The compounds [Cr(H2O)6]Cl3 and [Cr(H2O)4Cl2]Cl.2H2O exhibit

    Solution

Hydrate isomers differ by whether water molecules are directly bonded to the central metal atom/ion or are merely present as free water molecules in the crystal lattice. In the first complex the 6 water molecules are directly bonded to the central metal whereas in the second complex 2 water molecules are present as water of crystallisation and 4 water molecules are directly bonded to the central metal. So these exhibit hydrate isomerism.

  • Question 4

The correct IUPAC name of [Fe(C5H5)2] is

    Solution

C5H−5 is cyclopentadienyl ligand. Name of ligand is written first followed by the name of the central metal and its oxidation state in paranthesis in roman numerals. C5H5- carries -1 charge and there are two such ligands. The overall charge on the complex is 0 so to balance the -2 charge of the ligands iron must be in +2 oxidation state. Hence, the IUPAC name of the complex is

    Bis(cyclopentandienyl)iron(II)

The metal-carbon bond in metal carbonyls possess

    Solution

The metal-carbon bond in metal carbonyls possess both σ and π character. The M–C σ bond is formed by the donation of lone pair of electrons on the carbonyl carbon into a vacant orbital of the metal. The M–C π bond is formed by the donation of a pair of electrons from a filled d orbital of metal into the vacant antibonding π* orbital of carbon monoxide. The metal to ligand bonding creates a synergic effect which strengthens the bond between CO and the metal.

What is used as the complexing agent in volumetric analysis of ions like Mg2+and Ca2+?

    Solution

EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetato) is a hexadentate ligand and it forms stable chelate complex with given metal ions. The selective estimation of these ions can be done due to differensce in stability constants of complexes of these ions with EDTA.
