Which of the following is not an ore of aluminium?

    Solution

Bornite (Cu3FeS3) is not an ore of aluminium. It is an ore of copper.

Gravity separation process is used for the concentration of

    Solution

Gravity separation or levigation is used for the concentration of an ore when there is a great difference between densities of gangue and ore particles. Usually, this method is used for concentration of oxide ores.

    (a) Calamine - ZnCO3
    (b) Haematite - Fe2O3
    (c) Chalcopyrite - CuFeS2
    (d) Bauxite - Al2O3.2H2O

Bauxite is concentrated by Baeyer's process or Hall's process or Serpeck's process.

    Directions For Questions

The following question consists of two statements: Assertion and Reason. While answering the question, you are required to choose any one of the given responses.

    ...view full instructions

Assertion: CH4 has a tetrahedral geometry, but NH3 has a pyramidal geometry.
Reason: Nitrogen atom in ammonia molecule has one lone pair.

    Solution

The central atom in both CH4 and NH3 is sp3 hybridised but the geometry is different.
In CH4, all the hybridised orbitals contain bond pairs of electrons and the molecule has a regular tetrahedral geometry.
In NH3, nitrogen has a lone pair of electrons in one of the hybridised orbitals. Since the lone pair-bond pair repulsions are more than the bond pair-bond pair repulsions, the geometry of the molecule is distorted to pyramidal.

Hence, both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.

Which of the following roles is played by pine oil in the froth flotation method?

    Solution

Pine oil acts as a collector. It enhances non-wettability of the mineral particles.

Which of the following methods is used for concentration of sulphide ores?

    Solution

Sulphide ores are concentrated by the froth flotation method.
This method is for selectively separating hydrophobic materials from hydrophilic.
Here, the ore is hydrophobic, whereas the gangue is hydrophilic.

For concentration of which of the following metals is leaching method used?

    Solution

Leaching involves treatment of an ore with a suitable reagent so as to make it soluble, while impurities remain insoluble.

NaOH is added to this powdered alumina which reacts to form the following products.

    Al₂O₃ + 2NaOH + 3H₂O → 2Na[Al(OH)₄]

    2Na[Al(OH)₄] + CO₂ → Al₂O₃.xH₂O + 2NaHCO₃
    Al₂O₃.xH₂O → Al₂O₃ + H₂O

Which of the following reactions is used in rail track welding?

    Solution

In this reaction, aluminium acts as a reducing agent and produces metal from metal oxide, thereby helping to seal joints through welding by providing the required metal.

Which of the following statements is incorrect?

    Solution

Carbonate ores are converted into oxides through the process of calcination.
