Reckless wreckers: On threats to nuclear facilites
Damaging nuclear facilities under an unstable regime (शासन-व्यवस्था, शासन तंत्र) poses great risks
Nuclear (परमाणु संबंधी) facilities have faced (सामना करना) unprecedented (अभूतपूर्व) threats of late (हाल ही में, हाल के समय में). Since its capture (कब्जा करना, पकड़ लेना) by Russian forces in 2022, Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has faced repeated shelling (गोलाबारी, तोपों से हमला) and drone strikes (सैन्य हमला, लक्षित हमला). While Russia wished to be the sole nuclear-armed successor (उत्तराधिकारी) to the Soviet Union, Israel has viewed Iran’s nuclear programme (the state-led technological initiative by Iran to develop nuclear energy and enrichment capabilities; atomic project, enrichment initiative) as an existential threat (a danger that poses a risk to the very survival or continued existence of a nation or people; ultimate risk, survival threat, grave peril) and has attacked its weapons sites since 2024. In 2025, the U.S. launched targeted strikes against Fordow and Natanz, which enrich uranium (a heavy, radioactive metallic element used as the primary fuel in nuclear reactors and weapons; fissile material, atomic fuel, radioactive element), and Isfahan, a fuel cycle complex (परमाणु ईंधन चक्र परिसर). U.S. President Donald Trump claimed (दावा) they were “obliterated (पूरी तरह नष्ट कर देना, मिटा देना)” but the IAEA (the global intergovernmental organization for nuclear oversight; nuclear watchdog, international regulator) found that the enriched uranium stockpile (a large accumulated supply of materials or weapons held in reserve for future use; reserve, store, hoard, inventory) was largely (to a great extent; predominantly, chiefly, mainly, principally) intact at Isfahan. On March 2, the IAEA had said that the Bushehr and Tehran reactors (a device or structure in which a nuclear chain reaction is controlled for power generation; nuclear core, atomic pile, fission chamber) had not been hit (strike, impact, target, attack, assault) or damaged until then (hitherto, previously, heretofore, formerly), although strikes on March 3 surfaced (emerge, arise, materialize, appear) reports of damage to the Bushehr airport (according to Iran’s state media) and again in Natanz. The broader (extensive, comprehensive, wide-ranging, expansive) pattern of attacking nuclear facilities is worrisome. Aside from (in addition to or apart from something else; besides, excluding, bar, except) overt attempts, at least one hacking attempt (an unauthorized effort to gain access to a computer system or network; cyberattack, digital intrusion, security breach, network infiltration) has breached the National Nuclear Security Administration, which manages the U.S.’s nuclear stockpile, while ransomware (malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid; malware, cyber extortion, digital hijack, malicious code) groups have targeted global energy firms and Brazil’s state nuclear operator (the government-controlled entity responsible for the management of a nation’s nuclear plants; national utility, atomic authority). The Geneva Conventions (international treaties establishing legal standards for humanitarian treatment in war; international humanitarian law, laws of war, war protocols, diplomatic treaties) prohibit states from endangering (jeopardize, imperil, hazard, threaten) nuclear facilities if they release “dangerous forces” but neither the U.S. nor Israel seems mindful of (being conscious or aware of the importance or consequences of something; cognizant, aware, conscious, heedful) the risks. Iran has also accused the IAEA of spying for Israel.
Physically destroying a facility (a specialized building, complex, or site established for a specific industrial, military, or scientific purpose; establishment, installation, station, complex) only removes one layer of risk; the humanitarian (concerned with or seeking to promote human welfare and the alleviation of suffering; philanthropic, compassionate, benevolent) and environmental effects are often intractable (hard to control, manage, or solve; persistent and complex; stubborn, unmanageable, obstinate, complex). A damaged reactor core or spent fuel pool (water-filled storage basins used to cool and shield spent nuclear fuel rods; spent fuel pond, cooling pool, radioactive storage, reactor basin) could release caesium-137 (a radioactive isotope of caesium that is a common fission product and hazardous if released; Cs-137, radioactive contaminant, fission byproduct, toxic isotope), a long-lived (existing or remaining active for a long period, specifically regarding radioactive half-life; enduring, persistent, lasting, perennial) isotope that causes acute radiation sickness (an illness caused by exposure to a high dose of penetrating radiation over a short period; radiation poisoning, ARS, radiation syndrome, ionizing sickness) and contaminates (pollute, taint, adulterate, infect) land for decades. Radioactive particles (subatomic particles or atoms that emit ionizing radiation as they decay; radioactive dust, ionizing matter, nuclear emissions) can be carried by winds, affecting global food security (the reliable availability of and access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food; food stability, nutritional security, agricultural certainty, sustenance access). Damaging nuclear facilities overseen (supervise, manage, monitor, administer) by an unstable regime also risks loss of custody (the protective care or guardianship of someone or something in a legal or security context; guardianship, care, protection, charge) of enriched uranium. Such strikes do not achieve a strategic (relating to the identification of long-term aims and the means of achieving them; tactical, calculated, deliberate, planned) resolution and could in fact accelerate (expedite, hasten, quicken, precipitate) Iran’s resolve (a firm determination to achieve a goal or adhere to a course of action; determination, firmness, tenacity, willpower), marked by its shift of assets to deeper, more clandestine (kept secret or done secretively, especially because it is unauthorized or illicit; surreptitious, covert, furtive, stealthy) facilities. Military force also destroyed the diplomatic (relating to the profession or skill of managing international relations; ambassadorial, consular, political, tactful) and verification frameworks (structure, blueprint, skeleton, schema) required for long-term safety, leaving negotiations as the safest way to restore stability in the region. Iran is already facing 60% inflation (a general increase in prices and the subsequent fall in the purchasing value of money; price rise, devaluation, economic swelling, cost escalation) and the U.S. can trade (swap, exchange, substitute, replace) sanctions relief for IAEA monitoring. Iran has also finalised long-term deals with Russia and China, in return securing air defences and navigation systems to negate (nullify, invalidate, void, counteract) western advantages, and bringing Tehran back to the table could also reduce its dependence on these burgeoning (beginning to grow or increase rapidly; flourishing, blossoming, mushrooming, prospering) partnerships. Conversely (contrarily, inversely, oppositely, on the other hand), military action risks refugee exodus (a mass departure of people, especially from a conflict zone; flight, migration, withdrawal, evacuation) from a population of 93 million, asymmetric (involving participants of vastly different capabilities or strengths, especially in warfare; disproportionate, uneven, lopsided, unbalanced) retaliation against the U.S.’s Gulf bases (military installations located in the Persian Gulf region; regional outposts, strategic facilities, military hubs, forward bases), and the inalienable (absolute, sacrosanct, inherent, nontransferable) threat of nuclear disaster.
