Making a point: On the election of the Vice-President

The election of the Vice-President is an opportunity for parties to score points

The BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led Opposition parties have announced their respective candidates for the post of the Vice-President of India, which fell vacant after the abrupt (आकस्मिक, अचानक) and intriguing (रोचक, जिज्ञासापूर्ण) resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, 2025, setting the stage for a fresh face-off (आमना-सामना, टकराव). The numbers are foretold and there is no surprise in store (होने की संभावना) about the outcome (परिणाम, नतीजा). However, this is a significant ideological (वैचारिक, विचारधारा-संबंधी) battle, and both sides see it as such (in a true or literal sense). The NDA’s candidate, C.P. Radhakrishnan, is a veteran (अनुभवी व्यक्ति, वरिष्ठ) RSS activist (कार्यकर्ता, आंदोलनकारी) from Tamil Nadu, who has served (सेवा करना, कार्य करना) as a two-term Member of Parliament, from 1998 to 2004. He is the Governor of Maharashtra. The INDIA bloc parties have chosen B. Sudershan Reddy, a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India, born and raised in undivided Andhra Pradesh. The NDA has a majority and is on a drive (अभियान, प्रयास) to canvas (solicit/ask for/request/seek votes) additional unattached (असंबद्ध, स्वतंत्र) individual voters and parties such as the BJD and the BRS. The YSRCP, bitterly (कटुता से, तीव्रता से) opposed to the TDP, the NDA’s partner, in Andhra Pradesh, has pledged (वचन देना, शपथ लेना) its support to Mr. Radhakrishnan. Justice Reddy’s candidacy (प्रत्याशिता, उम्मीदवार होने की स्थिति) has set off (cause, bring about, begin/start, give rise to, trigger off) some regionalist (relating to a political notion (idea) which favours regionalization) political posturing (position, approach, behavior, attitude, disposition, pose) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, while Mr. Radhakrishnan’s has caused the same in Tamil Nadu. On this count (with regard to this particular point), the INDIA bloc managed to push back (resist, oppose, refute, reject (a proposal)) the NDA’s attempt to put the DMK on the defensive (to protect yourself from possible criticism/attack by others) ahead of the State Assembly election. The BJP hopes that Mr. Radhakrishnan’s elevation (promotion, rise) will gain it some mileage (benefit, advantage, gain) in the Assembly election.

The political messaging cannot be clearer. By offering the second-highest office in the country (a point for discussion; a point for consideration) to a life-long (long-term) adherent (believer, brethren, follower, loyal follower, faithful) of Hindutva, the BJP has fastened (secure, anchor, attach, connect firmly) its ties (association, relationship, bond, connection) with its mother ship (base, source, origin, place of origin), the RSS. Mr. Radhakrishnan’s profile (a description/outline/account of a person) is in stark contrast with Mr. Dhankhar, who was a late entrant (new member, newcomer) into the Sangh Parivar and failed to fit in (to be compatible, suitable, or belong in a particular group). The BJP has used state power (the authority and ability of a state (a political entity, like a government) to govern, enforce laws, and exercise control over its territory, people, and resources), which it controls, in a systematic (methodical, organized, structured) and effective manner to advance (promote, facilitate, improve, support, strengthen) Hindutva. Numerous personality (persona, identity, character) clashes notwithstanding (nonetheless, nevertheless, however, even so, in spite of that), these shared (collective, combined, collaborative, joint, mutual, communal, cooperative) convictions hold (have, own, posses) the Sangh Parivar together. Not only has the BJP managed to hold its existing partners firmly behind its candidate but it has also managed to win over (persuade, convince, satisfy, bring, get, prevail (on or upon), talk (into), induce) the YSRCP. As for (with regard to., with respect to, with reference to, regarding, with regard to) the Congress and the Opposition, Justice Reddy’s candidacy is an assertion (statement, declaration, opinion, affirmation, pronouncement; upholding, insistence) of its resistance (opposition, confrontation, defiance, fight; refusal to accept, reluctance to accept; ability to fight back) to the Parivar and an attempt to amplify (increase, intensify, heighten, add to) their social justice (the equal access to wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society) slogan (mantra, motto, tagline, catchphrase, rallying cry, watchword). Justice Reddy recently headed (lead, control, manage, be in charge of) the 11-member independent expert working group that had analysed and interpreted (explain, elucidate, clarify, simplify, shed light on, make clear) the data collected during the Telangana Congress government’s Socio, Economic, Education, Employment, Political and Caste (SEEEPC) Survey 2024. They also hope to use this contest as a rallying cry (a slogan (word/phrase) that is used to make people come together and to act in support of a particular idea/cause; war cry) for the Opposition to consolidate (unite, join, combine; strengthen, reinforce, fortify) against the BJP.
