    Directions For Questions

Prof. Vijya, the chairperson of the Faculty Academic Committee (FAC), was trying to understand the implications of decisions taken by the Student Placement Committee (SPC) on placement issues.

It was alleged that Biswajit, a final year student, inflated his grades in his bio-data that was sent to the recruiters. The President of SPC requested the FAC to debar Biswajit from the campus recruitment process. When the matter was brought up for discussion in FAC, one of the professors remarked that Biswajit too should be allowed to defend himself. When Biswajit arrived for the meeting, the situation became even more challenging.

Biswajit raised the issue that many other students who had misrepresented grades to get coveted jobs and had gone scot-free. He alleged that these students were close to the President of SPC and therefore, no action was taken against them. He stated that somebody has deliberately manipulated his grades in the bio-data. This allegation confused the members and it was decided to adjourn the meeting. Vijya has to decide on the next course of action.

It was found that a large section of the students have been indulging in such practices. Unfortunately, the HR manager of a much coveted campus recruiter, who is an alumnus of the college came to know about this. Considering yourself in the position of that HR manager, what would be your reaction?

    Solution

Option a is an extreme step. Hence, it is invalid

Option b: Contacting a known person in the college to find out the truth might not be a right step, because that person may or may not give the true picture about the ongoing issue.

Option c is invalid, as it suggests to not do anything and to continue with the status quo despite knowing the truth. As a responsible HR manager of a much coveted company, one cannot ignore any irregularities in the recruitment process.

Some students have inflated grades, but there may be some students who are well deserved for the placements. Hence, instead of taking any extreme step, as an alumnus you can verify the grades of the shortlisted students. In this regard, both options d and e are similar, but the difference is getting verified grades from college or SPC. Since, SPC might also be included in this irregularity, getting verified grades of the students from the college is a more valid step as colleges have better control on verifying grades. Moreover, you want the bio-data of all the students again and not just the shortlisted students.

As a potential entrant, you are having an informal Facebook chat with one of the college seniors. You wanted to know about the pay packages of the graduating students. The senior replied that one will be able to understand this only after joining the college. He did not reveal any information but suggested that it is not very difficult to get a high salary job as you have already started networking. He also cautioned that you should not believe any rumors and you should directly contact the student body for any further information. What will be your most appropriate choice for seeking further information about placements?

    Solution

Option a, c and e refer to either following the advice given on an informal chat by a senior or having more informal chats. More of this will not lead you to the answer you are looking for.

Option b is the most appropriate action as you will be contacting the relevant official college authorities to get more information on the placement process along with other details around it.

Vijya found that there were many such cases of grade inflation. She was giving final touches to the report when her attention was diverted by a phone call on her personal cell phone. It was from an unlisted number. The caller conveyed to her that it will be in her interest as well as in the interest of the college if the report is not presented to the Director. The caller also told her these findings will change nothing and only result in bad publicity for the college. The caller identified himself as a well-wisher of the college before hanging up. Consider yourself in Vijya's position, choose an appropriate decision from the following choices.

    Solution

Option a is not correct as it appears that there was someone trying to suppress the report and hence it might be worthwhile not to ignore the phone call.

Options b & c suggest that Vijya move away from her responsibilities when she is aware of the problem and hence not the correct step.

Option d is the best option. Vijya should continue with her report, tell the Director about the phone call and seek his opinion on how the situation should be handled as the Director probably takes the final call.

Option e is an extreme step and does not help solve anything. Moreover, since it was an internal matter, it is best solved internally.

  • Question 4
    4 / -1

You had saved money over the last ten years to be able to buy a plot of land on MG Road to build a house for your family in a year’s time. You had managed to buy this plot with your savings but recently you noticed that a local gangster has started working on an illegal construction on your vacant plot. He has refused your request to vacate and threatened you of dire consequences in case you do not sell the property at a cheap price to him. What would you do next

    Solution

Option a would mean you are giving up your land to the demands and threats of an anti-social element and is not in your best interests.

Option b is the best action in this scenario as they are better equipped to handle goons and such situations

Option c does not help in anyway as it is uncertain how your neighbours are going to help you in this scenario.

Option d will also mean giving into the demands of the goon. Negotiating with goons generally do not work as they are using threats to get the land at a cheap price. Moreover, you also do not want to sell the land as you want to use it for building a house.

Option e is extreme and it would mean you are using unlawful measures to solve a problem of yours and should not be taken

  • Question 5

You have taken up a project to create night-shelters for homeless people during the winter season. Within a week of establishing the shelters, you have received complaints from the residents of the area about the increase in theft cases with a demand to remove the shelters. What would be your immediate course of action?

    Solution

Option a is not the best solution as you are in the best position to solve the problem. Moreover, the homeless people are looking to you for reassurance and it might not be the best option to ask them to look for their problems to be solved elsewhere.

Option b is the correct action. As the residents are looking up to you to resolve the issue, assure them of an enquiry into the matter before an appropriate course of action is taken.

Options c & e are a little selfish and will be ignoring the complaints of the people by asking them to compromise.

Option d: ignoring is never the right option given there is a potential problem that has been raised.

  • Question 6
    4 / -1

Answer the question based on the letter below.

    To the Chairman:

    Dear Mr.Sailesh,

At the December 3, 2011 meeting, it was decided that no two officers would hold positions on the same committee. It has recently come to my attention that both Chaitanya Rao and Ajit Singh will be serving in some capacity on the Cultural Committee, and both have been nominated for officer status. As you know, this is in direct disregard for the rules as voted by the Members Council last December 3, 2011. I would hope that sufficient action be taken by the Disciplinary Committee (on which committee both of the above are members) so that this problem will be remedied.

    Sincerely,

    Arvind Singh

Which of the following is an essential flaw that the writer of the letter overlooked?

    Solution

Consider the following lines: "Chaitanya Rao and Ajit Singh and both have been nominated for officer status". They have not been confirmed as officers yet. Hence this is something the writer overlooked.

  • Question 7
    4 / -1

You are the officer-in-charge of a village administering distribution of vaccine in an isolated epidemic hit village, and you are left with only one vaccine. There is a requirement of that vaccine from the Gram Pradhan and also a poor villager. You are being pressurized by the Gram Pradhan to issue the vaccine to him. You would

    Solution

As the officer-in-charge, you job is to administer the vaccine to those most in need. You cannot be swayed by the position of the Gram Pradhan nor be sympathetic towards a poor villager.

Your job will be to provide it to the person who needs it the most at this point in time.

Option a: While initiating the process for the next order is fine, not giving the vaccine to either will mean doing nothing about a situation when two people are in need. Moreover if the last vaccine can help someone, it should be used for someone than remain unused.

Option b & d: This would mean you are arranging the vaccine for one from some other source by preferring to give the only vaccine you have to one of the two. You are also not aware if another area will be able to fulfil the need that you have for the person you have not chosen.

Option c is the correct answer as you would want to understand whose need is more urgent and take your decision post the doctor’s report.

Option e serves no purpose as your friends will have no idea about the two people in question or their relative urgency on the need of the vaccine.

  • Question 8
    4 / -1

You, as an administrative authority have been approached by the daughter-in-law of an influential person regarding harassment by her in-laws on account of insufficient dowry. Her parents are not able to approach you because of social pressures. What would be your immediate course of action?

    Solution

Option a is the first thing that needs to be done before anything else. Call in the in-laws for an explanation and hear their side of the story and if some resolution can be reached.

Option b: asking the lady to accommodate harassment in her life will be unjust and you will be ignoring the problem.

Option c: There is no reason why you need to wait until the parents approach you as the lady in trouble herself has approached you with her problems

Options d & e are extreme options which only aggravate the issue between the daughter-in-law and the in-laws. This step can always be adopted if step a does not work out or the situation does not get resolved without resorting to extreme steps. Moreover, if the lady has approached you first before going to the police or anyone else, it is best that you understand the situation completely before advising her of going to the police or the activists.

  • Question 9
    4 / -1

Narayan is Senior Manager at Orange Mobiles. He has been working on a large project whose deadline is in two days’ time. While going back home, Narayan meets with an accident and is hospitalized. He is unable to go to office and get the work completed. His Headquarters insists that he completes the task as it is a very important project. What should Narayan do now?

    Solution

The issues to be considered here are that a project needs to be completed in two days time and that Narayan’s accident has made it difficult for him to complete the task within the stipulated time.

Option a, although sounds reasonable from Narayan’s point of view, is not the correct step. Narayan is a responsible Senior Manager and knows that the project has to be delivered in two days time. Requesting a deadline will not serve the company’s objective of delivering in two days time.

Option b is an honest confession of Narayan’s inability to complete the work on time but it does not help the company in solving the issue.

Option c is the best answer among the ones given as it not only addresses his issue in not being able to deliver the project in time, it also provides an alternative to the Headquarters to get the work completed in time by handing over the project to someone else who can deliver.

Option d means Narayan is ignoring the problem and not doing anything when he is aware that the project has to be delivered in two days’ time.

Option e is too extreme a step. There are other ways to solve the problem

  • Question 10
    4 / -1

You, a recruitment manager, are interviewing Mayank, a hard-working young man, who has problem in speaking fluent English. He has studied in vernacular medium school and colleges. Amongst the following options, what would you choose to do, if your company has vacancies?

    Solution

Option a is an extreme step and can be eliminated easily.

Option b: The question does not suggest that Mayank is good at finance or production. Nor can one make the assumption that a person who is not good at communication is a good fit for finance and productions jobs. Hence option 2 is eliminated

Option c: Asking him to improve his communication skills and then to come back is not the best option, because he may or may not return later, in which case company will lose a hard-working employee.

Option d: A HR manager should largely focus on the strengths and not the areas in which one is weak at. Skills can always be improved through relevant training and hence rejecting a hard-working candidate on the basis of poor communication skills is not the best option.

Option e: Recruiting a candidate based on the skills he is good at and then providing training in other weak areas is the best option, because both Mayank and company will be benifited with this decision as Mayank will be given an opportunity for overall development and company can make use of his skills.
