Fallout of policy failure: On the U.S. migrant tragedy
The U.S. must humanely (मानवीयता से, दयालुता से) manage the inflow (शाखा, अंतर्वाह) of migrants (प्रवासी, औपनिवेशिक) across its southern border
In what appears to be the worst episode (प्रकरण, उपकथा) in recent times of migrant deaths associated with (connect with, link with, relate to) dangerous border crossings (सीमा पारगमन) into the U.S., the bodies of at least 53 people were recovered from an abandoned tractor-trailer (a truck with a long trailer connected to the back of it) in San Antonio, Texas. Reports suggested that the migrants, hailing from (come from, be a native of, originate in, have one’s roots in) Mexico, the Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, died from the extreme temperatures inside the truck, amidst (के बीच, मध्यम में) a lethal (घातक, नाशकारी) heat wave (गर्मी की लहर, गर्माहट, आर्द्रता). The grim (विकट, परेशान करने वाला) episode highlights (प्रकाश डालना, ध्यान आकर्षित करना) yet again the perils (जोखिम, ख़तरा, कठिनाई) faced by those seeking (मांगना, इच्छा करना) asylum (protection provided by a foreign country to somebody who is unable or unwilling to return to their home country due to fear of persecution (harm, harassment or oppression)) or better economic prospects (संभावना, अपेक्षाएं, दृष्टिकोण) in the U.S., who come up against (के खिलाफ आया, अनुभव करना) the country’s immigration (अप्रवासन) policies, which are yet very much a work-in-progress (an uncompleted project). On the one hand (it is used to introduce the first of two contrasting different, points, facts, or ways of looking at something. It is always followed later by “on the other hand” or ‘on the other’), the latest crisis underscores (emphasize, draw attention on, underline) the serious lacunae (a gap/empty space; missing part of something) in border policy enforcement (imposition, implementation, carrying out). Despite the searing (extremely hot; scorching, blistering, flaming, blazing, burning) summer, border crossings in this region have remained stubbornly (persistently, firmly, inflexibly) high over the past two years. In May 2020, the U.S. Border Patrol (an agency within the US Department of Homeland Security that prevents people from entering the country illegally, or bringing anything harmful or illegal into the United States) encountered (run into, come across, come into contact with, face) 23,237 migrants, whereas (in contrast with the fact that) in May 2022, that number was 2,39,146 — said to be more than in any single month in the past three years. Even worse, Mexican officials have confirmed that the truck passed through a federal (relating to a system of government in which establishments such as states or provinces share power with a national government) immigration checkpoint (a location on an international border where travelers or goods are inspected and allowed passage through) within the territory of the U.S. and yet was not inspected. With approximately 20,000 trucks passing through the commercial corridor (a strip/swathe of land linking two areas (particularly by a road)) from Laredo to San Antonio every day, and even more across U.S.-Mexico crossing routes overall, there is a woeful (very bad, awful, hopeless, inadequate, poor) shortage (shortfall, deficiency, deficit) of manpower and surveillance (monitoring, observation, scrutiny, inspection) systems.
Nevertheless (in spite of that, anyway, nonetheless, even so), it is the bigger questions behind cross-border (across a border between two states/countries) migration into the U.S. and its fallout (adverse results/consequence; after-effects, repercussions), as shown above, that are troubling. Democrats ((in the US) a member or supporter of the Democratic Party; liberal) and Republicans ((in the US) a member or supporter of the Republican Party; conservative, right winger) have locked horns (quarrel, disagree, fight, contend) over comprehensive (all-inclusive, broad-based; all-embracing, complete, thorough) immigration reform in a multitude (a lot, a great/large number, a great quantity) of negotiations (discussion, talk, consultation, deliberation, debate) and across hundreds of bills (draft statute/law, proposed legislation, proposal (presented to parliament/congresscouncil for discussion)) proposed in Congress (legislative assembly, parliament; The United States Congress is the bicameral (two chambers) legislature of the federal government of the United States, and consists of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate). Yet there is a fundamental unwillingness (hesitation, disinclination, reluctance) to find bipartisan (involving cooperation between two (opposite & big) political parties) solutions for immigration policy, in the way that the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (The Bipartisan Safer Communities (BSC) Act of 2022 is a firearm regulation and mental health bill passed by the 117th Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden on June 25, 2022. It is a legislation to bolster public safety and prevent tragedies before they occur, including through substantial investments in mental health, school safety, and state-led crisis intervention programs. This legislation does not infringe upon second amendment rights of law-abiding Americans. This bill provides for increased mental health and security resources in schools, improves background checks, and strengthens protections for domestic violence victims) came out of a collaborative (collective, combined, common, joint) effort and now offers a glimmer ((a faint) sign, trace/ray, hint (of light/hope)) of hope towards containing (limit, restrict, control, restrain, curb) gun violence. While Democrats have dug in their heels on subjects such as a path to citizenship for law-abiding (lawful, righteous, honest) undocumented workers in the U.S. who meet certain conditions, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (it is an executive policy decision that was created during the Obama administration in June of 2012. The goal of DACA was to give some measure of protection to those who came to the U.S. as the children of immigrant parents. DACA was designed to defer deportation of these young undocumented immigrants and to give them authorization to work in the U.S), Republicans have tended (incline, lean, gravitate, be drawn) to focus more on keeping undocumented (not having the proper legal document) migrants out at the border. The problem with their refusing to hammer out (produce, bring about, forge, develop (a plan/agreement) after a lot of work) compromise (agreement, understanding, settlement) solutions is that the resultant (ensuing, consequent) failure to evolve (develop, progress, unfold gradually) a well-funded yet enlightened (refined, cultured, cultivated, sophisticated, advanced, developed, liberal, open-minded, broad-minded) immigration policy leads to (result in, cause, bring on) avoidable deaths of the kind seen in San Antonio. Whatever they cede (concede, relinquish, yield, give up) or do not cede politically to liberals, conservatives must realise that there is no resisting the “melting pot (a place with different people & their cultures combined together)” effect coterminous (happening at the same period of time; be present at the same period of time; coexistent, close, alongside) with the U.S.’s social and economic progress, and for that process to work smoothly, the U.S. must rationally (composedly, sensibly, neutrally, impartially) and humanely manage the inflow of migrants across its southern border.
