    The half life period of radium is 1600 years. After how many years will (1/16)th part of radium remain integrated in the sample?

    Solution

    N = N0(1/2)n
    N = (N0/16) (given)
    (N0/16) = N0(1/2)n
    1/16 = (1/2)n
    n = 4
    Time of disintegration = 1600 x 4 = 6400 years

    Half-life for radioactive 14C is 5,760 years. In how many years will 200 mg of 14C reduce to 25 mg?

    Solution

    Half-life of 14C = 5,760 years
    Initial weight of 14C = 200 mg and final weight of 14C = 25 mg
    Quantity left after 5,760 years = 200/2 = 100 mg

    Similarly, quantity left after another 5,760 years (i.e. 11,520 years) = 100/2 = 50 mg
    Quantity left after yet another 5,760 years (i.e. 17,280 years) = 50/2 = 25 mg

    Thus, time taken by 200 mg of 14C to reduce to 25 mg = (5,760 + 5,760 + 5,760) years = 17,280 years
