New order: on Wimbledon’s new champions

Carlos Alcaraz seems to have ushered in a new era in men’s tennis

One of sport’s eternal (everlasting, never-ending, enduring, abiding, permanent, immortal) qualities is its uncanny (अलौकिक, रहस्यमय) knack (technique, skill, expertise) of replenishing (refill, fill up, recharge, reload; stock up, restock, restore) itself. The old gives way to the new and the past yields place to the future. Men’s tennis though was resistant (प्रतिरोधी) to this, where every new dawn (rise, start beginning, advent, emergence, arrival) — like Dominic Thiem’s and Daniil Medvedev’s US Open victories in 2020 and 2021 — ended up (finish up, turn up, come/appear, find oneself (to a particular course of action in the end)) being a false hope. Wimbledon 2023 however made the sport feel young again as 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz dethroned (defeat, topple, overthrow, remove, oust, unseat, supplant) four-time defending (reigning; currently holding a title or championship) champion and record 23-time Major winner Novak Djokovic following a five-set thriller that lasted nearly (almost, close to, more or less) five hours. The youngest since a 17-year-old Boris Becker secured (हासिल करना, प्राप्त करना) the men’s crown at SW19 (the tag (nickname) of Wimbledon Championships; SW19 is the postcode district in South West London incorporating the areas of Wimbledon and other two places. Wimbledon is an area of urban south west London and SW19 is the geographic postcode for the All England Club) in 1985, Alcaraz, the reigning (defending, current; currently holding a title or championship) US Open champion and World No.1, is only the sixth multiple Grand Slam titlist in the last two decades (दशक, दस वर्ष की अवधि) after Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka. Just recently, the Spaniard (A native of Spain) had succumbed (be conquered by, be beaten by, be defeated by; yield, give in, give way, submit) to Djokovic — 16 years his senior — in the French Open semifinals owing to (के कारण) stress-induced (तनाव प्रेरित), full-body cramps (ऐंठन, मरोड़). On Sunday, after he lost the first set and was a set-point down in the second, Alcaraz’s odds (likelihood, probability, chances; advantage) nose-dived. The Serb (a native of Serbia) had lost just six of 329 completed best-of-five-set contests in which he had won the first set and just one of 272 in which he had won the opening two. But Alcaraz turned it around with a nerveless (confident, cool-headed, composed, relaxed, controlled) display (प्रदर्शन, दिखाव) of audacious (bold, courageous, valiant) shot-making to usher in (प्रवेश करना, आरंभ करना) the new order (a new succession (line of descent); a new system; a new pattern).

There was however one tradition in the men’s game that Alcaraz kept up. Ever since Federer won his first Major at Wimbledon 2003, prodigiously (enormously, greatly, massively, hugely, tremendously) talented players have toppled the established (popular) rather than (इसके बजाय) wait for a void (empty space, blank space, vacuum, vacancy, gap, lacuna) to slip into (get into, change into (a situation gradually)). Nadal did that to Federer with his triumph at Wimbledon 2008, and Djokovic to both Nadal and Federer, across surfaces, for a good part of the last decade. Alcaraz has embarked on a similar path, to first fell (गिराना) his predecessors (पूर्ववर्ती, पूर्वज) and carve out (create, establish, conceive (something for oneself through hard work)) a niche (ideal/suitable position, opportunity) for himself before supplanting (उखाड़ना, हटाना) them to become the next leader. The women’s game has not quite lent itself to such immaculate (clean, neat, spotless, perfect, flawless, excellent, pristine, pure, proper, impeccable, unblemished) succession (उत्तराधिकार) plans, and in Marketa Vondrousova it had another first-time Slam winner. The crafty (clever, shrewd, astute, sharp) 24-year-old from the Czech Republic was up against (confronted with or deal with a difficult opponent) the sentimental favourite in Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, who was gunning for her own maiden (first) Slam crown after two failed attempts last (continue, go on, carry on, keep on, be prolonged) year. But Vondrousova drew well from her experience of having played an equally talented but less flashy opponent in Ash Barty in the 2019 French Open final, to dismantle (fell, topple, demolish, destroy, knock down) Jabeur, the World No.6, and become the first unseeded (not ranked (in a sporting event or competition)) Wimbledon women’s singles champion in the Open Era ((in Tennis) the current era of professional tennis starting in 1968 when the Grand Slam tournaments agreed to allow professional players to compete alongside amateurs) (from 1968) and the sixth different in as many editions (version).
