It is not surprising that Delhi is poise on the brink of disaster. With two lakh people migrating to this metropolis every year, it is not difficult to see why the quality of life has deteriorated at such an alaming rate. The newspapers are full crimes committed because of the breakdown of basic facilities and the corrosion of human values.

This brings us to slums"-the alleged breeding grounds of most of Delhi's problems. Over the years, the number of slams and unauthorized settlements have leap-frogged. There is hardly any residential colony in this city that is not hemmed in by them. Yet they too serve purpose"-they provide cheap labour and captive vote banks. The very people who tum up their noses at the dirt, disease and fifth that festers in these areas, use these 'breeding grounds as pool for domestic servants that can be hired and fired at will and daily wage labourers who are grateful for any kind of employment. Isn't it about time we examined our own role and acknowledged our responsibility for the proliferation of these slums?

Antonyms and Synonyms There are three categories of antonyms as known by the characteristics relationship between the opposed meanings.

    • Gradable Antonyms: When we have words which have definitions that lie on a continuous spectrum of meaning. Temperature is such a continuous spectrum so hot and cold, two meanings on opposite ends of the spectrum, are gradable antonyms. Examples: heavy, light; fat, skinny; dark, light; young, old; early, late; empty, full; dull, interesting.

    • Complementary antonyms: When we have words whose meanings do not lie on a continuous spectrum and the words have no other lexical relationship. There is no continuous spectrum between push and pull but they are opposite in meaning and are therefore complementary antonyms. Examples: dead, alive; off, on; day, night; exit, entrance; exhale, inhale; occupied, vacant; identical, different.

  • Question 6

Fill in the blank with the appropriate form of the verb.

He saw that the clock __________.

    Solution

The action 'saw' happened in the past and is thus written in simple past tense. The second action 'stopping of the clock' was already complete when the first action (seeing) happened so the second action will be written in the Past Perfect Tense. Hence, the answer is 'had stopped'.

  • Question 7
    1 / -0

Select the most appropriate option to fill in the blank.

The deterioration in the quality of sleep is because of a _______ in routine.

    Solution

Let’s first learn the meaning of the words:

Change = an act or process through which something becomes different.

Substitution = the action of replacing someone or something with another person or thing.

Switch = change the position, direction, or focus of.

Conversion = the process of changing or causing something to change from one form to another.

The sleep cycle is interrupted when we change the routine time of our sleep. So, option A is the best fit for the blank.

Note: We don’t convert our routine. We only change it.

  • Question 8

Direction: In the sentence given below, one word has been omitted. Pick the option that has the missing word along with the words that come before and after it.

During the Industrial Revolution, the disposal of waste become more complicated as factories produced new types of wastes.

    Solution

In this question, we will use past perfect tense to find the omitted word in the sentence, because the sentence is in the past tense. Past perfect tense expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past. Examples: I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Andaman Island.

Let us look into the given options:

Option A) Waste had become - is the correct answer because it is the most appropriate answer. 'Had become' is the past perfect tense. So, this is the correct answer.

Option B) Waste has become - is an incorrect answer because 'has become' is in the perfect present tense. Present perfect tense usually refers to actions begun in the past and continuing until the present, or just finished. And our sentence is in the past form. So, we cannot use this option. Thus, this is an incorrect answer.

Option C) Waste had been - is an incorrect answer because 'had been' is the past perfect continuous tense and these tenses are constructed by using had been + the verb present participle (do + ing). However, we will not consider this as the correct answer, we need an answer to be in the past perfect tense. Thus, this is an incorrect answer.

Option D) Waste would have - is an incorrect answer because 'would have' would is past tense of will and we use would have in conditionals to talk about something that did not happen in the past. But the sentence seems to have happened in the past. However, this is an incorrect answer.

During the Industrial Revolution, the disposal of waste had become more complicated as factories produced new types of wastes.

Synchronized: adjust (a clock or watch) to show the same time as another.

Assessed: evaluate or estimate the nature, ability, or quality of.

Exchanged: give something and receive something of the same kind in return.

Restored: bring back or re-establish (a previous right, practice, or situation).

  • Question 10
    1 / -0

Choose the most appropriate option to identify the relative pronoun and its antecedent.

The tiger, which felt disturbed by the noise, gave out a loud roar.

    Solution

A relative pronoun functions as a pronoun as well as a conjunction. As a pronoun, it refers or relates to a noun that's common between two sentences, and as a conjunction it combines those sentences. The noun which the relative pronoun refers to, is called its 'antecedent'. Usually the subject is the antecedent. The pronoun should be as close to its antecedent as possible, following immediately after it. In the given sentence, the subject is "The tiger', a word is required to relate it to the rest of the sentence. Hence, "the tiger" is the antecedent. The most suitable pronoun from the given options is 'which', it refers to the tiger, 'which' is usually used for things and animals, hence option C is correct. Option A has the opposite answers, they're not correct because the tiger is not the relative pronoun, which 'follows' the antecedent, not vice versa, hence option A is incorrect. "The tiger" is an antecedent, "no antecedent" is the case where the statement is a general truth, and the antecedent is implied through that statement and can be omitted. For example, '(He) who works hard gets rewarded'. The given statement is not a general truth, making option B incorrect. "Gave out a loud roar" is an action carried out by the tiger, there's no object here, as it's not mentioned toward what or whom did the tiger roar. It's not the pronoun, hence option D is incorrect.
