Synthetic media: On labelling of AI-generated content
The requirement of labelling AI-generated imagery is a good start
Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated deepfakes, or synthetically (artificially, falsely, unnaturally, counterfeitly, inauthentically) generated images and videos, have been proliferating (तेजी से बढ़ना, फैलना) on social media ever since generative AI (AI technology that creates new content such as text, images, or videos based on prompts or data patterns) made photorealistic (extremely realistic in appearance; resembling a real photograph) content as easy as typing a description of a given scene. As this technology developed rapidly over 2024, concerns (चिंता, फिक्र) were raised over electoral integrity (चुनावी अखंडता) and disinformation (भ्रामक सूचना) amplified (बढ़ाना, विस्तार करना) with the aid (सहायता, मदद) of such AI-generated content. While those concerns did not reach the peaks of the feared outcomes (परिणाम, नतीजा), AI “slop” has become pervasive (व्यापक, सर्वव्यापी), from low-budget advertisements to high-budget political caricatures (a representation or imitation that exaggerates features for comic or critical effect; distortion, mockery, caricature, spoof, satire, misrepresentation/poor imitation). In this context (संदर्भ, प्रसंग), the Union government’s move (कदम, कार्रवाई, उपाय) to propose mandatory labelling of AI-generated content with an amendment to the IT Rules, 2021, advances (आगे बढ़ाना, प्रोत्साहित करना) the global conversation somewhat in navigating (handle, direct, steer, guide (carefully and safely)) this phenomenon (घटना, परिघटना). It is unclear how big the problem of being unable to identify AI slop (low-quality or careless AI-generated content that floods the internet) is for Internet users in India — also the world’s second largest AI user base (उपयोगकर्ता आधार). Two key factors tilt the scales in favour of (के पक्ष में) acting: as with pre-AI disinformation and misinformation, lies and misleading content may at any time explode (increase suddenly, escalate, heighten, multiply) into virality (the fact of being viral), granting them a disproportionate (असंगत, अनुपातहीन) place in the democratic setup; and the technology to create photorealistic content that deceives (mislead, misguide, trick, defraud, cheat, swindle) many people is improving every week. Public personalities have frequently complained, sometimes in court, of the usurpation (seizure/taking over someone’s position, rights, or likeness without legal authority) of their likenesses in the service of unscrupulous (dishonest, unethical, or having no moral principles) projects.
Unlike mandatory smoking warnings (a statutory health message displayed in films or advertisements that show smoking) at the cinema and on OTT streaming services, an intervention (the process of intervening in something; stepping in, involvement, interference) that had little industry buy-in (agreement, acceptance of something (an idea/decision) that someone suggests) before being imposed on entertainment producers and consumers alike (equally, in the same way) with nothing to reliably show for impact, labelling has been offered up by (increased or raised by) large social media and AI firms from the very beginning of synthetic content’s increasing accessibility. Meta, Inc. decided last year to label AI-generated content on Facebook, while the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) has brought industry players together for working on “digital provenance (information that verifies where digital content originated and how it was created)” issues, borrowing a concept from the art appraisal (evaluation, assessment, or judgment of quality or value) world. Subordinate (lower in rank, position, or importance; supporting) legislation (law, regulation, act, statute, bill) may not have been the ideal instrument (means, medium, mechanism, channel, vehicle) to effect this change — the IT Rules already regulate streaming services (an online platform that delivers video or audio content in real time), social media content removals and the now-prohibited real money gaming industry, all without being tested in Parliament. At some point, these rules need to be explicitly (absolutely, directly, clearly, obviously, categorically, definitely, conclusively, unquestionably, unconditionally, unequivocally, unambiguously, unqualifiedly, outright) considered by people’s representatives (a member of a legislature (parliament/congress/council/legislative assembly); legislator, (elected) representative, lawmaker). Technology policymakers have mused (think deeply, reflect, or ponder) throughout the Internet-era that regulation (rule, directive, guideline, instruction, order) lags behind innovation. The government must be willing to dynamically (actively and adaptively, responding to change or movement) follow up this proposal with agile (able to move or act quickly and flexibly) action both in terms of (with regard to; concerning; related to) relaxing rules that have outlived (survive, withstand, weather, live through, come through) their utility (usefulness, practicality, or value for a particular purpose), and introducing new ones according to requirement.
