Hindi English Translation || Editorial || Party on the move: On the Aam Aadmi Party, its leader

Party on the move: On the Aam Aadmi Party, its leader

AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal continues to surprise, also outlining (रूपरेखा तैयार करना, संक्षेप में बताना) his political ambitions

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continues to intrigue (आकर्षित करना) its supporters and opponents (प्रतिद्वंद्वी, विरोधी) alike (समान रूप से), but one aspect that has now become predictable about its leader Arvind Kejriwal is his infinite capacity to create a spectacle (तमाशा). In the latest development, Mr. Kejriwal has resigned from the post of Delhi Chief Minister, choosing AAP Minister Atishi as his replacement. Ms. Atishi has been handling a heavy basket (समूह) of portfolios (the area of responsibility (department) assigned to a Minister) during Mr. Kejriwal’s long imprisonment (कारावास, कैद, हिरासत) on corruption charges (आरोप, अभियोग). Mr. Kejriwal remained the Chief Minister during his incarceration (कारावास), setting a new precedent (मिसाल) and reinforcing (सुदृढ़ करना, मजबूत बनाना) his aura of defiance (अवज्ञा, विरोध), but resigned after securing (प्राप्त करना, हासिल करना) bail (जमानत) from the Supreme Court. Mr. Kejriwal had been cornered by central agencies (केंद्रीय एजेंसियां) on the grounds (reason, cause, basis, factor) of investigating corruption — conduct (behaviour, activity, deed) that the Court has frowned upon. With his sudden move, and at a time of his choosing, Mr. Kejriwal is now trying to reset (readjust) the course (plan (of action), approach, programme, strategy, way) of politics in Delhi and beyond, and turn the tables (turning a position of disadvantage into one of advantage) on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In Delhi, the BJP has swept the last three Lok Sabha elections while AAP has won nearly (almost, practically, virtually) all seats in two Assembly elections, indicating an overlapping (crisscrossing, intersecting; superimposed, underlying) political base (a group of people considered as supporting an organization/party) that swings (change, fluctuate, oscillate, vary, shift, alter) between the two parties. AAP has metamorphosed (transform, change, transfigure, convert, alter, modify, remodel, reorganize, translate) into a political party from being an anti-corruption campaign (an organized effort that seeks to influence the decision-making progress within a specific group), and the BJP hopes to slow it down in the election, on grounds of its involvement in a serious corruption case.

Mr. Kejriwal’s claim (assertion, statement, affirmation) to be incorruptible (unbribable, honest, trustworthy, high-principled) is what has helped his dramatic rise in politics, but he also realises that votes are influenced (affect, have an influence on, win over, persuade, convince, tempt, lure) more by delivery of affordable (inexpensive, cost-effective, reasonable) or free services. The BJP’s strategy (plan of action (in order to achieve a more expansive set of political, economic, and security interests)) for Delhi involves undermining (weaken, subvert, sabotage, damage) AAP’s anti-corruption claims, and restricting its government’s capacity to deliver the slew (a large number of, lot, range) of welfare (a government program that provides (financial) assistance to individuals and families in need; social security, government/state benefit, public assistance) schemes that it runs. Mr. Kejriwal’s bail conditions limit his powers, and a fully empowered (authorized, allowed, entitled) Chief Minister could mobilise ((of people) bring together for a particular cause) a welfare crescendo (peak, pinnacle, height, highest point, top) ahead of the election, due (expected, anticipated, awaited, scheduled for) in February. AAP also wants to advance (bring forward, put forward, move forward, make earlier; draw nearer, move nearer) the election and club (combine, join up) it with the Maharashtra poll in November. As a stand-alone election, the BJP can give its undivided (full, complete, total, entire, whole, solid, thorough, undistracted, focused) attention (recognition, concentration, regard, attentiveness, support) to Delhi, a situation that AAP wants to avoid. Ms. Atishi, Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister, has her own standing (status, position, level) as an administrator, but has chosen to play second fiddle (be a subordinate/assistant/deputy to someone/something or to be a less important one (than someone/something)) to her leader, by declaring that she would be just a place-holder until the party wins and Mr. Kejriwal returns. Mr. Kejriwal, meanwhile, has bigger plans to play a national role and climb up (rise, arise, go up, soar, ascend (in rank or status)) as the leader in what is now a crowded Opposition camp.
