Liquid-liquid mixtures can be seperated by :
    Solution
Distillation is used for the seperation of mixture containing two miscible liquids that boil without decompostion. Both liquids are seperated based on the difference in their boiling point.

Name the change of state in which naphthalene changes into vapour:
    Solution
Sublimation is the transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas phase without passing through the intermediate liquid phase.

  • Question 3

How would you obtain pure ammonium chloride when it contains potassium chloride as an impurity?
    Solution
A mixture of ammonium chloride and potassium chloride can be separated using the process of sublimation. In this case, the sublimable temperatures of ammonium and potassium chloride differ widely. Between the two, ammonium chloride has a lower sublimable temperature. Therefore, it sublimes first followed by potassium chloride.

Method used to separate Petrol from crude oil is:
    Solution

The complex mixture of hydrocarbons in crude oil can be separated into fractions by the technique of fractional distillation. The laboratory demonstration of the fractional distillation is illustrated on the right diagram. As the crude oil vapour ascends the fractionating column the highest boiling liquid hydrocarbons condense out and the lowest boiling hydrocarbon liquid's vapour exits the top of the fractionating column and enters the condenser and runs into the collection tube. In this way, we can distil over progressively higher boiling fractions, which are themselves narrow boiling point ranges of different hydrocarbons of similar carbon chain length e.g. C6 to C8 etc.
Hence, the process of separation of petrol from crude oil is given by option C,

  • Question 5

Name a technique used to separate : Petrol and water
    Solution
Use a separating funnel since the petrol floats above the water.Just let the mixture stand. Petrol and water are not soluble, so they will eventually separate. Since the petrol is lighter than the water, it will form a layer on top, and may be drawn off.Petrol will form at the top of water as it is not as heavy.

Pure iodine can be obtained by the process of ______________ .
    Solution
Iodine can be separated by the process of sublimation. Sublimation is the process of conversion of material from a solid state directly to a gaseous state. Iodine undergoes sublimation and the vapour form can be collected and solidified to obtain pure Iodine.

Benzene and water can be separated by _____________ .
    Solution
A mixture containing water and benzene can be separated into its constituents with the help of separating funnel. Water and Benzene are not miscible with each other, so they can be separated using separating funnel where the heavier liquid (water) will form a lower layer and lighter liquid (Benzene) will form the upper layer.
  • Question 8

Ammonium chloride is separated from a mixture of sodium chloride and ammonium chloride by the process of _____________.
    Solution

Ammonium chloride is separated from a mixture of sodium chloride and ammonium chloride by the process of sublimation. Ammonium chloride can be sublimed whereas sodium chloride cannot be sublimed. When a mixture of sodium chloride and ammonium chloride is heated, ammonium chloride changes its state from solid to vapour. The vapours of ammonium chloride are then condensed on the cold surface. Sodium chloride is left behind.

Hence, the correct option is $$B$$.

  • Question 9

Which of the following is not colloid?
    Solution

    Correct Answer: Option D

    Explanation:

In colloidal solution the solute particles are larger in size and are able to show the Tyndall effect.

Milk, muddy water, and blood have their solute particles larger in size.

Also, they shows Tyndall effect. Therefore they are colloidal solutions.

A teacher instructed four students $$A, B, C$$ and $$D$$ to prepare a suspension of chalk in water. The students prepared suspension in the following manner:
Student $$'A'$$ places a piece of chalk in water.
Student $$'B'$$ places powdered chalk in water.
Student $$'C'$$ places powdered chalk in water and then shakes the mixture vigorously.
Student $$'D'$$ places powdered chalk in dil. $$HCl$$.

Which of the students followed the correct way of preparation of suspension?
    Solution
Dissolving chalk powder in water results in the formation of a suspension. Stirring it for sometime ensures uniform dispersion of the chalk particles in water.

Chalk powder does not dissolve in water. It just forms a suspension and after some time settles down under the influence of gravity.

    So, option $$C$$ is correct.
