    Directions For Questions

[passage-header]Read the following passage and answer the question given after it. [/passage-header]Conducting interviews of parents is vital to the whole process of school admissions. Most progressive schools believe in the involvement of parents in a child's admission test. Interviews, therefore, become the first building block of a long-term relationship between the schools and the parents.

The main objective of an interview is to find out the value system of the parents and to see whether they are in sync with the school's philosophy and vision. It is extremely important to develop at the beginning itself, a good relationship between parents and teachers. A parent is the child's first teacher and critical to his/her success. It's always good for schools to know in advance what parents expect from the school. This knowledge can be attained by interviewing parents. Parents are also interviewed to assess their ward's behavior.

A school is a heterogeneous entity. There are some bright pupils and some not so bright ones; some are good in sports, while others have no artistic bent of mind. These hidden talents come to the fore only when the school authorities interact with parents.

Critics may argue interviews put too much pressure on parents. Indeed, parents get tense but then such interactions happen in a pleasant atmosphere. Many schools are now emphasizing on extra-curricular activities, which means students have to spend more time in school and interact more with their peers. Therefore, it becomes imperative to have the right mix of pupils from different backgrounds. Interviews help schools choose the right combination of students.

What can be the basis of a long-term relationship between schools and the parents?
    Solution
The Passage illustrates that the main objective of an interview is to find out the value system of the parents and to see whether they are in sync with the school's philosophy and vision.
Interviews, therefore, become the first building block for a long-term relationship between the schools and the parents.
Hence Option B is the right answer.
There is no evidence in the passage to suggest that Option A, Option C and Option D are the right answers.
    Therefore, they are incorrect.

    Directions For Questions

[passage-header]Read the passage and answer the question that follows:[/passage-header]Did you know that there are at least 14 million blind people in the world? There are many degrees of blindness, so it is hard to define blindness. Some people cannot even see light. Others can only tell light from dark. Still, others have a small amount of vision.
Of all the blind people in the world, only a small percentage are born blind. Blindness at birth is called congenital blindness. The causes of it are not all known. Blindness that occurs after birth is caused mainly by any disease of the eyes. A general disease of the body, such as diabetes or meningitis, rather than a disease of the eye, may also cause blindness. Accidents and explosions are two other causes of blindness.
In countries where people live longer because of good medical care and a high standard of living, old age often brings on certain eye conditions. Two of these eye conditions are cataract and glaucoma. Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness. It is a clouding of the lens of the eye. The lens, the transparent part of the eye through which light rays pass, becomes cloudy, and only strong light rays can pass through it. There is consequently a loss of vision. Cataracts can be removed by surgery. With glaucoma, there is a hardening of the eyeball and great pressure inside the eye. Today there are medicines to control glaucoma if it is discovered in time. The single cause of loss of sight is Trachoma. It is a contagious disease of the eye caused by a virus. It affects the inner lining of the eyelids. Also, blood vessels grow over the cornea. This can destroy the vision. Antibiotics can now control trachoma, but it is still common in some parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Many examples are cited in the above passage which cause blindness. Which of the following may not be the cause of blindness?
    Solution
Option D is correct because there is no mention of  the word 'Tsunami' anywhere in the passage.
Options A and B are incorrect beacuse it is clearly mentioned in the passage that - 'A general disease of the body, such as diabetes or meningitis, rather than a disease of the eye, may also cause blindness.'
Option C is incorrect because the passage illustrates that - 'Accidents and explosions are two other causes of blindness.'

    Directions For Questions

[passage-header]Read the following passage and answer the question given after it:[/passage-header]
Nobel laureate and writer of the world famous Gitanjali, Rabindranath Tagore, was born on May 8, 1861. Rabindranath, whose father, Maharishi Devendranath Tagore was one of the pillars of Brahmo Samaj, lost his mother quite early in life. This void in his life developed in him an attraction for nature which was to become a dominant passion of his life. Rabindranath Tagore developed early an aversion for schools of his times, which according to him were no better than factories, where receiving an education was sheer torture for passive youngsters. The kind of education that was imparted there had no relationship with life and its needs. Gurudev, therefore, started the Shantiniketan in 1901. Having a humble beginning with only 2 or 3 students, it is now famous as the Vishwabharti.
The description of a student's daily routine in the ashram conveys its rich beauty. Long before sunrise, like the birds in the mango groves, the children get up. The members of the choir are the first to rise and go around the ashram singing the morning hymns. After completing the morning ablutions, each child takes his 'asan' into the fields to sit down on it to meditate alone. Later on, before the school work begins, the children stand together in the shade of the trees and sing their hymns to God.
Till about 10:30 the school work goes on. There are no classrooms. The students sit with their teachers in the open air under the trees. There are no large classes; a group of 8-10 boys sits around the teacher, asking him questions, carrying out a conversation, or discussing issues. Very few books are used, and like the education which Plato advocated, the greater part of it is carried on through conversation. The students soon learn to bring all their doubts and difficulties to their teachers who, in turn, become greatly interested in helping each of their students. Such an education could never be dull.

What developed in Rabindranath an attraction for nature?
    Solution
Option B is correct because it is clearly illustrated in the first paragraph of the passage that - 'Rabindranath, whose father, Maharishi Devendranath Tagore was one of the pillars of Brahmo Samaj, lost his mother quite early in life.
This void in his life developed in him an attraction for nature which was to become a dominant passion of his life.'
There is no evidence in the passage to suggest that Options A, C, and D are the right answers.
    Hence, these are incorrect.

    Directions For Questions

[passage-header]Read the following passage and answer the question that follows. [/passage-header]Biologists in New Zealand are baffled by the sudden death of a large number of the world's rarest species of penguins. At least a third of the 400 yellow-eyed penguins that live on the Otago Peninsula, in New Zealand's South Island, have died since December. The loss represents around 15 per cent of all yellow-eyed penguins and threatens to extinguish the mainland population. The disappearance of this group of penguins is particularly serious for the species because the birds are genetically distinct from those on the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island. Their disappearance would narrow the species' gene pool considerably.
The first penguins died in December and by February the population had crashed. Post-mortem examinations showed no sign of poisoning by heavy metals or pesticides, nor was there any sign of a virus. Whatever killed the birds acted very quickly in the eight hours they were at sea feeding on the day they died and most of the corpses recovered were near their home beaches. "Whatever it is, seems to make them sick, then head for home and collapse on the beach," said one of the scientists.
Suggestions of a cause range from a change in food supply caused by climatic change, to poisoning by a biological toxin-perhaps from an algal bloom. The sea has been particularly warm this summer, but temperature alone would not kill the penguins; nor had the unusual climatic conditions interfered with the birds' feeding. None of the dead birds showed any signs of disease.

What acted very quickly on the birds?
    Solution
From the statement, “ whatever killed the birds acted very quickly”, it is obvious to note that the exact cause of death is not known, but it acted very quickly, while they were at the sea. Hence option D is the correct answer, and the remaining are incorrect.

    Directions For Questions

Read the passage and answer the question that follows:
Lo and Europa, the inner two of Jupiter's four largest moons, are about the size of Earth's moon and are composed mostly or entirely of rock and metal. Ganymede and Callisto are larger and roughly half ice. Thus, these four moons are somewhat analogous to the planets of the solar system, in which the rock- and metal-rich inner planets are distinct from the much larger gas- and ice-rich outer planets. Jupiter's moons are, however, more "systematic":
Many of their properties vary continuously with their distance from Jupiter. For example, Lo is ice-free, Europa has a surface shell of ice, and while Ganymede and Callisto are both ice-rich, outermost Callisto has more.
This compositional gradient has geological parallels. Lo is extremely geologically active, Europa seems to be active on a more modest scale, and Ganymede has undergone bouts of activity in its geological past. Only Callisto reveals no geological activity. In a similar fashion, Callisto's surface is very heavily cratered from the impact of comets and asteroids; Ganymede, like Earth's moon, is heavily cratered in parts; Europa is very lightly cratered; and no craters have been detected on Lo, even though Jupiter's gravity attracts comets and asteroids passing near it, substantially increasing the bombardment rate of the inner moons compared to that of the outer ones. But because of Lo's high degree of geological activity, its surface undergoes more-or-less continuous volcanic resurfacing.

    ...view full instructions

According to the passage, the difference in the amount of cratering on Callisto's and Lo's respective surfaces can probably be explained by the difference between these two moons with respect to which of the following factors?
    Solution
Callisto's surface is very heavily cratered from the impact of comets and asteroids, and it also reveals no geological activity.
This is mentioned in the line: "Only Callisto reveals no geological activity. In a similar fashion, Callisto's surface is very heavily cratered from the impact of comets and asteroids..."
On the other hand, Lo does not have any craters, and there's a reason given for it as well, that even though Jupiter attracts comets and asteroids, there is more bombardment of the inner moons (Lo and Europa), Lo's geological activity results in volcanic resurfacing and hence, no craters.
It's mentioned here: "...and no craters have been detected on Lo, even though Jupiter's gravity attracts comets and asteroids...increasing the bombardment rate of the inner moons... But because of Lo's high degree of geological activity, its surface undergoes more-or-less continuous volcanic resurfacing."
Between these two moons, we can conclude that it is the level of geological activity (negligible in Callisto and very high in Lo) that determines the amount of cratering on their surfaces and that the difference between their cratering is explained by the difference between their geological activities.
    Hence option E is correct.
The rest of the options 'size', 'ice content', 'rate of bombardment', 'influence of Jupiter's other moons' do not affect the cratering of the surface of these moons, as their geological activity eventually does.
    Hence options A, B, C and D are incorrect.

[passage-header]Read the passage given below and answer the question that follows: [/passage-header]    Eco efficiency (measures to minimize environmental impact through the reduction or elimination of waste from production processes) has become a goal for companies worldwide, with many realizing significant cost savings from such innovations. Peter Senge and Goran Carstedt see this development as laudable but suggest that simply adopting ecoefficiency innovations could actually worse environmentally, stresses in the future. Such innovations reduce production waste but do not alter the number of products manufactured nor the waste generated from their use and discard; indeed, most companies invest in eco-efficiency improvements in order to increase profits and growth. Moreover, there is no guarantee that increased economic growth from ecoefficiency will come in similarly ecoefficient ways since in today's global markets, greater profits may be turned into investment capital that could easily be reinvested in old-style eco-inefficient industries. Even a vastly more ecoefficient industrial system could, were it to grow much larger, generate a total waste and destroy more habitat and species than would a smaller, less ecoefficient economy. Senge and Carstedt argue that to preserve the global environment and sustain economic growth, businesses must develop a new systemic approach that reduces total material use and total accumulated waste.
Focusing exclusively on eco-efficiency, which offers a compelling business case according to established thinking, may distract companies from pursuing radically different products and business models.

The primary purpose of the passage is to ________
    Solution
Option C is the correct answer as the passage expresses concerns regarding the use of eco-efficiency measures used by companies worldwide. As the last line of the passage clearly states, following one particular method of business strategy might not prove to be beneficial for the company in future.
Thus options A,B,D are incorrect answers.

[passage-header]Read the following passage and answer the question that follows:[/passage-header]
Chanakya is famous in the history of India as a sage-like person who by his political shrewdness and expedience helped in the establishment of the mighty Mauryan Empire. Chanakya was wise, clever, foresighted, determined and deeply read in economics, diplomacy, and politics. There is a legend that Chanakya was once invited to the court of the Nanda rulers of Magadha where he was insulted. Chanakya took a vow to cause the downfall of the Nanda Dynasty. With the help of a brave and capable general Chandra Gupta, he succeeded in fulfilling his vow and founded a new Mauryan Dynasty in Magadha. He expelled the Greek invader from India with his help again. Chanakya served as friend, philosopher, and guide to Chandragupta Maurya. Chanakya is also believed to be the author of Arthashastra, the classical Indian treatise on statecraft. It lays down rules of government and also gives a detailed account of the contemporary state administration. Chanakya was born in a poor Brahmin family of Taxila. His real name was Vishnugupta. Chanakya is also known as Kautilya because of his 'Kut-Niti' or diplomacy. He was educated at Taxila, a great educational center in those times. In his personal life, Chanakya was like an ascetic and the legend goes that he lived in a mud hut near the royal palace. A very famous Sanskrit play, Mudrakhassa, has for its theme one of the diplomatic feats of Chanakya. Most of the foreign diplomatic enclaves in New Delhi are situated in an area named after him known as Chanakyapuri.
