  • Question 1
    1 / -0
How many elements of unsaturation does a molecule with the chemical formula $$C_5H_8$$ have?
    Solution
It has $$4$$ elements (carbon) that are bonded by the double bond and are unsaturated.

    Directions For Questions

An organic compound $$X$$ is widely used as a preservative in pickles and has a molecular formula $$C_2H_4O_2$$. This compound reacts with ethanol to form a sweet smelling compound $$Y$$.

Which gas is produced when compound $$X$$ reacts with washing soda?
    Solution

    (a) X is ethanoic acid, $$CH_3COOH$$.

    (b) Compound X can be obtained from compound Y by the action of an acid or a base i.e. by saponification.

    (c) CO2 gas is produced.

    $$CH_3COOH+Na_2CO_3\rightarrow2CH_3COONa+CO_2$$

  • Question 3
    1 / -0
An organic compound 'A' produces a gas with brisk effervescence when sodium bicarbonate is added to it. The compound 'A' contains the same number of carbons as in ethane. The compound 'A' reacts with ethanol to form a sweet-smelling compound 'C' in presence of conc. $$H_2SO_4$$ acid. Then the name of compound A and the gas evolved is :
    Solution
A contains the same number of carbon as ethane. So the number of carbon atoms is 2.

A produces brisk effervescence when sodium bicarbonate is added to it. Therefore carbon dioxide is evolved. Hence it's an organic acid with two carbons, ethanoic acid- $$CH_3COOH$$.

     $$CH_3COOH  + NaHCO_3 \rightarrow CH_3COONa +CO_2 +H_2O $$

We know that esters are sweet smelling substances that are used in perfumes. These are formed when a carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol in presence of conc. $$H_2SO_4$$.

Since, new compound A (i.e., ethanoic acid) reacts with ethanol (an alcohol) in presence of conc. $$H_2SO_4$$ to form a sweet smelling substance which is used in perfumes, therefore C must be an ester, i.e., ethyl ethanoate.

    $$CH_3COOH+C_2H_5OH\xrightarrow{Conc. H_2SO_4}CH_3COOCH_2CH_3+H_2O$$

    Option A is correct.
  • Question 4
    1 / -0
Which of the following statement(s) is/are correct?
    (1) Graphite is used in making electrodes because it can conduct electricity.
    (2) Graphite is used as a solid lubricant.
    (3) Graphite is used in the manufacture of crucibles.
    (4) Graphite is also known as the black lead.
    Solution
Graphite, one of the allotropes of carbon, that is used to
    (i) Used in making electrode as it is a good conductor of electricity.
(ii) Used as a solid lubricant.
(iii) Used as manufacturing in the crucible.
(iv) Also known as the black lead.
  • Question 5
    1 / -0
Assertion: When a hydrocarbon is combusted in air, carbon monoxide is always the major product.
Reason: Air contains much more nitrogen than oxygen.
    Solution
Assertion: When a hydrocarbon is combusted in air, $$CO_2$$ is the major product whereas $$CO$$ is produced if there is incomplete combustion of some hydrocarbon.
Reason: Air contains much more nitrogen than air.
    $$N_2= 78$$%
    $$O_2 = 21$$%
Assertion is a wrong statement and Reason is a correct statement.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
An organic compound 'A' produces a gas with brisk effervescence when sodium bicarbonate is added to it. The compound 'A' contains same number of carbons as in ethane. The compound 'A' reacts with ethanol to form a sweet smelling compound 'C' in presence of conc. $$H_2SO_4$$. A and C respectively are :
    Solution
Ethanoic acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate, to form carbon dioxide which produces effervescence as:

    $$CH_{3}COOH + NaHCO_{3} \rightarrow CH_{3}COONa + H_{2}O + CO_{2}$$

Also, ethanoic acid reacts with ethanol to form the ester - ethyl ethanoate as follows:

    $$CH_{3}COOH + C_{2}H_{5}OH \overset{conc.\ H_{2}SO_{4}}{\longrightarrow} CH_{3}COOCH_{2}CH_{3} + H_2O$$

Thus, A is ethanoic acid and C is ethyl ethanoate.
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
Name the process for ethanol to ethene conversion and reactants used.
    Solution
Ethanol can be converted to ethene as:

        $$CH_{3}CH_{2}OH \xrightarrow[hot]{conc.H_{2}SO_{4}} CH_{2}= CH_{2} + H_{2}O$$

In above reaction, dehydration of ethanol takes place in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid.
Hence, the correct option is B.
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Which of the following is pair of homologues?
    Solution
A homologous series is a series of compounds with the same functional group and similar chemical properties in which each successive member differs by $${\text{C}}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}$$.
Hence, $$D$$ is the correct option.
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
Heats of combustion of $$CH_4, C_2H_4, C_2H_6 $$ are -890, -1411 and -1560 KJ/mole respectively. Which has the lowest fuel value in KJ/g?
    Solution
    Fuel value of $$CH_4=\cfrac{890}{16}$$ KJ/g = 55.625 KJ/g

    Fuel value of $$C_2H_4=\cfrac{1411}{28}$$ KJ/g = 50.4 KJ/g

    Fuel value of $$C_2H_6=\cfrac{1560}{30}$$ KJ/g = 52 KJ/mole

$$\therefore $$ Hence lowest fuel value for $$C_2H_4$$
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
The number of carbon compounds is very large because:
    Solution
Carbon forms numerous compounds because of the following reasons: Tetra valency – Carbon atoms readily form covalent bonds with the other atoms. Catenation – Two carbon atoms readily form covalent bonds, and this bond is more stable than the bonds formed by the other elements.
Hence answer is the D option
