  • Question 1
    1 / -0
Fill in the blanks with correct words that fit in the sentence logically and grammatically from the options given below:
I have____ liking for cartoon movies. I hardly ever watch _____ DVDs of cartoon movies I have at home.
    Solution
'Much' and 'Little' are used with uncountable nouns, while 'Few' and 'Many' are used with plural nouns.
'Any' is used to refer to one or more of a thing or a number of things, no matter how much or how many. It is also used in negative sentences.

In the sentence liking is an uncountable noun, therefore 'little' is the suitable adjective to be used as the second part of the given sentence says that subject hardly watch the DVDs.
Also 'any' is the suitable adjective to be used with the DVDs as more than one DVD is being referred to.

Therefore option C is the correct answer.
  • Question 2
    1 / -0
    Correct the following sentence.

Of all the other students, she is the most promising. [Intermediate]
    Solution
In the given sentence, the use of "other" is incorrect, because we want to convey that she is the 'most' promising among all the students. When we use 'other', she is excluded from the comparison with the students. Thus, option D is correct.
Option A and B are incorrect, as due to the use of 'other', she is excluded from the comparison with other students.
Option C is incorrect, because the use of 'more' denotes that she is the more promising students than others, but it doesn't mean that she is the most promising, which is something that the given question wants to convey.

  • Question 3
    1 / -0
Choose the correct word from those given in the options

We have only a _____ oil left for the car.
    Solution
'Much' and 'Little' are used with uncountable nouns, while 'Few' and 'Many' are used with plural nouns. Here, oil is an uncountable noun. This rules out option B. Since the word 'a' preceeds the blank, only option A) Little may be used to fill in the blank correctly.

    Directions For Questions

[passage-header]Read the passage given below and answer the question that follows:[/passage-header]There was __(1)__ ancient temple in a village. As with all temples, here too there was __(2)__ huge statue of God which was covered with precious jewels and gold. __(3)__ dark night, a burglar scaled the temple walls and ran off with all the jewels. The police are still on the __(4)__ for the culprits who have escaped with the __(5)__.

    ...view full instructions

Fill in blank (2) with a suitable option:
    Solution
The subject or noun which is central to the passage is the statue. The first option 'this' modifies the noun so that we know which specific statue is being spoken about. 'This' refers to the specific statue, which is there in the temple. Hence it's the correct option. Option B isn't correct because the noun is a specific noun and it does not begin with a vowel. 'The' is used when the noun is definite and it's been mentioned before, but over here the statue has not been mentioned in the beginning so 'the' is incorrect in this context. If 'some' is used instead of 'this' it would not correlate with the passage because the statue is specifically described. Instead, 'some' implies that the statue is not specified.

    Directions For Questions

[passage-header]Read the following conversation and answer the given question:[/passage-header]Neera: Hi, Amina! __(1)__
Amina: Well, __(2)__ I suppose. I mean, the starting time's great.

    Neera: Why's that?
Amina: It doesn't start until noon, so I don't have to get up early, and I needn't set my alarm and all that.

Neera: Cool! But then, you have to work late, right?
Amina: Yeah, __(3)__. Also, we aren't allowed to leave till the last customer's gone, and sometimes that's around midnight!

    Neera: __(4)__!
Amina: And we are supposed to speak really carefully to customers and say things like "Have a nice day now".

    Neera: Yuck!
Amina: And we have to wear stupid hats!

    Neera: __(5)__.
Amina: The worst thing is you don't get a moment's rest to sit down or anything.

    Neera: Mmmmm... __(6)__
Amina: No, hopefully, I'll find something better, and I'll move on.

    ...view full instructions

Which phrase is most suitable for Neera's reply i,e blank no (5) _____?
    Solution
Descriptive adjectives are types of adjectives that are used to express the size, colour, or shape of a person, a thing, an animal, or a place. They are used to provide more information to a noun by describing or modifying it. The adjectives that are used to describe the nature of a subject or a noun or showing the kind or quality of nouns or pronouns are called Adjective of Quality

In this sentence, the place where Anima mentions about the hat she uses the word "stupid" which describes the hat. This can be mentioned as the descriptive adjective or the adjective of quality.

Option A: The first option is inappropriate because it is given "That sounds fun" but they word "stupid" does not go with fun. It is completely the opposite. This is not right choice.

Option B: Seems to be a better option as Neera says "You're joking". The word "stupid" for the hat describes that wearing a hat is extremely silly, weird and that Anima doesn't like it. This is pretty unbelievable as well for Neera and "You're joking" matches as a reply for Anima's statement.

Option C: "That must be heavy" is not at all the answer as "heavy" sounds inappropriate. Nothing as such has been mentioned which is heavy that is having weight or in other sense is tiresome.

Option D: "You must take a picture" sounds a little rude from Neera's side as it is understandable that the hat is not good and that Anima does not like it.

The option that suits the best is "You're joking". So Option B is the answer.

    Fill in blank (12)_____________.
    Solution
With tangible nouns (things you can touch and see), we prefer 'big' or 'large'. With intangible nouns, we prefer to use 'great'. 'Wide' is used when we describe something that is broad. 'Full' is used to indicate something that is containing or holding as much as it can. 'Sense of relief' is an intangible noun as it is an emotion. So, the correct answer is option A) great.
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
Identify the option that can be used with all of the given words:

    Luminous, incandescent, bright, sparkling
    Solution
Luminous is an adjective which means something that is bright or emits light. Incandescent means something that emits light as a result of being heated. Bright means something that reflects or emits light, and sparkling means to shine brightly. All these words mean almost the same thing, although they have other meanings too. But the option which is related to all these adjectives is the last option, 'lights'. The face can be bright (pertaining to joy) or sparkling (energetic or ecstatic), but cannot emit light on its own (luminous and incandescent). The face cannot be incandescent (enraged), but the person can. A speech can be bright (witty) and sparkling (witty and brilliant), but cannot be luminous or incandescent. Cloth can be luminous or bright in terms of colour (fluorescent) and sparkling in terms of glitter and jewels, but cannot be incandescent (emotion). Since only the last option can be used with all four of the given words, Option D is correct and the others are not.
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Choose the correct word from those given in the options.

You won't need ______ advice before you go to the new hostel.
    Solution
'Few' and 'Little' are used in positive sentences while 'much' and 'many' are used in negative sentences. Also, 'much' and 'little' are used for uncountable nouns and 'few' and 'many' are used for plural nouns. The given sentence is a negative sentence and 'advice' is an uncountable noun. So, the most appropriate asnwer is option A) Much.

Fill in blank no. (4) with the most suitable phrase from the options given below.
    Solution
Exclamatory adjectives are words or phrases that express sudden or strong emotions.
The passage is a conversation between two individuals, Neera and Amina. From Amina's dialogues, one can figure that she is complaining about her work and isn't happy.
The sentence in question is: Also, we aren't allowed to leave till the last customer's gone, and sometimes that's around midnight!
The phrase that must follow is a reaction to this sentence. Since the sentence expresses displeasure, the reaction too must be negative.
Options A and C express delight, both are positive reactions, but they cannot be given to a negative statement. (lines that support negative meaning: "yuck!", "The worst thing is..." and "I'll hopefully find something better...")
Hence, A and C are incorrect.
Between options B and D, the latter is more suitable. 'Oh no, that's awful!' is a reaction to something that is awful, terrible. The sentence before the blank (4) states something that would be regarded as awful. Hence, option D is correct.
'No, that's terrifying' refers to something that is terrifying (cause fear or terror; it does not mean the same as 'terrible'). The sentence 'Also, we aren't allowed..." does not indicate the emotions of fear or terror. (Moreover, 'No, that's terrifying' is not a reaction, as the word 'oh' is essential for an exclamation) Hence, option B is incorrect.
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Fill in the blank with the most suitable option:
_____ old books are missing from the book shelves.
    Solution
'Much' is an indefinite numerical adjective which is used for uncountable nouns, hence it is an incorrect answer because books are a countable noun. 'Enough' is a positive adjective implying that the numerical strength of the noun has been reached the required amount or fulfills a requirement of some form, hence it is an incorrect option. 'Several' refers to a countable noun, in this case being the books, this is the correct answer. The adjective 'lot' is incomplete without 'of'. If 'lot of' was used, it would be correct, otherwise it's incorrect.
