Figure of speech: On the Prime Minister’s Independence Day address

The Prime Minister held out assurances (आश्वासन, भरोसा) even while feeding apprehension (आशंका, चिंता)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 12th consecutive (लगातार, क्रमागत) Independence Day address (भाषण, व्याख्यान) from the Red Fort was notable (उल्लेखनीय, महत्वपूर्ण) not only for highlighting (प्रमुखता देना, रेखांकित करना) national security and self-reliance (आत्मनिर्भरता) but also for laying stress on a communally coloured demographic (जनसांख्यिकीय) threat to the country. While showering praise (भरपूर प्रशंसा करना, सराहना करना) on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Mr. Modi repeated its refrain (complaint/comment/statement/phrase that is often repeated) by saying that the seeds of a new crisis were being sown (बोया हुआ, बीज डाला हुआ). The launch of a High-Powered Demography (जनसांख्यिकी) Mission (अभियान, लक्ष्य), to address (tackle, deal with, attend to, try to sort out) what he described as “a deliberate (जानबूझकर) conspiracy (साज़िश, षड्यंत्र)” to alter the demography of the country, is little more than a thinly (slightly, mildly, faintly, delicately, subtly) disguised effort to polarise (separate into two opposing groups) the country on religious lines (position, direction) by pointing to the different rates of growth in population among different communities and to the “infiltration (intrusion, encroachment, incursion, trespass, invasion, attack, entering, inroad)” of undocumented (not having the proper legal document) migrants (a person who moves from one region to another - either within a country or across national borders in order to find work or better living conditions) from the neighbouring (adjacent, adjoining, bordering, abutting) countries. However, the speech also dwelt on substantive (substantial, important, significant, considerable, major) issues with a considerable (substantial, sizeable, significant, large) focus on self-reliance in all fields (arena, domain, realm, sphere, territory, area; an area/field of activity) including the economy, defence and technology, and youth empowerment (The process of enabling young people to gain the knowledge, skills, confidence, and resources needed to take control of their lives, make responsible decisions, and actively participate in social, economic, and political development). Mr. Modi also presented an account (view, report, narration) of the developments in India’s national security and developmental (progress, progression, advancement, improvement, growth) landscape in the last year, and previewed (express an opinion on a forthcoming event) what to anticipate (expect, foresee, predict, look for, reckon on) ahead.

Mr. Modi lauded (praise, admire, welcome, salute, applaud, extol, hail) the armed forces (soldiers, troops, forces) for Operation Sindoor, which, he said, showcased the effectiveness of India’s defence capabilities and indigenous (native, domestic, local) weaponry (weapons of war, arms, firearms, guns, artillery, armaments). He also used the occasion to warn India’s adversaries (opponent, competitor, contender, challenger, contestant, enemy, foe, rival, nemesis), particularly Pakistan, underscoring (emphasise, highlight, underline, accentuate, point up, call attention to, focus attention on) the policy of zero tolerance (a complete refusal to accept certain behavior) toward terrorism and cross-border (across a border between two countries) attacks. Recent successes in the combat (armed conflict, conflict, fighting, battle) against the Maoist (a follower of Maoism (Maoism is a form of communism developed by Mao Tse Tung. It is a doctrine to capture State power through a combination of armed insurgency, mass mobilization and strategic alliances). The largest and the most violent Maoist formation in India is the Communist Party of India (Maoist)) insurgency also found a mention (reference, remark, comment). As in a plan announced by Mr. Modi, Mission Sudarshan Chakra (an indigenous air defence system developed by India by 2035 not just to neutralize enemy attacks, but also to hit back strongly), a fully indigenous defence system, will be developed and deployed (use, utilize, employ, make use of) by 2035. The details were scarce (insufficient, inadequate short, poor, scant, meagre), but he described it as “a powerful weapon system” which “will not only neutralise the enemy’s attack but will also hit back at the enemy many times more”. Speaking amid (in the middle of, surrounded by; during) rapid changes in global power equations (the situation (or) the problem, the quandary, the predicament), Mr. Modi’s Independence Day message was also aimed at the United States, which has announced tariffs (a tax imposed by one country on the goods and services imported from another country) as high as 50% on many Indian products. While promising to focus on revving up the domestic economy, Mr. Modi showed an awareness of the challenges that the Indian economy is facing. The next generation GST reforms would be rolled out by Deepavali 2025, which would reduce the tax burden (tax incidence/burden falls on the public) on core goods and services and boost business. On the one hand (it is used to introduce the first of two contrasting different, points, facts, or ways of looking at something. It is always followed later by “on the other hand” or ‘on the other’), Mr. Modi is trying to cultivate (improve, foster, nurture, encourage, promote, further, boost) his ideological (relating to a system of ideas (ideology)) ecosystem (complex situation/environment) while on the other, he is trying to tackle the material (major, significant, important, essential) challenges facing the nation. The success of one, however, can only come at the cost of (at the loss of something; with the sacrifice of something) the other.
