  • Question 1
    1 / -0
Change the following statement into indirect speech.

The Captain said, "Let us play a friendly match."
    Solution
Indirect Speech is used to report something in our own words.
Suggestions are often reported using the verbs suggest, insist, recommend, request, demand and propose followed by that clause. 'Should' is used in the clause.
Thus, option D is the correct answer according to the rules.
  • Question 2
    1 / -0
Change the following statement into indirect speech.
I said, "If you can lend me the money I needn't go to the bank."
    Solution
The given sentence is a condition.
According to the rules of Narration and Reporting, in a conditional sentence the present indefinite tense of “if” clause changes into the past indefinite tense. Therefore, 'lend' changes into 'could lend'. In the result clause the verb takes 'would have' or 'have' with it. The pronoun 'you' changes into 'he'.
Thus in indirect speech, the sentence must be,
I said if he could lend me the money I needn't have to go the bank.
Thus option D is the correct answer.
Options A,B,C are incorrect as they do not follow the rules of Narration and Reporting.
  • Question 3
    1 / -0
You: Do you know what Fred is doing?
Charlie: I don't know what Fred is doing.
This is the conversation between Charlie and You yesterday.
Later that day you tell another friend about what Charlie said.

Change the sentence below in reported speech:
Charlie: I don't know what Fred is doing.
    Solution

The two ways of relating what a person has said are 1)direct and 2)indirect (reported).

In the direct speech, the exact words of the original speaker are repeated.

In the indirect speech (reported speech), the exact meaning of what the speaker told is expressed but not necessarily in the speaker’s exact words.

Option C is correct as the given sentence is in the simple present tense and the appropriate introductory verb 'said ' is used.

Options  A,B, and D are wrong as 'don't', 'wasn't knowing' and 'doesn't know' cannot be used respectively.

The correct answer is C)He said that he didn't know what Fred was doing

  • Question 4
    1 / -0
    Somebody is following us.
Rewrite the sentence beginning from 'We....':
    Solution

An action in a sentence can be represented in two ways, namely active and passive voice.

The passive voice always uses the past participle form of the main verb irrespective of any tense. Only the auxiliary verbs depend upon the sentence given in active voice.

The correct answer is C)We are being followed (by someone).

The option C is correct as the given sentence is in active voice and to transform it into passive voice , the object of the given sentence (us) comes in the place of the subject(somebody) and vice versa. Also, as the sentence is in the present continuous tense, 'being' is added after the helping verb 'are' and before the past participle form of the main verb(follow).

Options A,B, and D are wrong as being is missing , were , and were being cannot be used respectively.

  • Question 5
    1 / -0
You: When you meet Ann please tell her that you saw me?
Charlie: I will tell Ann that I saw you.
This is the conversation between Charlie and You yesterday.
Later that day you tell another friend about what Charlie said.
    Use reported Speech:
    Solution
Indirect Speech is used to report something in our own words.
In the case of simple past tense, reported speech is formed by using the past perfect tense. 'Will' changes to 'would'. Future tense does not change in indirect speech.
The sentence would become - He said he would tell Ann he had seen me.
Thus, option B is the correct answer according to the rules.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
I didn't want to delay Ann, so I said to her, "Don't wait for me if I'm late".
Rewrite the given direct speech in indirect speech.

Option D is correct as the sentence in the inverted commas is in the simple present tense and the appropriate introductory verb 'advised' is used with the appropriate preposition 'to' after 'not'.

Options A, B, and C are wrong as 'am', 'do' and 'requested' cannot be used respectively.

The correct answer is D)I advised her not to wait for me if I was late.

  • Question 7
    1 / -0
Convert the given direct speech sentence into indirect speech.
Sarah was driving too slowly, so I said to her "Hurry up".

Option B is correct as the sentence in the inverted commas is in the simple present tense and the appropriate introductory verb 'advised' is used with the appropriate preposition 'to'.

Options A, C, and D are wrong as 'told', 'requested' and 'asked' cannot be used respectively.

The correct answer is B)I advised her to hurry up.

  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Rewrite the following in passive voice without using 'somebody/they/people' etc.:
They cancelled all flights because of fog.
    Solution
The given sentence is in active voice as the subject 'they' performs an action 'cancelled' against the object 'flights'.
To change to passive voice, the object takes the place of the subject and vice versa and the verb form of the sentence is also changed from active form to passive.

'Subject (They) + verb (cancelled) + object (all flights) + prepositional phrase (because of fog)' changes to:
'New subject (All flights) + verb (were cancelled) + prepositional phrase (because of fog)'

This can be seen in option D, hence it's the right answer.
The pronoun 'they' is indefinite, it does not refer to a particular person. Hence in passive voice it can be implied.

Option A: The verb form 'are cancelled' expresses the simple present tense whereas the sentence is in simple past tense.
Option B: The verb 'got' is used in informal English and hence isn't suitable here.
Option C: The verb form 'had to be' expresses compulsion and conveys a meaning different from the original sentence.
Hence options A, B and C are incorrect.
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
Transform the given sentence from active to passive:
    Did Ann receive my letter?
    Solution
A sentence is in active voice when the subject performs the action.
A sentence is in passive voice when the subject receives the action.
While converting a sentence from active to passive, the subject becomes the object and vice versa.
The given sentence is in the past tense (did), hence its passive voice must also be in the past tense.
Options A and C: In option C, the sentence has accurately been changed to the passive voice.
The subject is now 'my letter', it 'was' received by Ann, the new object.
When changing from active to passive, the verb form changes. Hence, 'did' will change to 'was'. This is because 'did' is an active verb, 'did' itself means 'performed an action'.
Hence option A is incorrect and C is correct.
Option B is incorrect because the tense has been changed to simple present. Also, 'does' is an active verb.
Option D is incorrect for the same reason, 'is' is in simple present tense and indicates that the action in the present time.
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
You: Are you going on a holiday?
Charlie: I want to go on a holiday but I can't afford it.

This is the conversation between Charlie and You yesterday.
Later that day you tell another friend about what Charlie said.
    Use reported Speech:
    Solution
Indirect Speech is used to report something in our own words.
In the case of present simple tense, reported speech is formed by using the simple past tense. Inverted commas are removed and 'that' is used as a conjunction. 'Can' changes to 'could' in indirect speech.
The sentence would become - He said that he wanted to go on holiday but he couldn't afford it.
Thus, option B is the correct answer according to the rules.
