  • Question 1
    1 / -0
Identify the correct sequence of the given phrases, which can make a meaningful sentence:
    P. a
    Q. empty house
    R. boy walked
    S. into an
    Solution
The normal sequence of a sentence in active voice is: Subject followed by verb. The subject of a sentence should be a noun which performs the action. In the given phrase, the nouns are in part Q (house) and part R (boy). The verb (walked) follows the noun, 'boy' in phrase R. Hence, the boy must be the subject.
The article 'a' precedes a word which begins with a consonant sound. Hence, the word, 'a' should precede 'boy'.
The article, 'an' precedes a word which begins with a vowel sound. Hence, the word, 'an' should precede the word, 'empty'.
Given the above, the correct sequence is: 'A (P) boy walked (R) into an (S) empty house (Q)'. This is grammatically correct and makes a meaningful sentence. Hence, option B is correct.
Option A is incorrect as the word, 'empty' (which begins with a vowel sound) cannot be preceded by the article 'a'.
Option C: The article 'a' is a determiner and should be followed by nouns or noun equivalents. It cannot be followed by a preposition (into). Hence, this option is incorrect.
Option D: The article 'an' cannot precede the word, 'boy' (which begins with a consonant sound. Hence, R cannot follow P and option D is incorrect.

  • Question 2

The given conservation has mixed up sentences. Reorder them correctly and select the correct option.
    A. How long ago did you finish school?
    B. How long have you been working for in this shop?
    C. I've been working here since July.
    D. I finished school seven years ago.
    Solution
In this question, there are two questions and their respective answers. The key is to find out which is the first question, and then we can sort out the sequence accordingly. Keeping in mind the chronological order of the events as they happened, the question about finishing school should come first and then its answer. This is followed by the question about the person's work and its respective answer. According to these conditions, C is the correct answer.
Since none of the other options adheres to this sequence, options A, B and D are incorrect.

    Directions For Questions

Read the passage and answer the question that follows:
We all love to wear our blue jeans but what do we know about them? It all began in the Nevada region of the United States. In the 1850s, there were many people searching for gold and mining. This was called the Gold Rush. Miners had to dig deep to find even a little gold. They had to work very hard and for a long time. Their clothes tore easily. A miner's wife decided to get a sturdy pair of trousers for her husband. So, she went to a tailor named Jacob W. Davis and told him what she wanted. He was not an ordinary tailor. He used to stitch horse blankets, wagon covers and tents. Jacob understood what his customer wanted. It had to be strong cotton cloth and should not tear easily. He found some material called denim with a man named Levi Strauss. He stitched the first pair of denim overalls. To make the pair last longer, Jacob decided to fix small metal pins or rivets near the pockets, zipper and other areas. The overalls were tough and looked strong. Soon, everyone wanted a pair of riveted pants!
Davis decided to own the design. So, he became partners with Levi Strauss. Together, they got the denim overalls patented on 20th May, 1873 and Levi Strauss Jeans was born. There was no looking back from then on. Hollywood cowboy movies cast their actors in Levi's and made them famous all across America. They soon became a symbol of young, American culture. Some people felt that denim overalls were 'workers clothes' and not right for school. Yet, in 1959, a newspaper reported that 90% of young Americans were wearing denim pants everywhere except to bed and church. By the 1960s, the name 'jeans' was given to the blue overalls. Europe and parts of Asia wanted them too and they became famous worldwide. Soon, people of all ages wore them. In 1969, a magazine reported that denim is one of the oldest fabrics but will remain eternally young. How true!

How was Jacob Davis different from other tailors?
    Solution
Option B: As it's mentioned in the line from the passage: "Jacob W. Davis... was not an ordinary tailor. He used to stitch horse blankets, wagon covers and tents.". It justifies the statement in B, hence it's the correct option.
Option A: This line isn't mentioned in the passage, hence it's the incorrect answer.
Option C: Jacob Davis did not invent overalls in Europe, but in the United States: "It all began in the Nevada region of the United States." Hence C is incorrect.
Option D: Similarly, Jacob Davis did not patent the jeans alone: "Davis ... became partners with Levi Strauss. Together, they got the denim overalls patented...". Hence D is incorrect.
  • Question 4

The given conversation has mixed up sentences. Reorder them correctly and select the correct option.
    A. I'm going to visit my cousin.
    B. Do you have any plans for the vacation?
    C. In a remote village in Himachal Pradesh.
    D. Where does she live?
    Solution
There are two questions and two answers in this conversation. The key is to find which question comes first. Logically the person would first ask if he/she has any plans for the vacation, to which he/she replies that he/she is going to meet his/her cousin. The next question then would be about where the cousin lives, the answer to which is, a remote village in Himachal Pradesh. According to this pattern, option C is the correct answer, making options A, B and D incorrect.
  • Question 5

Select the most suitable alternative to complete the following statement:
When Edison tried his experiment on his servant girl.
    Solution
Edison was 8 years old when he thought that humans could fly. He asked his teacher why humans can't fly when birds can. His teacher said that humans had no wings like birds, but Edison didn't give up on the idea. Later, he saw a bird eating worms and flew right after eating. He thought humans can fly if they eat worms. He quickly smashed some of the worms and gave it to the servant girl. He asked her to drink it and said that if she drank it, she would fly. When she actually drank the liquid, she fell ill instead of flying. Thus option C is the correct answer.
  • Question 6

Arrange the sentences in a logical order to form a complete and meaningful conversation:
    a. How could he choose things so quickly?
    b. My friend selected everything he needed very quickly.
    c. But his selections were fantastic.
    d. He has been in a marketing job for many years.
    Solution
From the sentences a, b, c and d, sentence 'b' sounds introductory. It begins the topic, that the person's friend selected everything quickly. This is a general statement, which is then expanded by the other sentences that follow.
    Hence, 'b' comes first.
Sentence 'c' follows 'b' as the word 'selection' in 'c' refers to the words 'selected everything he needed' in 'b'.
Sentence 'a' follows 'c' as this question is in response to the first two statements. The question is asked by a second person.
Sentence 'd' follows 'a' as this statement is an answer to the question asked in 'a'. The answer is given by the first person who started the topic.
Hence, the correct sequence is: b, c, a, d. This can be seen in option C, hence it is correct.
Options B and D: Sentence 'a' cannot come first, because it asks a question that isn't introductory or does not seem to start the topic by itself. The words 'so quickly' mean that the topic has already been started. Hence 'a' cannot come first in the sequence. So, options B and D are incorrect.
Option A: Similarly, sentence 'c' also cannot come first, because 'but' suggests that it is a continuation of some topic. Hence option A is incorrect.

'As a century draws & to a close, people start behaving much like people coming to the end of a long life. People approaching death often start reflecting on the events of their lives. Similarly, people alive in 1999_________'
Which of the following most logically completes the paragraph above?
    Solution
The passage states that the behaviour of people at the end of the century is similar to the behaviour of people that are at the end of their lives. Just as those who are at the end of their lives start reflecting on the past events of their start reflecting on the past events of their lives similarly, those who are alive in 1999(i.e. those who are at the end of the century ) will reflect on the events of the century (twentieth) . thus option(a) is correct .
  • Question 8

'Friendship was indeed a value for the villagers, more for men than for women. Two good friends were said to be 'like brothers' (literally, 'like elder brother-younger brother', annatamman-dirahage). I heard this expression several times and I could not help recalling the statement of an elderly English colleague who had told me that he and his brother were very close and had written to each other every week. He had added, 'We are very good friends.' That is, friendship connoted intimacy in England while in Rampura (as in rural India everywhere), brotherhood conveyed intimacy'.

Which of the following best summarizes the conclusion of the argument of this paragraph?

    Solution
The conclusion of the argument is mentioned in its last lines " That is, friendship connoted intimacy in England while in Rural India, brotherhood conveyed intimacy." Therefore, the attitude of people of England towards brotherhood and friendship is different from that of rural India. So ,option (b) is correct.
  • Question 9

Arrange the sentences in the correct sequence.

    (i) The ripples looked enchanting in the light of the Sun.
(ii) We went to the pond.
(iii) We flung stones to create ripples.
(iv) We stood knee-deep in the muddy water of the pond.

    The best sequence is
    Solution
Here, the sequence [ii-iv-iii-i] is the only one that makes for a coherent paragraph: We went to the pond. We stood knee-deep in the muddy water of the pond. We flung stones to create ripples. The ripples looked enchanting in the light of the Sun. Thus, option B is the answer.
