  • Question 1
    1 / -0

Which of the following hydrogen bonds is the strongest?

    Solution

Higher the electronegative difference between the two atoms, stronger will be the bond formed between them. Among the given compounds, electronegative difference between the hydrogen and fluorine is the maximum. Hence, the  hydrogen bond in HF is the strongest.

  • Question 2
    1 / -0

The decreasing values of bond angles from NH3 (106 °) to SbH3 (101 °) down group-15 of the periodic table is due to

    Solution

The bond angle decreases from tetrahedral angle of 109 °28′ to 107 ° in NH3 because lp – bp repulsion. On moving form NH3 to SbH3, the electronegativity of the central atom decreases, so, bp – bp repulsion decreases and hence bond angle decreases.

Decrease in bond angle is also caused due to increase in p-character of the hybrid (sp3) orbital. In SbH3 the bond angle decreases to almost 101 ° indicating that pure p-orbitals are involved in bonding.

  • Question 3
    1 / -0

The bond order in NO is 2.5 while that in NO+ is 3. Which of the following statements is true for these two species?

    Solution

Bond order of NO = 2.5
    Bond order of NO+ = 3
Higher the bond order shorter is the bond length

  • Question 4
    1 / -0

The correct order of bond angles (smallest first) in H2S, NH3, BF3 and SiH4 is

    Solution

    H2S → sp3 with 2 lone pairs
    NH3→ sp3 with 1 lone pair
BF3→ sp2 no lone pair, trigonal planar
    SiH4→ spno lone pair, tetrahedral

  • Question 5
    1 / -0

Among the following the maximum covalent character is shown by the compound

    Solution

Higher the positive oxidation state higher will be the covalent character.
    Hence, option C is correct.
