Work in progress: On the road ahead for the Opposition in taking on the BJP
The Opposition parties are reduced to defending (रक्षा करना, सुरक्षित) themselves instead of attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party
The expulsion (निष्कासन, उन्मूलन) of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha, following a contestable (विवादास्पद) outcome (नतीजा, परिणाम) of a defamation (मानहानि) case against him in a Gujarat court, has become a new rallying point (something for which people are grouped together to help) for the Opposition, at least momentarily (briefly, temporarily, fleetingly, for a little while, for a moment, for an instant). All the technical arguments notwithstanding (despite, in spite of, regardless of), his disqualification is seen by most Opposition parties as a political move (कदम, अधिनियम) of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Regional parties continuously adjust their relationship with the two national parties, the BJP and the Congress. From the vantage points (point of view, view point, standpoint, position, thinking, frame of mind, perspective, angle) of many regional outfits (party, force, group), these two parties are not necessarily (अनिवार्य रूप से, निश्चित रूप से) two polar opposites (ध्रुवीय विपरीत). As a general rule, regional parties seek (try, aim, attempt) to expand their influence (प्रभाव, अधिकार) and power through fluctuating (उतरना चढ़ना) relations with the national parties, even when they are technically equidistant (समान दूरी पर) from both. The party in power in Delhi has considerable (विचारणीय, महत्वपूर्ण) leverage (फायदा उठाना), and regional parties are often vulnerable (defenceless, fragile, unprotected, ill-protected, unguarded; in jeopardy, at risk, endangered; risky, unreliable, insecure) to pressure. In recent years, central agencies (the central agencies are organizations in the executive branch that co-ordinate the activities of, and provide guidance to the operating ministries and agencies; e.g. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Income Tax Department (IT) and etc) (the Enforcement Directorate (Directorate of Enforcement is a specialized financial investigation agency under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. It was established in the year 1956 with its Headquarters at New Delhi. It is responsible for enforcement of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA) (Civil Law) and certain provisions under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) (Criminal Law)) and the Central Bureau of Investigation) have cornered (trap, catch, capture, enclose, surround) Opposition leaders, and gone either aggressive (attacking, hostile, combative, belligerent, confrontational) or passive (inactive, uninvolved, unresponsive) on cases according to the convenience of the BJP. While these facts were apparent (evident, obvious, visible, noticeable, pronounced, crystal clear; claimed, supposed, presumed, seeming), regional leaders have remained wary (careful, aware, heedful, attentive, circumspect) of confronting the BJP, and have often broken ranks with the rest. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), for instance (as an example), was not in alignment with the Congress-led strategy (plan of action (in order to achieve a more expansive set of political, economic, and security interests)) against the BJP on the Adani controversy.
The expulsion of Mr. Gandhi has prompted (cause, bring about, call forth, induce, give rise to, evoke) the TMC, the Aam Aadmi Party, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the Samajwadi Party, which are usually wary of the Congress, to condemn (censure, criticize, castigate, denounce, reprimand, rebuke, reprove) the action and call it out as dictatorial (oppressive, draconian, undemocratic, totalitarian). These parties possibly realise that mutual rivalries (competition, opposition, conflict, discord, friction, enmity) and fear of the BJP and the central agencies could drive (move, push, prompt, impel, propel) them to the margins (edge, verge, brink, borer) or, even worse, at the receiving end of more vindictiveness (vengefulness, revengefulness, vengeance, revenge, avengement). Fourteen of these parties have now approached the Supreme Court against the misuse (wrong/illegal use, wrong/illegal utilization, misemployment, misapplication, exploitation) of central agencies. The petitioners (a person who brings a legal case to a court of law; claimant, appellant, suppliant) say they represent (constitute, account for, form, compose, amount to) 42% of the electorate (all the people who entitled to vote in an election), and that 95% of the cases filed by the agencies have been against Opposition leaders. This is a move for self-preservation (the protection of oneself from harm/danger), and these parties are still far from (not, not at all; nowhere near, a long way from) having a joint view (opinion, point of view, viewpoint, standpoint, perspective) on several critical national issues. At the heart of (at the most important part of, at the centre of) the confrontation (clash, fight, conflict, tussle, skirmish) between the BJP and the Congress are questions regarding (concerning, as regards, with regard to, with reference to) the Adani Group of companies that stands accused of dubious (suspicious, questionable, doubtful) ownership patterns and business transactions. The BJP and the Centre have so far (until now, up to the present, up to this point) deflected (divert, avert, turn aside/away, sidetrack, distract) these questions. While Opposition parties such as the Biju Janata Dal in Odisha and the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party in Andhra Pradesh continue to stay aloof (detached, unresponsive, reserved, uncommunicative), it is noteworthy (worthy of mention, significant, important, noticeable, interesting) that other Opposition leaders have come out against (to express one’s opposition to someone/something publicly) the expulsion of Mr. Gandhi. Nevertheless (in spite of that, anyway, nonetheless, even so), a robust () opposition to the BJP is still a work in progress. It suits the BJP to keep the focus on Mr. Gandhi, and not on Mr. Adani.
