Most progressive schools believe in the involvement of parents in a child's admission test. Interviews, therefore, become the first building block of a long-term relationship between the schools and the parents.

The main objective of an interview is to find out the value system of the parents and to see whether they are in sync with the school's philosophy and vision. It is extremely important to develop at the beginning itself, a good relationship between parents and teachers. A parent is the child's first teacher and critical to his/her success. It's always good for schools to know in advance what parents expect from the school. This knowledge can be attained by interviewing parents. Parents are also interviewed to assess their ward's behavior.

A school is a heterogeneous entity. There are some bright pupils and some not so bright ones; some are good in sports, while others have no artistic bent of mind. These hidden talents come to the fore only when the school authorities interact with parents.

Critics may argue interviews put too much pressure on parents. Indeed, parents get tense but then such interactions happen in a pleasant atmosphere. Many schools are now emphasizing on extra-curricular activities, which means students have to spend more time in school and interact more with their peers. Therefore, it becomes imperative to have the right mix of pupils from different backgrounds. Interviews help schools choose the right combination of students.

Blindness that occurs after birth is caused mainly by any disease of the eyes. A general disease of the body, such as diabetes or meningitis, rather than a disease of the eye, may also cause blindness. Accidents and explosions are two other causes of blindness.
In countries where people live longer because of good medical care and a high standard of living, old age often brings on certain eye conditions. Two of these eye conditions are cataract and glaucoma. Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness. It is a clouding of the lens of the eye. The lens, the transparent part of the eye through which light rays pass, becomes cloudy, and only strong light rays can pass through it. There is consequently a loss of vision. Cataracts can be removed by surgery. With glaucoma, there is a hardening of the eyeball and great pressure inside the eye. Today there are medicines to control glaucoma if it is discovered in time. The single cause of loss of sight is Trachoma. It is a contagious disease of the eye caused by a virus. It affects the inner lining of the eyelids. Also, blood vessels grow over the cornea. This can destroy the vision. Antibiotics can now control trachoma, but it is still common in some parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Nobel laureate and writer of the world famous Gitanjali, Rabindranath Tagore, was born on May 8, 1861. Rabindranath, whose father, Maharishi Devendranath Tagore was one of the pillars of Brahmo Samaj, lost his mother quite early in life. This void in his life developed in him an attraction for nature which was to become a dominant passion of his life. Rabindranath Tagore developed early an aversion for schools of his times, which according to him were no better than factories, where receiving an education was sheer torture for passive youngsters. The kind of education that was imparted there had no relationship with life and its needs. Gurudev, therefore, started the Shantiniketan in 1901. Having a humble beginning with only 2 or 3 students, it is now famous as the Vishwabharti.
The description of a student's daily routine in the ashram conveys its rich beauty. Long before sunrise, like the birds in the mango groves, the children get up. The members of the choir are the first to rise and go around the ashram singing the morning hymns. After completing the morning ablutions, each child takes his 'asan' into the fields to sit down on it to meditate alone. Later on, before the school work begins, the children stand together in the shade of the trees and sing their hymns to God.
Till about 10:30 the school work goes on. There are no classrooms. The students sit with their teachers in the open air under the trees. There are no large classes; a group of 8-10 boys sits around the teacher, asking him questions, carrying out a conversation, or discussing issues. Very few books are used, and like the education which Plato advocated, the greater part of it is carried on through conversation. The students soon learn to bring all their doubts and difficulties to their teachers who, in turn, become greatly interested in helping each of their students. Such an education could never be dull.

At least a third of the 400 yellow-eyed penguins that live on the Otago Peninsula, in New Zealand's South Island, have died since December. The loss represents around 15 per cent of all yellow-eyed penguins and threatens to extinguish the mainland population. The disappearance of this group of penguins is particularly serious for the species because the birds are genetically distinct from those on the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island. Their disappearance would narrow the species' gene pool considerably.
The first penguins died in December and by February the population had crashed. Post-mortem examinations showed no sign of poisoning by heavy metals or pesticides, nor was there any sign of a virus. Whatever killed the birds acted very quickly in the eight hours they were at sea feeding on the day they died and most of the corpses recovered were near their home beaches. "Whatever it is, seems to make them sick, then head for home and collapse on the beach," said one of the scientists.
Suggestions of a cause range from a change in food supply caused by climatic change, to poisoning by a biological toxin-perhaps from an algal bloom. The sea has been particularly warm this summer, but temperature alone would not kill the penguins; nor had the unusual climatic conditions interfered with the birds' feeding.
