    Directions For Questions

The very first time she sang professionally, playback singer Kavita Krishnamurty learnt a lesson she's never forgotten. It was 1970, and at 16, she'd been selected by composer Vijay S. Padukone to sing a 60-second Tamil jingle advertising a popular brand of baby food. Already on edge when she arrived at the recording studio, Kavita was further unnerved to find the legendary Geeta Dutt there, preparing to sing the same jingle in Hindi.
"I'd almost certainly have muffed my lines," Kavita says, "Had not Geeta Dutt done something wonderful. Sensing my nervousness, she smiled and holding my hand said, 'I've heard that you sing well. So don't be afraid. Do your best.'"
"Her words immediately put me at ease and my recording went without a hitch."
Subsequently, during Kavita's struggle to make it as a playback singer, many other - including Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey - provided encouragement and advice. "They all taught me that you shouldn't reach for success by trampling on other people."

    LEARNING FROM MISTAKES
                                            By Peter Hall
I have finally come to the place
Where things can come off the shelf
So I can try to learn from mistakes
And not be so hard on myself.

I no longer need to be opaque
It's time for me to see
That my failures and past mistakes
    Do not label me.

No longer trusting what used to assure
Sorting out things that will last
Mistakes filter out what really endures
Permitting to learn from the past.

I know life has its ups and downs
I can't help things don't go to plan
But mistakes no longer bring 'that frown'
Now that I know who I am.

What does the poet mean by being opaque ?
    Solution
In the context of the poem, the word 'opaque' is clearly signifying how he has been unable to learn from his mistakes and see where he went wrong; he uses the word opaque as something that is opaque doesn't let the light through; symbolic of how he couldn't see the lessons in his mistakes. Since Option C) is the closest in meaning to the above, it is the clear answer.
  • Question 3
    1 / -0
For the following question, arrange the sentences A, B, C, and D to form a logical sequence.
    (A) Is it wise to be foolish?
    (B) Foolish men do not weigh the pros and cons of any course of action they may take.
    (C) But then this lack of caution can also take them places where the wise would shudder to go.
    (D) This can, and often does, have disastrous consequences.
    Solution
Sentence A is a question, which is introductory in nature, a topic can begin with a question, followed by statements that expand on a topic. Here, the question is later expanded with the help of the other sentences. Also, when A is placed between or after the rest of the sentences, it does not form a logical sequence. Hence A comes first.
B follows A; the words "Foolish men do not weigh ... ." begin to explain if it is wise to be foolish.
D follows B because "this" refers to the previous line "foolish men do not weigh the pros and cons" of their actions.
Sentence C begins with a 'but then', which refers to contrast, the contrast being "disastrous consequences" (mentioned in D). C is in contrast to D; the former being: "this... can also take them places where the wise would shudder to go"
    Hence, C follows D.
So, the sequence of sentences is: ABDC and option D is correct.
Options A, B and C are incorrect because they do not contain the correct sequence of sentences.
  • Question 4

For the following question, arrange the sentences A, B, C, and D to form a logical sequence.

    (A) Has the cell-phone made your life any easier?
    (B) There is no doubt that you can now communicate with your loved ones at any time and from anywhere.
    (C) But what about the fact that your boss can reach you in the middle of a holiday?
    (D) You may answer this question at your own risk.
    Solution
The set of sentences begins with a question (sentence A) where the cell-phone is introduced. This eliminates options (A) and (D). Between options (B) and (C), you may see that D follows A and therefore, option (B) is the best choice.

[passage-header]Read the passage given below and complete the summary by filling in the appropriate word.[/passage-header]The Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean are a rocky, lonely spot, but they are also one of the most unusual places in the world. The reason is that they are the home of some of the last giant tortoises left on earth.
Weighing hundreds of pounds, these tortoises wander slowly around the rocks and sand of the islands. Each of these islands has its own particular kinds of tortoises. There are seven different kinds of tortoises on the eight islands. Hundreds of years ago, thousands of tortoises wandered around these islands. All that changed when people started landing there. When people first arrived, their ships had no refrigerators. This meant that fresh food was always a problem for the sailors on board. The giant tortoises provided a solution to this problem. Ships would anchor off the islands, and crew would seize as many tortoises as they could. Once the animals were aboard the ship, the crew would roll the tortoises onto their backs and use them for soups and stews.

Ships would anchor off the islands ________  the shore.
    Solution
In the passage it is mentioned that the ships would anchor off the islands, it means that ships would anchor 'near' the islands. The ships can never anchor at or in the shore as they need a little amount of water to stay afloat. The ships would not even anchor far away from shore as the crew had to carry the giant tortoises on board.

    Directions For Questions

Read the passage given below and answer the question that follows:
Orang-utans require less food than humans, pound-for-pound, lead author Herman Pontzer said. When they do eat, orang-utans nibble mostly on ripe fruit, along with smaller portions of leaves and seed. Even in captivity, this diet doesn't diminish as orang-utans get up and go. They wake up early after a long night's sleep, explained Pontzer, an assistant professor of anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis. Then they spend the day socializing, exploring their indoor or outdoor enclosures. They also regularly engage in games with researchers. According to a study, published in the latest Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, these activities of the orang-utans, taken together, add up to the same level of exercise performed by humans in physically demanding agricultural lifestyles. In the wild, orang-utans live in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra where food availability is highly variable and unpredictable, Pontzer added. Like fresh fruit from the garden, the pickings are often feast or famine. But the trade-off, he added, is that low energy throughout means less energy is available to do things like grow and reproduce. So orang-utans grow slowly and reproduce slowly, which is evolutionarily risky because an orang-utan might die before it passes on its genes. Human mothers can have a child every two to four years, but orang-utans in the wild only reproduce every seven to eight years. Orang-utans are highly endangered, with many lost due to human activities such as logging, mining, and the illegal pet trade. Pontzer hopes
the study will highlight how much information we will lose about our closest relatives and our own evolutionary history if we let them go extinct.

  • Question 8

Arrange the following in a logical sequence of sentences:
    (a) Hi, Nilay. I'm home
    (b) I've been painting my room, Mum.
    (c) Oh, Nilay! Whatever have you been doing?
    (d) I'm upstairs, Mum.
    Solution
The text given is a conversation between Nilay and his mother.
The first sentence is (a) as that begins the conversation. So, this eliminates options B and D.  Sentence (d) is the logical reply to sentence (a) and, so, the correct sequence is a,d,c,b.
  • Question 9

For the following question, arrange the sentences A, B, C, and D to form a logical sequence
    (A) I said my prayers and tried to sleep early.
    (B) I gave up trying to sleep and went for a walk.
    (C) I was very nervous the night before my first recording.
    (D) But the fear of not being able to sing in the studio haunted me.
    Solution
The first statement in the sequence should be the one that introduces a new topic. It should not be a continuation or extension of a topic.
C is first in the sequence: C is chronologically first. It starts talking about the subject who is nervous the night before his/her first recording.
C is followed by A: A comes directly next. It says, as the subject is nervous, he/she said prayers and tried to sleep early.
A is followed by D: D follows C's actions. As the subject tried to sleep he/she was haunted by the fear of not being able to sing.
D is followed by B: B continues D's action. It says that as the subject was haunted by fear, he/she gave up on sleeping and went for a walk instead.
Thus, the correct sequence is C A D B. Hence, D is the correct option.

[passage-header]Read the following passage carefully and answer the question given below:[/passage-header]People are seldom aware that their comfortable living depends upon the work of several thousands of persons. The first thing, for instance, almost everyone looks forward to in the morning is a hot cup of tea. This cup of tea involves the work of thousands of people. This can be easily shown. Consider the number of things we require to prepare a cup of tea, such as clean drinking water, tea, sugar, milk, gas, burner, pot, crockery, strainer, spoon and so on.

Tea is grown in distant plantations and made available to the consumers through a vast network employing hundreds of workers. Consider further the machinery required for sugar mills. The production of this machinery involves a long chain of processes and operations - mining of coal and iron ore, manufacture of steel and machine tools, in which thousands of workers are employed. The same argument holds good with regard to the supply of milk. The production of other items such as gas, burner, crockery, spoons, etc., requires the service of hundreds of workers. And recall how agitated we are if the milk van is late in the morning, maybe because its tire has burst on the way. This may be due to its poor maintenance or the poor condition of the roads.
