dolphin and whale belongs to class Mammalia.

Final step - Single circulation blood flows through the heart only once during one cycle of passage through the body. This is exhibited by Hippocampus, exocoetus, anabas.

  • Question 9

The blood leaving the tissues becomes richer in :
    Solution
Hint - Tissues perform cellular respiration and produce energy and releases some gas in the form of by-product.

    Part 1 - Cellular Respiration
    • Cells in our body perform cellular respiration to produce energy using glucose and oxygen as a precursor. In this process, carbon dioxide is produced as a by-product.
    • Chemical reaction - $$Glucose + O_2 \rightarrow ATP + CO_2$$

    Part 2 - Gaseous exchange
    • At tissue, the oxygen for the respiration comes from the haemoglobin present in the blood cells.
    • After the cellular respiration, the cells of the tissue releases carbon dioxide.

    Part 3 - Conclusion
    • The blood entering the tissue has a higher concentration of oxygen as compared to carbon dioxide.
    • Thus, the blood leaving the tissues has a higher concentration of carbon dioxide.

Final step - The blood leaving the tissues becomes richer in carbon dioxide.
So, the correct answer is option A.
  • Question 10

Lymph can be defined as -
    Solution
Lymph can be defined as blood minus RBCs and some proteins. The main site of lymph formation is interstitial space and normally the rate of lymph formation is equal to the rate of its return to the blood stream.

So, the correct answer is 'All components of blood except RBCs and some proteins'.
