Read the following dialogues and fill the appropriate word for blank 1.
    Solution
Indirect Speech is used to report something in our own words.
The given example is an example of Interrogative Questions. Indirect speech is formed by using 'ask' + question word + clause.
The clause will have the question, in normal word order and with the necessary tense change. The given sentence is in the simple past tense which should be changed to past perfect tense.
The sentence would become: Ria asked Priya why she had not attended school the previous day.
Thus, option B is the correct answer according to the rules.
  • Question 2
    1 / -0
Change from indirect speech to direct speech:
She expressed her desire to meet her father before she left for her holiday.
    Solution
The given sentence expresses a desire.
In the direct speech, the reported verb must be in the present tense as an infinitive has been used in the indirect speech.
Thus, 'desired and 'wished' are in the wrong form of the tense. We can thus eliminate options B and C as incorrect answers.
In the direct speech the sentence must be,
She said, "Oh! I wish to meet my father before I leave for my holiday."
Thus option a is the correct answer.

  • Question 3
    1 / -0
Change from direct to indirect speech.
"We were living in Paris", they told me. [Intermediate]
    Solution
Indirect speech is used to report what someone has said. It is presented without inverted commas.
Past continuous sentence changes to past perfect continuous tense. The structure is: Subject + had + been + verb + ing + object.
Thus, the sentence would become: They told me that they had been living in Paris.
Hence, option B is the correct answer.
  • Question 4
    1 / -0
Change from indirect speech to direct speech:
Divya said she had been playing badminton with Rhea.
    Solution
Direct speech is used to report what somebody has said in inverted commas.
Past perfect continuous sentence changes to past continuous tense. The structure is: Subject + was/were + verb + ing + object.
Thus, the sentence would become: Divya said, " I was playing badminton with Rhea".
Hence, option A is the correct answer.
  • Question 5
    1 / -0
Fill in the blank with the correct passive form of the verb given in the bracket:
All these orchards ________  by the owner last year. (sell)
    Solution
The verb in the given sentence is 'sell.' In the passive voice, the past participle form of the verb (sold) is used. The words 'last year' tells us that the sentence is in the past tense. The past tense forms of the verb in passive voice are:
    i) Simple past: was/were sold
ii) Past continuous: was/were being sold
iii) Past perfect: had been sold.
The words 'have sold' represent the verb in active voice in present perfect tense. Hence, option A is incorrect.
The words 'has been sold' represent the verb in the passive voice, but in present perfect tense. Hence, option B is incorrect.
The words 'were sold' represent the verb in passive voice in simple past tense. Hence, option C is correct.
The words 'are being sold' represent the verb in the passive voice, but in present continuous tense. Hence, option D is incorrect.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
Select the correct option to complete the sentence in indirect speech:
The examiner said to Rohit, "Can you solve this sum?"
The examiner asked Rohit ___________ that sum.
    Solution
As the given question is in the simple present tense, we will convert it into a simple sentence in the simple past tense in the indirect speech.
Option A - 'If could he solve' is grammatically incorrect, as 'could he' sounds like a question and it shouldn't have been placed after 'if', which is a conditional word. Thus option A is incorrect.
Option C - 'If you could solve' is incorrect as we can't use the same pronoun 'you' in the indirect speech. We must use another pronoun according to the name or the object 'Rohit'. Thus option C is incorrect.
Option D - 'If you can solve' can't be used here, as 'can' is used to represent simple present tense. Thus option D is incorrect.
Option B - 'If he could solve' is correct as we always use 'if/whether' instead of 'that' while converting a question to a sentence in the indirect speech. Also, 'could' is the past form of 'can' and 'he' is used for 'Rohit'. Thus option B is the correct answer.
'The examiner asked Rohit if he could solve that sum.'
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
From the below options, identify the sentence which is in the passive voice:
    Solution
A sentence is in active or passive voice depending on whether its verb is in active or passive voice. A verb is in active voice when its form shows that the subject does something or some action. A verb is in passive voice when something is done to the subject.
In option A, the subject is "We" and the subject performs the action "elect". It is in the active voice, and thus, incorrect.
In option B, the subject is "She" and the subject performs the action "has won". It is also in the active voice, and thus, incorrect.
In option C, the subject is "Our leaders". They "are elected" i.e., the action is performed on the subject. The doer of the action is "us". Hence this sentence is in the passive voice, and option C is correct.
In option D, the subject is "Elections" and the action ("happen") is performed by the subject. It is in the active voice, and thus, incorrect.
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Select the correct option to complete the sentence in indirect speech:
Arjun said, "Raju plays badminton everyday."
Arjun said that Raju __________ badminton everyday.
    Solution
As the given sentence is a general fact, it should always remain in the simple present tense even in the indirect speech.
Option B - 'Played' is the past form of the verb 'play' which is used to form the sentence in the simple past tense. Hence, option B is incorrect.
Option C - 'Will play' is used to form the sentence in the simple future tense. Hence, option C is incorrect.
Option D - 'Is playing' is used to form the sentence in the present continuous tense. Hence, option D is incorrect.
Option A - 'Plays' is the third person singular form of the verb 'play', which is used to form the sentence in the simple present tense. As the subject is the third person, we can use 'plays' here. Thus option A is the correct answer.
'Arjun said that Raju plays badminton everyday.'
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
Select the correct option to complete the sentence in indirect speech.
Jerry said to Tom, "May I take this piece of cheese?"
Jerry asked Tom if _________ that piece of cheese.
    Solution
Indirect speech is used to report what somebody has said without inverted commas. 'This' changes to 'that' and 'may' changes to 'might'. The given sentence is in request form which changes to an assertive sentence by converting 'said to' in 'asked'. Hence, option C is the correct answer.
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Select the correct option to complete the sentence in indirect speech:
Dr. Paul said to John, "You have a viral infection."
Dr. Paul informed John that he _________ a viral infection.
    Solution
As the given sentence is in the simple present tense, we must convert it into simple past tense in the indirect speech.
Option B - 'Did has' is grammatically incorrect as 'did' is used in the past tense and 'has' is used in the present tense. We do not use two helping verbs in two different tenses in the same sentence. Thus option B is incorrect.
Option C - 'Had had' means - the first 'had' is to explain the sentence in the past tense and the second 'had' is used to explain 'possession'. It is used in the past perfect tense. As the sentence has to be in the simple past tense, we can't use 'had had' here. Thus option C is incorrect.
Option D - 'Have' is used in the simple present tense or present perfect tense. Thus option D is incorrect.
Option A - 'Had' is used to explain the sentence in the past tense. It is used to convert 'have' to 'had' in the indirect speech. Thus option A is the correct answer.
'Dr. Paul informed John that he had a viral infection.'
