House of wars: On Parliament, Operation Sindoor discussion

Attacking political rivals (प्रतिद्वंदी, प्रतियोगी) cannot be a way to evade (टालना, बचना) responsibility

The government and the Opposition crossed swords in Parliament during a discussion on Operation Sindoor this week. There was unanimity (सर्वसम्मति) in praising India’s armed forces (सशस्त्र बल), but there was little common ground beyond that. Operation Sindoor was India’s military response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, on April 22, 2025, which claimed (दावा करना, अधिकार जताना) 26 lives. The elimination (killing, putting to death) of three terrorists behind the attack, just before the parliamentary debate, helped the government’s case (मामला, दलील). It told Parliament that these terrorists were Lashkar-e-Taiba members from Pakistan. The Narendra Modi government’s strident (तीखा, कठोर) approach seeks to change the behaviour of Pakistan and reassure its domestic audience (दर्शक, श्रोता). The success of this approach is debatable and the Opposition sought to put the government on the spot on both counts (a point for discussion; a point for consideration). A demonstrated willingness (इच्छा, तत्परता) to use force against Pakistan in the event of (ऐसी स्थिति में) a terrorism incident (घटना, प्रसंग) is a definitive (निर्णायक, स्पष्ट) turn (मोड़, बदलाव) in India’s strategy (रणनीति), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) takes pride in (गर्व करना) that. But there is no evidence yet that it is working though there has been chest thumping (boastfulness, self-assertion, self-satisfaction, excessive pride, extreme self-confidence, chutzpah, triumphalism, chest-beating; an attitude or a belief that a particular doctrine, religion, culture, social system is superior to and should triumph all over others) around it by the ruling party. The discussion in Parliament barely (hardly, scarcely, almost not) addressed the implications (consequence/outcome, ramification, repercussion) of this approach, which is being touted (endorse, praise, publicize, support, recommend, commend, proclaim, promote, speak of, urge) as the new normal. The Opposition and the government agreed on the need to punish Pakistan, and also disagreed on who would do it better.

The government claimed success in meeting its objectives (target, intention, purpose, goal/aim) of launching a military operation and denied that it had acted under pressure in ending the war. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi demanded a pointed (sharp, direct, clear, precise, unambiguous (and often critical, clearly expressing disagreement or disapproval)) response to repeated claims (assertion, affirmation, avowal, contention, allegation, declaration) by U.S. President Donald Trump that he mediated (negotiate, conciliate, moderate, arbitrate, make peace; discuss terms, hold talks, discuss a settlement, talk, try to reach a compromise) the ceasefire (a negotiated agreement that will be accompanied by other associated commitments to de-escalate the fighting; a temporary stoppage of war, truce, armistice) but the Prime Minister evaded a direct response on it. The government contradicts (say the opposite of, disagree (with), resist, question, controvert, gainsay, challenge, oppose, dispute, rebut, refute) itself when it says that the operation was a success, and that it is continuing. It is also exasperating (annoy, irritate, disturb, vex, infuriate, madden, anger) to hear a party that is now in its eleventh year of uninterrupted (continuous, steady, untroubled) power, blame people who passed away decades (a period of ten years) ago for any challenge that India faces now. There was little self-reflection (serious thinking about one’s own feelings/actions) regarding (in respect of, concerning, with regard to, with reference to, in connection with) the lapses (failure, mistake, blunder, oversight) that led to the terrorism incident, and whether and how the government plans to address them. The government had sent joint teams including several MPs from the Opposition abroad to garner (gather, collect) support for India in the aftermath of (as a consequence of, as a result of, in the wake of, following (an unpleasant event)) the operation, but that sign (demonstration; gesture or action) of statesmanship (statecraft, negotiations/discussions; the skilful management of a country’s public affairs) was a short-lived (temporary, short-term, transient, momentary, passing, unstable, impermanent, fleeting, brief) aberration, as it turns out (as it happens). The world is changing rapidly and India’s capacity (power, ability, competence, potentiality) to navigate (travel, proceed (especially carefully or with difficulty)) those changes will be largely (mostly, mainly, generally) determined by its own character (nature, identity, status, image, reputation). Questioning the patriotism (devoted love and support for country; nationalism, national loyalty) of political opponents is an easy route to take to (start/begin to doing something often; resort to, turn to, have recourse to, make a habit of) evade tough questions, but the BJP must realise that such an approach has diminishing (decreasing, declining, reducing, shrinking, eroding, lessening) returns (yield, gain, dividend, interest).
