If the DNA codons are ATG ATG ATG and a cytosine base is inserted at the beginning, which of the following will result?

    Solution
If cytosine is added in the beginning, the nucleotide becomes : CAT GAT GAT G. The complementary base pairs are - GTA CTA CTA C.

  • Question 3

    Genetic code consists of
    Solution
64 codons are present, each with a triplet codon. Out of  64 codons present, three are called as termination codons or non-sense codons.
  • Question 4

In the double helix model of DNA, what would be the distance between two consecutive base pairs?
    Solution
According to Watson and Crick model of DNA, the DNA molecule is made up of two helical DNA chains that are wound around the same axis. The hydrophilic backbones of alternating sugar and phosphate groups are present on the outside of the double helix facing the surrounding water. The nitrogenous bases, purine and pyrimidine are stacked inside the double helix. Each nucleotide base of one strand is paired in the same plane with a base of the other strand. Since, one complete turn of the double helix is 3.4 nm long and each of which has 10 base pairs, the distance between two consecutive base pairs should be 3.4/10 = 0.34 nm.
Thus, the correct answer is option D.
  • Question 5

Watson and Crick are known for their discovery that DNA
    Solution
According to Watson and Crick model, DNA molecule consists of two long, parallel chains which are spirally coiled around a common axis in a regular manner to form a double helix. Structure of DNA was explained by Watson and Crick as the molecule which contains heredity information for cells. Watson and Crick shared Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962.

  • Question 6

Number of nitrogenous bases in a codon is
    Solution
Codon is a sequence of three nucleotides, which together form a unit of genetic code in a DNA or RNA molecule. Each nucleotide contains one nitrogen base. So, there are 3 nitrogen bases present in each nucleotide. For example, AUG.

The process of formation of mRNA from DNA is known as
    Solution
Transformation is the transfer of genetic material from one bacterial strain to other without establishing a physical contact. Replication is the process of formation of daughter DNA using the existing DNA strand as the template. Synthesis of RNA using DNA strand as a template by RNA polymerase is termed as transcription. This process occurs in the nucleus. Translocation is the movement of mRNA between A and P sites of the ribosome during protein synthesis. The process of synthesis of polypeptides on ribosomes using the mRNA sequence is termed as translation. Thus, the correct answer is option C.
  • Question 9

    Purines possess nitrogen at
    Solution
    • Nitrogenous bases are of two types and they are purines and pyrimidines.
    • Purines are nine-membered double-ringed nitrogen bases that possess nitrogen at 1, 3, 7 and 9 positions. For example, adenine and guanine.
    • Pyrimidines are six-membered nitrogen bases that contain nitrogen at 1 and 3 position. For example, cytosine, thymine and uracil.
So, the correct answer is (C).

  • Question 10
    1 / -0
A DNA molecule that recognizes specific transcription factors that can stimulate transcription of nearby genes is depicted by
    Solution
The promoter is a cis-acting site present physically continuous with transcription unit and provides a binding site for RNA polymerase enzyme. Enhancers are the upstream activation site present within promoter and interact with protein other than RNA polymerase thereby regulating the activity of the promoter and increase the frequency of gene transcription. The operator is a DNA sequence present between the promoter region and the first coding gene. The main difference between a euchromatin and heterochromatin region lies in their DNA content; euchromatin is loosely packed DNA with higher gene concentration as compare to heterochromatin which is tightly packed and has less gene concentration, thus less DNA content. Being loosely packed, euchromatin is easily transcribed. Thus, the correct answer is option B.
