Unrest unlimited: On the crisis in Bangladesh
Muhammad Yunus lacks (कमी) the legitimacy (वैधता) to steer Bangladesh through the latest crisis
The violent unrest (अशांति) that rocked (unnerve, shock, shake, stun, disconcert) Bangladesh on Thursday night, following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader of the July 2024 uprising (विद्रोह, जनआंदोलन) against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, was both a reflection (झलक, प्रतीक, परिलक्षण) of where the country stands (स्थित होना, खड़ा होना) today and a warning of what lies ahead. Hadi, an Islamist (इस्लामवादी, इस्लामी राजनीतिक विचार) and a virulent (घातक, तीव्र, कटु) critic (आलोचक) of India, played a key role in transforming the July uprising (Bangladesh’s student-led movement demanding reforms in the government’s controversial job quota system) into a broader movement (आंदोलन) aimed at remaking (पुनर्निर्माण करना) the country. He sought a decisive (निर्णयक) break from Bangladesh’s liberation-era values (मूल्य, सिद्धांत) and advocated (वकालत करना, समर्थन करना) greater political space for parties such as Jamaat-e-Islami, as well as for Islamist student groups. Hadi was shot by masked gunmen on December 12 and succumbed (die from, pass away as a result of, be a fatality of, fall victim to (a disease or injury)) to injuries on December 18 at a hospital in Singapore, triggering (cause, lead to, result in, produce, bring about, generate, give rise to) widespread protests across Bangladesh. Although the police have arrested at least half a dozen suspects (suspected person, accused) in connection with the attack, it remains unclear who orchestrated (initiate, organize, coordinate, mobilize, stage, engineer, mastermind, choreograph, influence) the killing. Some of Hadi’s supporters blamed the Awami League (one of the major political parties in Bangladesh. It is also one of the two most dominant parties in the country, along with its archrival Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)). On December 18, mobs (a large, disorganized, and often violent crowd of people) torched (set on fire, light, burn, ignite, set fire to) the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, two of the country’s largest dailies, trapping (confine, close in, hem in, hold captive) staff inside. Cultural centres, Awami League offices, the homes of former ministers, and even the residence of Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s liberation (freedom, independence) hero, were attacked. In Mymensingh city, a Hindu man aged 25 was lynched (punish/kill someone for claimed offence without legal trail by the group of people) over alleged (supposed, claimed, professed, reported, ostensible) blasphemy (the action or behaviour of someone which is not respectful of religious practice; irreligious, ungodly, unholy action/behaviour), as a crowd cheered and filmed while his hanging body was set on fire (set something on fire, cause to burn, ignite, set ablaze).
Fifteen months after Ms. Hasina was toppled (bring down, depose, unseat, overthrow, dethrone, oust), Bangladesh continues to reel under (to suffer (due to a burden)) mob rule. Ms. Hasina’s authoritarianism (dictatorship, autocracy, tyranny, totalitarianism, despotism) undoubtedly (obviously, unquestionably, certainly, beyond doubt) contributed to the eruption (sudden appearance/occurrence. outburst, outbreak, flare-up, epidemic) of public anger in July 2024. Her fall (defeat, downfall, decline, overthrow, failure) offered Bangladesh a chance to begin anew (again, afresh, once again, once more), grounded (base, establish, set) in reconciliation (restoration of friendly relations, restoration of harmony, agreement, compromise, understanding, peace, an end to hostilities; conciliation, pacification, appeasement), pluralism ((of people) the practice exists in harmony irrespective of various differences), and democracy (a system of government in which power is vested in the people, who rule either directly or through fairly & freely elected representatives). That opportunity has since been squandered (waste, misspend, misuse, throw away, dissipate, fritter away, run through, lose, lavish, spend recklessly/unwisely). The period following the uprising saw widespread violence against minorities and Awami League workers. The Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League, were banned, while the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami was lifted (remove, discontinue, cancel, withdraw, revoke). Muhammad Yunus failed to keep Islamist forces, who have a dark past, in check even as reactionary (rightist, right-wing, conservative, traditionalist) groups pressed (demand, push for, campaign for, advocate, urge, insist on, call for, work toward, lobby for, strive for, promote, make efforts for) for a total rupture (quarrel, rift, break-up, feud, division, separation, split) with the immediate past. The result has been near-anarchy. Anti-India sentiments (feeling, emotion, point of view), amplified (increase, intensify, heighten, add to) by Islamist forces, have further inflamed (intensify, exacerbate, fuel, exacerbate) tensions (strained relations, strain, unease; stress, pressure, friction, unease, anxiety, conflict). Bangladesh’s rulers must heed (pay attention to, take notice of, pay regard to, take into account, consider) these warning signs. The focus must shift from vendetta (prolonged feud/bitterness; revenge, vengeance) politics to rebuilding state capacity (the ability of government to effectively implement their policies and achieve their goals) and restoring law and order (a condition in which the existing rules, regulations, norms and related legal codes are recognized and observed for the sustenance of peace, orderliness and security of lives and property in society). Mr. Yunus appears to lack either the legitimacy or the resolve (determination, willpower, firmness, resolution, courage) to steer the country through this crisis. For Bangladesh, the only viable (reasonable, practical, logical, sensible, effective) path forward (plan, strategy, direction, way forward, course of action) lies in inclusive (all-embracing, all-inclusive, with everyone included, comprehensive) elections with the participation (engagement, contribution, taking part, involvement) of all the major political parties.
