CBSE Class 12 Second Board Exam Set for June; Under Government Consideration

The Government is considering scheduling a second Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exam for Class 12 students in June starting from 2026, as part of the plan to conduct board exams twice a year, recommended by the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE), according to The Indian Express.

Currently, Class 12 students take the CBSE board exam in February-March, with results declared in May. Students then have the option to improve their performance in one subject through “supplementary exams” in July. Those who have not cleared their exams can also take these “supplementary exams.” For example, this year’s Class 12 supplementary exams were held on July 15.

The new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to reduce the high-stakes nature of exams by proposing biannual board exams to give students more opportunities. In line with this, the Education Ministry has asked the CBSE to prepare a proposal for holding two board exams per year, starting from 2026.

One proposed option is for students to take a second set of exams in June. Unlike the current system, where students can only retake one subject for performance improvement, the new system would allow them to retake exams in any or all subjects. The CBSE would need about 15 days to conduct the exams and a month to declare the results, which would be announced in August.

The government is considering several factors, including the timing of the second board exams, the schedule for other entrance exams, and the evaluation load on teachers. Schools in snowbound areas mean the first set of board exams cannot start earlier than February. It is expected that not all students will opt to retake all subjects; most may choose two to three subjects, reducing the evaluation load for the second exam to about 4-5% of the first exam’s load. Initially, the CBSE may allow students to retake only “difficult” papers in June.

The National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, based on the NEP 2020, states that students will be allowed to take board exams “on at least two occasions during any given school year, with only the best score being retained.” While the goal is to offer board exams immediately after each school term eventually, this is not yet feasible for the CBSE.

Earlier this year, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that students would have the option to appear for Class 10 and 12 board exams twice a year from the 2025-26 academic session onwards. He also stated that this would be optional, aiming to reduce exam stress.
