Bullying Anthropic: On AI firm Anthropic versus U.S. government

The U.S.’s demands for maximum flexibility (लचीलापन, अनुकूलन क्षमता) on AI use are dangerous

Over the last few days, the U.S. Department of Defence unceremoniously (बिना औपचारिकता के) cast out (निकाल देना, बहिष्कृत करना) the AI firm Anthropic, which develops the coding assistant Claude, and designated (नामित करना, घोषित करना) the firm a “supply chain (आपूर्ति श्रृंखला) risk”, the kind of cattle branding reserved for firms that are compromised (कमजोर करना, खतरे में डालना) by hostile (शत्रुतापूर्ण, विरोधी) foreign states. The reason was simple: Anthropic refused to relent on (झुक जाना, मान जाना) allowing its tools to be used for widespread domestic surveillance (निगरानी) and fully autonomous weaponry (स्वचालित, स्वायत्त हथियार प्रणाली). The high-octane (बहुत तीव्र, बहुत जोशीला) conflict with the U.S. government — which accused (आरोप लगाना) Anthropic of following a “woke” and “radical” agenda — is a shocking escalation (a rapid increase, typically in the intensity or seriousness of a conflict or situation; intensification, heightening, aggravation, amplification), despite prior concessions (an act of yielding or giving up something agreed upon in advance of a broader negotiation; advance compromise, preliminary yielding, preceding allowance, upfront agreement) that would allow the U.S.’s defence establishment’s (the comprehensive network of military forces, government defense departments, and affiliated industries within a nation; military-industrial complex, armed forces framework, defense sector, military network) use of Claude (a family of large language models developed by the AI startup Anthropic), which helps create and update code bases quickly. The conflict (संघर्ष, टकराव) also sends a chilling (horrifying, frightening; terrifying, alarming, disturbing) message — a great power can do anything, with or without safeguards, to attain (achieve, accomplish, obtain, acquire) a strategic (relating to the identification of long-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them; tactical, calculated, deliberate, crucial) upper hand. This is a dangerous message to send in (convey, transmit, communicate, project) a multipolar (characterized by the presence of several centers of power or influence in the global system; multi-centered, pluralistic, multi-nodal, diverse) world where shared (common, joint, collective, mutual) standards around safety are increasingly (progressively, more and more, continually, steadily) difficult to achieve.

This is no longer (not anymore, no more, previously but not now, never again) the world of the Bletchley Park AI safety summit (a major international diplomatic convention held in 2023 in the UK dedicated to addressing the global risks and regulatory needs surrounding artificial intelligence; global AI summit, UK AI conference,). It was a gathering (assembly, meeting, convention, conference) that acknowledged (admit, accept, recognize) the rapidly growing power of AI systems, and the shared global imperative (an essential or urgent thing; necessity, requirement, obligation, crucial need) to ensure that high-stakes (involving serious risks, critical consequences, or significant potential losses; critical, risky, perilous, high-risk) risks be mitigated (alleviate, reduce, diminish, lessen). What resonance (significance, relevance, impact, reverberation) does that worthy message have when the country on the frontier (the extreme limit of understanding or achievement in a particular area; boundary, edge, border, limits) of AI development so publicly disavows (deny, reject, repudiate, renounce) any form of safety control for war, at a time when a reckless (without thinking or caring about the consequences of an action; rash, careless, thoughtless, heedless) attack on Iran — with, reportedly (allegedly, supposedly, reputedly, apparently), some assistance from Claude — is grinding on? Firms need to show some backbone (to display courage, firmness of character, or unwavering resolve in a difficult situation, especially when resisting undue pressure, bullying, or outrageous demands; stand firm, show fortitude, demonstrate resolve, stand one’s ground) when dealing with outrageous (shockingly bad or excessive; shocking, disgraceful, scandalous) demands that could have chilling consequences (repercussions, outcomes, ramifications, results) in their home country and around the world. After all (ultimately, eventually, basically, nevertheless), if the U.S. demands the policy space (the institutional flexibility and sovereign scope a government retains to enact its own domestic economic and regulatory priorities; regulatory flexibility, administrative scope, maneuvering room) for domestic surveillance in such a full-throated (expressing something forcefully and fully, without any hesitation; vociferous, unreserved, forceful, loud) fashion, where does that leave countries where infiltrating (penetrate, invade, permeate, access) the political opposition with spyware on their phones is already the norm (standard, convention, rule, criterion)? Anthropic showed this backbone, and it deserved (merit, warrant, justify) the solidarity (unity or agreement of feeling or action, especially among individuals with a common interest; unity, harmony, cohesion, comradeship) of its peers (a person or entity of the same legal status, age, or ability as another; equal, counterpart, contemporary, equivalent). Sadly, that is not what happened, as ChatGPT maker OpenAI appeared to give the U.S. defence department the flexibility it sought just hours after Anthropic became persona non grata (a foreign person whose entering or remaining in a particular country is prohibited by that country’s government, used metaphorically for any outcast; unwelcome entity, outcast, unacceptable person). Despite OpenAI’s assurances (promise, pledge, guarantee, commitment) that its agreement provides key safeguards, AI safety has been harmed, with the other superpower and a host of middle powers around the world watching closely. Firms may not be the ideal characters to take a stand — taking into consideration, after all, their profit motivations — but as strong institutions are worn down around the world, there are few places to look to for leadership on safety. When a firm with billions of dollars at stake says ‘no’, it is not a promising sign of things to come when another steps in to say ‘maybe, yes’.
