A productive visit: On India-China ties
India and China seem (प्रतीत होना, लगना) ready to put behind the memory of Galwan clashes (टकराव, संघर्ष)
Judging by the statements and readouts (an official statement summing up the main points of a meeting/phone call between two leaders) from both sides, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s two-day visit to India this week was extremely productive (उत्पादक, फलदायक). While Mr. Wang was in Delhi at the invitation of NSA (राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा सलाहकार) Ajit Doval for the 24th Special Representatives (विशेष प्रतिनिधि) talk (बातचीत, वार्ता) on the boundary question, he also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for bilateral (द्विपक्षीय) talks and the normalisation (सामान्यीकरण) process after the four-year military standoff (गतिरोध) at the Line of Actual Control (वास्तविक नियंत्रण रेखा). Mr. Wang was also received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who said that he would travel to Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) (शंघाई सहयोग संगठन) meeting. Mr. Modi will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In Delhi, India and China agreed to resume (फिर से शुरू करना) border trade at three points, restart direct flights, expand the Kailash Manasarovar yatra slots for pilgrims (तीर्थयात्री, भक्त) and relax (ease, make less strict, lighten) visas. While there were positive discussions on the lifting (end, cancel, remove, revoke, stop, withdraw, terminate) of export restrictions by China on fertilizers, rare earth products and boring machinery (equipment, apparatus), it is unclear whether there was headway (प्रगति, उन्नति) on China’s demand that India lift its scrutiny (examination, inspection, investigation) of Chinese FDI in Indian companies. The two sides agreed to expedite (speed up, hurry, quicken, accelerate, quicken) the process of boundary resolution (solution, plan, decision) of the 3,500 km India-China border. Significantly, the Modi government agreed to build on (expand on, enlarge on, develop) the 2005 agreement of Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for the Settlement of the India-China Boundary Question. Meanwhile, the Chinese Ambassador (representative, spokesperson, envoy, emissary, consul, agent, diplomat, ambassador) Xu Feihong said that China opposes the U.S.’s “bully (frighten, threaten, scare, browbeat, unnerve, terrify, overawe, intimidate)” move of imposing 50% tariffs (a tax imposed by one country on the goods and services imported from another country) on India.
The outcomes (end result, consequence, aftermath, effect, development) indicate that Delhi has decided it can now “move ahead” from the PLA transgressions (infringement, contravention, breach, violation, overstepping), Galwan clashes and the standoff (deadlock, stalemate, impasse (in a dispute/conflict)). While Mr. Doval said that the “borders have been quiet (silent)”, the government was made uncomfortably aware that even with a stable border, other long-standing (enduring, lasting, persistent, prevailing, perennial, long-term, permanent) problems will continue to shadow (overshadow, spoil, ruin, mar, dim) ties. Mr. Wang later left for Kabul to work with Pakistan and the Taliban on a plan to extend (develop, expand, broaden) the BRI and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (Economic corridors connect economic agents along a defined geography and region. They are integrated networks of infrastructure within a geographical area designed to stimulate economic development. They may be developed within a country or between countries) — India is opposed to both — into Afghanistan. He then flew to Islamabad for a strategic (relating to achieving long-term or overall goals) dialogue with his Pakistani counterparts (a person or thing that corresponds to or has the same function as another in a different place or situation; equivalent, match, peer). China’s diplomatic (tactful, sensitive, subtle, delicate; consular, foreign-policy) support to Pakistan after the Pahalgam attacks and during Operation Sindoor did not come up (emerge, surface, crop up, come about) during Mr. Wang’s visit, but provide an ominous (threatening, menacing, unfavourable, unpromising, gloomy) overhang to ties, as did Ambassador Xu’s contention (affirmation, assertion, claim, profession, declaration) that Pakistan too is a victim of terrorism. While the U.S.’s attack on Indian trade and economy may be spurring (encourage, urge, drive, impel, propel, induce) New Delhi’s efforts, the reset (re-setting; re-establishment, re-starting, re-commencing, reboot) with China must not come from a perceived (discernable, noticeable, recognizable; recognized, identified, distinguished, supposed, regarded, considered) position of weakness, and the next steps must be taken keeping in focus the strategic challenge.
