Generational shift: On the Nepal election, the results
Nepal’s voters upend (उलट देना, पूरी तरह बदल देना) old political order (पुरानी राजनीतिक व्यवस्था) as RSP faces governance test
In a country that has seen political instability (अस्थिरता) following every election since multiparty (बहुदलीय) democracy (लोकतंत्र) was restored in 1990, Nepali voters have finally delivered a decisive (निर्णायक) mandate (जनादेश)
and in favour of (के पक्ष में) a relatively (तुलनात्मक रूप से, अपेक्षाकृत) new party. In the March 5 elections, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) (a newly emerged, youth-driven political party in Nepal that recently secured a sweeping electoral mandate), founded barely (मुश्किल से) four years ago, won a commanding majority in the 165 directly elected seats to the House of Representatives (the lower house of the federal parliament in Nepal, comprising members elected directly and proportionally; lower house) and roughly (approximately, about, around, nearly) 50% of proportional votes (आनुपातिक मतदान प्रणाली), decimating (destroy, devastate, obliterate, ) parties that dominated Nepali politics for decades (दशक). The RSP is not the first to secure (obtain, acquire, gain, achieve) a decisive majority under the new Constitution of 2015. In the 2017 elections, the first elections held under the federal framework (संघीय ढांचा, संघीय शासन प्रणाली), the Left Alliance of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) led by K.P. Sharma Oli and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), helmed (steer, direct, guide, command) by Pushpa Kamal Dahal won close to a two-thirds majority. The two parties merged to form the Nepal Communist Party, but the union was voided (nullify, invalidate, annul, cancel) in 2021. What followed was the familiar rigmarole (a lengthy, complicated, and often frustratingly confusing procedure or series of political events; fuss, bother, complication, runaround) of shifting (परिवर्तन, बदलाव) alliances and a carousel (a continuous, dizzying succession or rotation of people or things, used metaphorically to describe frequent, unstable changes in political leadership; revolving door, rotation, succession, whirl) of Prime Ministers — Mr. Oli, Mr. Dahal, and the Nepali Congress’s Sher Bahadur Deuba — with none able to anchor (secure, stabilize, fasten, establish) a stable government.
It was this “dance (a metaphorical reference to a complex, strategic, and often repetitive series of political maneuvers by established leaders; maneuvering, interplay, machination) of the status quoists (a political figure or entity that strongly prefers to maintain the existing state of affairs and vigorously resists systemic reform or change; conservative, traditionalist, reactionary, conformist)” that provoked (instigate, trigger, incite, elicit) the 2025 youth-led Gen Z uprising (a massive nationwide political protest movement in Nepal driven by the younger generation, demanding strict accountability and an end to the corrupt old political order; youth revolt, student rebellion, generational protest, democratic uprising) against entrenched (firmly established over a long period and highly difficult or unlikely to change, particularly regarding corruption or political power; deeply rooted, ingrained, established, fixed) corruption and patronage (a system where political leaders use their power to control appointments, distribute jobs, or grant privileges to loyalists for political advantage; favoritism, nepotism, clientelism, backing) politics, eventually (finally, ultimately, at last, subsequently) leading to Mr. Oli’s resignation and a Sushila Karki-led caretaker (temporary, interim, provisional, acting) government. Ms. Karki creditably (commendably, admirably, praiseworthily, respectably) oversaw a largely (to a great extent; mostly, mainly, primarily, predominantly) peaceful election within a compressed (shortened, condensed, brief, reduced) timeframe. The results show that the Gen Z protests were no flash in the pan. Balendra Shah’s entry transformed the RSP’s fortunes (the overall success, trajectory, or failure of a person, political party, or enterprise over a given period of time; luck, destiny, fate). A former rapper (hip-hop artist, MC or emcee (master of ceremonies), musical artist, performer) who stormed into politics by winning the 2022 Kathmandu mayoral election as an independent, Mr. Shah joined the RSP in January and became its prime ministerial candidate. The 35-year-old politician defeated 74-year-old Mr. Oli by nearly 50,000 votes in his stronghold Jhapa. Mr. Shah was the choice of the Gen Z protesters when they demanded a generational (पीढ़ीगत) shift in political leadership and a decisive break (a significant interruption of continuity or a profound, decisive departure from an existing political tradition or alliance; separation, departure, split) from the Oli-Dahal-Deuba troika (a powerful group of three individuals working together; triumvirate, triad, trio, threesome). The scale (magnitude, extent, size, proportion) of the RSP’s victory, including a clean sweep (a highly comprehensive and overwhelming victory in an election, often winning all available seats in a region; landslide, complete victory, decisive win, conquest) of all 15 seats in the Kathmandu Valley (A low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it), is a powerful expression (manifestation, declaration, indication, demonstration) of a young electorate’s (the complete body of people in a country or designated geographic area who are legally entitled to vote in an election; voters, voting public, constituency) frustrations (the deep feeling of being thoroughly upset or annoyed as a result of enduring systemic failures, economic stagnation, or corruption; dissatisfaction, exasperation, annoyance, discontent). This is a verdict against incestuous (excessively close, insulated, and resistant to outside influence, specifically describing a corrupt, closed-circle political system that only benefits its own members; closed, insular, exclusionary, cliquish) patronage politics, endemic (pervasive, prevalent, entrenched, widespread) corruption, and the dire (terrible, awful, appalling, grim) economic conditions that have driven (force, compel, push, propel) Nepalis to work abroad. Whether the RSP, and Mr. Shah, can translate (convert, transform, alter, change) this sweeping (extensive, broad, comprehensive, wide-ranging) mandate into the institutional reform (systemic overhaul, structural change, administrative restructuring, organizational improvement) and economic revival (financial recovery, economic resurgence, fiscal restoration, economic turnaround) that Nepal desperately (urgently, critically, badly, seriously) needs remains to be seen. Considering (given, taking into account, bearing in mind, in view of) that Mr. Shah’s tenure (term, incumbency, administration, period in office) as mayor drew criticism for an anti-poor and technocratic (relating to a system strictly governed or deeply influenced by elite, highly skilled technical experts rather than traditional politicians; expert-led, specialist-driven, skill-based, professional) approach to urban governance, the mandate must be greeted with caution.
