Clarity and confusion: On the Bihar election preparations, the rival fronts

Both the National Demodcratic Alliance and the Mahagatbandhan are dealing with internal divisions (विभाजन)

The principal rival fronts in Bihar have finally announced incumbent (पदधारी व्यक्ति, वर्तमान अधिकारी) Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav as their respective chief ministerial candidates after weeks of speculation (अनुमान) and haggling (मोलभाव, सौदेबाज़ी). The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), around the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Janata Dal (United) axis, and the Mahagatbandhan, or Grand Alliance, around the Indian National Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) axis, are caught in their internal games of one-upmanship (the way of behaving in which a person attempts to get an advantage by appearing superior). The delay in the announcements by both fronts suggests (सुझाव देना) that their chief ministerial candidates are more a result of compulsions (बाध्यता, विवशता) than any convergence (अभिसरण, एकीकरण) of minds. The BJP had clearly indicated in recent weeks that the choice of Chief Minister would remain open (खुला, अनिर्णीत) before it made a turnaround (an unexpected change, reversal, rebound) to endorse (समर्थन करना) Mr. Kumar for yet another term (कार्यकाल, अवधि). The BJP is a bigger party in the outgoing Assembly (विधानसभा), though Mr. Kumar is the Chief Minister. The saffron party sees an opportunity now to claim the top post, given (दिया गया) the evident (स्पष्ट, प्रत्यक्ष) slowing down (धीमापन, गिरावट) of Mr. Kumar, who is 74. The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), another NDA constituent (घटक, सदस्य), is also hostile (angry, opposed, inimical, averse, aggressive) to Mr. Kumar. As it turned out (as it happened, transpired (often surprisingly or unexpectedly)), the BJP concluded that growing (increasing) public perception (public impression, persona, public face, character/reputation) that Mr. Kumar may get replaced, was damaging the NDA’s prospects (possibilities, potential, future / chances, expectations). Though he is aging and faltering (move unsteadily), Mr. Kumar continues to command (receive, get, be given, gain, obtain) enough of a following (support, backing, admirers/fans) in Bihar for the BJP to fall in line (comply, agree, obey, conform, and submit) behind him, at least until the election is over.

Something comparable has happened between the Congress and the RJD. The Congress was reluctant (unwilling, disinclined, unenthusiastic) to endorse Mr. Yadav initially, but then gauged (assess, determine, calculate, judge, and evaluate) that any further confusion on the leadership question could undermine (weaken, subvert, sabotage, damage) the alliance (coalition, bloc, union), which has other challenges too. While Mr. Yadav has the support of a notable (obvious, striking, glaring, marked, important/significant) and articulate (vocal, effective, expressive, outspoken, fluent, well-spoken) segment of the population, he is also resented (dislike, be angry about, be vexed/annoyed at, feel bitter about) with equal ferocity (aggression, severity, intensity, extremity) by the sections of the rest. By declaring Mr. Yadav as the chief ministerial candidate, the Grand Alliance is trying to first consolidate (unite, join, combine; strengthen, reinforce, fortify) its Yadav base (a group of people considered as supporting an organization/party) before seeking (try, aim, attempt) to expand it. The chief ministerial faces of the NDA and the Grand Alliance pull a lot of weight but also face a crisis of legitimacy (lawfulness, reasonableness, justification, validity) and public scepticism (doubt, disbelief, misbelief, distrust, mistrust, suspicion) for various reasons. Neither front is in a position to push for (press for, pressurize, demand) new possibilities (option, choice, alternative) in leadership and vision (plan, foresight, long-term plan/idea), and in such a situation, Bihar’s voters might consider other options if available. Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party is trying to place itself as a platform for those who are tired of Mr. Kumar and Mr. Yadav. It is still a long shot (unlikely chance / unlikely attempt; long odds) for Mr. Kishor, but the confusion and delay before the tentative (provisional, unconfirmed, unsettled, uncertain, experimental and conditional) clarity suggest that all is not well in the other two alliances.
