Going downhill: On the Iran war, U.S. strategy

A ground invasion (जमीनी हमला, स्थल आक्रमण) of Iran will only make matters worse for the United States

President Donald Trump has made several self-contradictory (आत्म-विरोधाभासी) statements ever since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, making it increasingly (लगातार बढ़ते हुए) difficult to take anything that he says about the war seriously. In the early days, he insisted that the conflict (संघर्ष, टकराव) would end soon, but it has now entered its second month. On March 21, he threatened to strike (हमला करना, प्रहार करना) Iran’s power plants (बिजली संयंत्र) in 48 hours unless Tehran (the capital city of Iran, often used metonymically to refer to the Iranian government or its leadership; the Iranian regime, the Iranian administration) reopened the Strait of Hormuz (a strategically vital navigable waterway linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, serving as one of the world’s most critical chokepoints for global oil transit). The waterway (जलमार्ग) remains under Iranian control, and Mr. Trump has extended his deadline twice. Despite his repeated claims (दावा, कथन) that U.S. forces (सैन्य बल, सेना) destroyed Iran’s military capabilities (सैन्य क्षमता, सैन्य शक्ति), Tehran continues to attack U.S. bases (सैन्य अड्डा) in the Persian Gulf (an arm of the Arabian Sea located between the Arabian Peninsula and southwestern Iran, functioning as a highly significant geopolitical and economic maritime region for global energy exports) and Israel. Last week, U.S. media reported that an Iranian strike (a sudden military attack, especially by aircraft or missiles; bombing, assault, bombardment, air strike) at the Prince Sultan Air Base (वायु सेना अड्डा) in Saudi Arabia damaged an elite E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft (an airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft developed by Boeing to provide all-weather surveillance, command, control, and communications to military forces) and several KC-135 aerial refuelling tankers (a military aircraft developed by Boeing primarily tasked with transferring aviation fuel to other aircraft mid-flight, enhancing the range and endurance of strategic bombers and fighter jets). Mr. Trump now says that his administration (government, regime, executive, authority) is in talks with (engaged in formal discussions or negotiations with another party; negotiating with, conferring with, parleying with) Iran and a deal is possible. But Iran says that it has got a U.S. proposal to end the war and has made its counter-proposal (an alternative plan; counter-suggestion). The U.S. wants Iran to abandon its nuclear programme, limit (restrict, cap, control, curb) its missile (a weapon that is self-propelled or directed by remote control, carrying conventional or nuclear explosives; projectile) programme and reopen the Strait; Tehran demands war reparations (restitution, compensation, recompense, amends), guarantees against future attacks and an end to fighting on “all fronts”. Amid (in the middle of a particular situation or event; amidst, during, in the thick of, throughout) disputed claims about the talks (negotiation, dialogue, parley, consultation), the U.S. is also sending more combat troops (front-line soldiers, fighting forces, infantry, combatants) to West Asia in preparation for (gearing up for, making arrangements for, planning for, organizing for) a possible (potential, likely, probable, conceivable) ground attack (an offensive military operation carried out by land-based forces against enemy positions; ground offensive, infantry attack).

Mr. Trump appears to have no easy exit. The Strait of Hormuz was open before he launched the war. Ending the conflict now while the waterway remains under Iranian control would seem (appear, look, sound) like a defeat. The U.S. had a robust (strong, vigorous, sturdy, formidable, tough) military footprint (the size, extent, and impact of a country’s military presence or operations in a specific region; troop deployment, armed presence, strategic deployment, military posture) in the region. Today, most American bases in the Gulf have been battered (to strike repeatedly with hard blows; pound, pummel, bombard, thrash). In Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s assassination (targeted killing, murder, elimination, execution) voided (to declare a rule, agreement, or formal decree to be no longer valid or legally binding; annul, invalidate, nullify, revoke) his fatwa (a formal ruling or point of Islamic law given by a recognized religious authority or scholar; legal pronouncement, religious decree, Islamic edict) against the nuclear bomb, and its parliament is considering withdrawing (to remove troops or military forces from a specific area or battlefield; pull out, retreat, pull back, disengage) from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (an international landmark treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament). Crude (unrefined petroleum as it is extracted from the ground; crude oil, raw oil, unrefined oil, fossil fuel) prices, under $80 a barrel (a standard unit of measurement for crude oil and petroleum products, equivalent to 42 US gallons) before the war, are now hovering around $114 a barrel. Iran, which was under heavy sanctions (commercial and financial penalties applied by one or more countries against a targeted self-governing state, group, or individual; punitive measures, embargoes, penalties, economic restrictions), is making more money now because of the wartime (period of war, days of conflict, time of hostilities, conflict era) sanctions relief. This war is already a disaster for the U.S., and Mr. Trump would worsen (aggravate, exacerbate, compound, deteriorate) it by sending ground troops (infantryman, foot soldier, land combatant, ground forces). The U.S. has not mobilised (to organize and prepare troops and resources for active military service; deploy, rally, marshal, assemble) enough combat troops to launch a large-scale ground invasion (आक्रमण, हमला). Many argue that the U.S. could try to seize (capture, take control of, occupy, conquer) some islands in the Gulf for leverage (bargaining power, advantage, influence, strategic weight), but any attack would be extremely risky for both troops and the global economy. Mr. Trump’s escalatory (intensifying, aggravating, expanding, provocative) rhetoric (bombast, grandiloquence, posturing, extravagant language, hyperbole), including threats to strike Iran’s civilian infrastructure (the fundamental physical and organizational structures and facilities needed for the operation of a civilian society, such as power grids and water supplies; public amenities, civil facilities, essential services) only underscores (to emphasize; highlight, underline, accentuate, stress) his desperation (hopelessness, recklessness, distress, anguish). Instead of digging deeper into the hole he has put himself in, he must start looking for a way out (solution, exit strategy, escape route, resolution). A ground attack would close even the few remaining off-ramps (a figurative exit strategy or mechanism enabling parties to de-escalate or withdraw from a conflict or crisis without losing face; way out, exit strategy, escape route, withdrawal mechanism) he has.
