A long list: on the U.S., designation of The Resistance Front group

The designation (पदनाम, नामांकन) of TRF as a terrorist group should put more pressure on Pakistan

The decision of the U.S. to designate (नामित करना) The Resistance Front (TRF) group that claimed responsibility (ज़िम्मेदारी लेना) for the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) (विदेशी आतंकवादी संगठन) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist is a development (विकास, घटनाक्रम) that should undergird (समर्थन देना, मज़बूती देना) the global fight against terror. The Ministry of External Affairs has called it “a timely (समय पर, सामयिक) and important step”. For one, the U.S. State Department has acknowledged (स्वीकार करना, मान्यता देना) the severity (गंभीरता, कठोरता) of the Pahalgam attack. It also names the TRF as a “front and proxy (प्रतिनिधि, मुख्तार)” for the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which Pakistan claims (दावा करना) it has rendered (प्रदान करना) “defunct”. Even though the U.S. added groups such as the LeT and the Jaish-e-Mohammad to its FTO list in 2001, they have masterminded (initiate, organize, coordinate, mobilize, stage, engineer, orchestrate, choreograph) attacks in India since then. The U.S. has also partially made amends for the TRF’s name having been kept out of the UN Security Council (UNSC) (संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद) resolution (प्रस्ताव, संकल्प) condemning (निंदा करना, आलोचना करना) the Pahalgam attack, apparently (supposedly, seemingly, reportedly, allegedly, professedly, ostensibly, purportedly) at Pakistan’s behest, but with the concurrence (agreement, consensus, general opinion/view, common consent) of the U.S. and other P-5 members. It is hoped that the designation will now help India’s case in designating the TRF at the UNSC, under the 1267 Committee (It is a United Nations Security Council committee responsible for overseeing global sanctions on individuals and entities associated with Al-Qaida, ISIL (ISIS), and other terrorist groups) for sanctions (action taken, or an order given to force a country to obey international laws by limiting or stopping trade with that country, by not allowing economic aid for that country, etc), also strengthening the trans-national (involving/relating to two/more countries) legal pursuit (quest, search; activity) of those behind the attack.

While this is a positive step, it is necessary to put the Trump’s administration’s (government, regime) other actions since the Pahalgam attack into perspective. After India launched Operation Sindoor, the U.S. has countered (contradict, dispute, argue against, confront) India’s narrative (a representation of a particular situation; portrayal, account, description, statement) on the four-day conflict (war, warfare, armed conflict, military action, armed clash) on several occasions. Mr. Trump, as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have repeatedly made the claim (allegation, assertion, affirmation, contention) that the U.S. negotiated (discuss terms, hold talks, discuss a settlement, talk, try to reach a compromise) the India-Pakistan ceasefire (a negotiated agreement that will be accompanied by other associated commitments to de-escalate the fighting; a temporary stoppage of war, truce, armistice), and averted (prevent, stop, avoid) a nuclear conflict by using trade ties (association, relationship, bond, connection) as leverage (influence, power, authority, weight, sway, control, dominance) — an equivalence (equality, uniformity, sameness, levelness, evenness) which Pakistan has been happy to endorse (support, uphold, affirm, confirm). Mr. Trump’s unprecedented (not done or experienced before) White House lunch and praise for the Pakistan military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, came hours after the government had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had cleared the picture with Mr. Trump, and brings into question just how much pressure the U.S. is willing (ready, prepared, inclined, eager, keen) to put on Pakistan to act against terrorism. The Trump administration had held out the promise of doing more to support India in its fight against terrorism by fast-tracking (increase or step up the progress of something) the extradition (the action of surrendering/handing over a fugitive (a person who has escaped from being confined/accused of a crime) from one jurisdiction to another by mutual agreements between the two countries. Synonyms include deportation, handover, and expulsion), in April, of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who was wanted by India for the 2008 Mumbai attacks. It is hoped that the TRF’s listing (designation) means that the U.S. is recommitting (commit again) to that objective (target, intention, purpose, goal/aim). Given (considering, taking into account, bearing in mind) that the real challenge lies more in credibly (convincingly, believably, plausibly, probably, likely) ending Pakistan’s support to these groups, New Delhi must focus on its efforts, diplomatic (tactful, sensitive, subtle, delicate; consular, foreign-policy) as well as legal, to ensure justice for the victims and to prevent further terrorist acts.
