  • Question 1
    5 / -1

Identify the best option that suits the statement.

    A textbook always has _______.

    Solution

    The logic followed is:

A textbook always has Pages. Without pages, it can't be called a textbook. A textbook can be either with or without tables, pictures, or illustrations but it can't be without a page.

Hence, the correct answer is "pages".

  • Question 2
    5 / -1

Consider the given statement and state which of the given assumptions are implicit in the statement.

    Statement:

A notice indicating, "Don't spill the trash; please use the dustbin."

    Assumptions:

    1. People often do not follow instructions.

    2. People tend to read notices and follow instructions.

    Solution

The notice is an imperative statement requesting people to follow the instruction- 'use the dustbin'.

    • From the given statement, it can be observed that the notice is displayed with the expectation or belief that people usually read it and follow the request. Thus, the assumption is implicit that people tend to read notices and follow the instructions given in them.
    • Only one of the assumptions can be implicit in this case. As assumption 2 is implicit, assumption 1 is not implicit.

Hence the correct answer is option 4.

  • Question 3
    5 / -1

Assertion (A): Most of the Himalayan rivers are perennial

Reason (R): These rivers are fed by melting snow

    Solution

    The logic follows here is:

The Assertion is correct because The Himalayan rivers are perennial in nature, i.e., water flows throughout the year in these rivers.

The Reason is correct because these rivers receive water both from the monsoons and snow-melt.

Thus, the Reason is the correct explanation of A.

Hence, the correct answer is "Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A".

    Additional Information

    • The rivers that have water throughout the year are called perennial rivers.
      • In India Himalayan Rivers like Ganga and Brahmaputra are perennial rivers.
      • These are both rain-fed and formed through the melting of the glaciers.
      • The Himalayas are drained by 19 major rivers, of which the Indus and the Brahmaputra are the largest, each having catchment basins in the mountains of about 100,000 square miles (260,000 square km) in extent.
      • Five of the 19 rivers, with a total catchment area of about 51,000 square miles (132,000 square km), belong to the Indus system—the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi, the Beas, and the Sutlej—and collectively define the vast region divided between Punjab state in India and Punjab province in Pakistan.
        • Of the remaining rivers, nine belong to the Ganges system—the Ganges, Yamuna, Ramganga, Kali (Kali Gandak), Karnali, Rapti, Gandak, Bagmati, and Kosi rivers—draining roughly 84,000 square miles (218,000 square km) in the mountains, and three belong to the Brahmaputra system—the Tista, the Raidak, and the Manas—draining another 71,000 square miles (184,000 square km) in the Himalayas.
  • Question 4
    5 / -1

Select the option that is true with respect to the following two statements, named Assertion (A) and Reason (R).

Assertion (A): We should sit in sunlight for some time every day.

Reason (R): Vitamin D is a special vitamin that is produced when the cholesterol present in your skin is exposed to sunlight.

    Solution

    The logic followed is:

The Assertion is correct because Vitamin D is unique because it can be made in the skin from exposure to sunlight. UVB light from the sun strikes the skin, and humans synthesize vitamin D3, so it is the most “natural” form.

Thus we should sit in sunlight for some time every day.

The reason is correct because Vitamin D is the only vitamin that can be formed naturally by the body by getting exposed to the sun and that is why it is called the sunshine vitamin. A 5-30 min exposure to the Sun between 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. results in the formation of a sufficient amount of vitamin D.

Thus we can say A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Hence, the correct answer is "Option 3".

  • Question 5
    5 / -1

Direction: In each of these questions are given two statements (A) and (B) These statements may be either independent causes or may be effects of independent causes or of a common cause. Read both the statements and give an answer.

(A): In last two years, there is a considerable cancellation of flights due to fog in North India.

(B): In last two years, there is a considerable improvement in passenger amenities on all airports of North India.

    Solution

    The logic followed is:

Both the statements are effects of independent causes. There have been cancellations because of the fog while there has been considerable improvement in passenger amenities because of some unstated reason.

Hence, the correct answer is "Option 3".

    Additional Information

    What are Causes?

Causes are the conditions under which an event occurs.

For example, can you guess the causes for the following?

The police increasing security around the President's house.

Lots of people buying a particularly expensive brand of washing machines around Diwali. Easily, we can guess the causes for the above events.

There were reports of threats against the President.

There was a high discount or sale for that brand during Diwali.

    Sufficient & Necessary Conditions:

In a cause and effect question, the cause is the sufficient condition. It is assumed that the sufficient condition of the occurrence of the events must include the different necessary conditions as well.

A necessary condition is one that must be satisfied for the occurrence of an event.

E.g. You must adhere to the deadline to get your work appraised.

This means if you get your work appraised, you have to adhere to the deadline. Or; if you do not adhere to the deadline, you do not get your work appraised.

A condition is called a sufficient condition if in a certain event, you are satisfied with the results.

E.g. Being human is a sufficient condition for being a mammal. The act of being a human is not possible unless one is also a mammal. But it is not necessary that being human is a necessary condition for being a mammal.

  • Question 6
    5 / -1

In the question below is given a statement followed by two courses of action numbered I and II. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true and on the basis of the information given in the statement, decide which of the suggested course of action logically follow(s) for pursuing.

Statement: The riots in the city have caused immeasurable property destruction and many casualties.

    Courses of Action:

I: The people should fight the rioters and spread the destruction pictures on social media.

II: The Government should immediately deploy anti-riot forces in the affected areas.

    Solution

From the statement above, we understand the massive destruction caused by the riots. But the course of action mentioned in I is not viable as it will continue the riot and will create more destruction.
    Therefore, I does not follow.

On the other hand, immediately deploying anti-riot forces in the affected areas will be a feasible course of action as it will contain the riot and further destruction.
    Therefore, II follows.

    Hence, Only II follows.

  • Question 7
    5 / -1

Statement is given followed by two inferences I and II. You have to consider the statement to be true even if it seems to be at variance from commonly known facts. You have to decide which of the given inferences, if any, follow from the given statement.

Statement: “TV and Mobiles addiction in children has a very bad impact on their overall development”.

    Inferences:

    I. Too much exposure to smart screens can affect the brain development of kids.

II. TV helps in engaging the kids and teach them new skills.

    Solution

The given statement clearly mentions the bad impacts of watching more TVs and phones in children’s overall development which includes the brain development also. Therefore, it can be inferred from the statement that too much exposure to TVs and mobiles can also affect the brain development of kids.

The statement only mentions the negative impact of TV and mobiles not the positive impact. So, the inference II does not follow.

    Thus, only inference I follows.
  • Question 8
    5 / -1

Consider the following question followed by two arguments numbered I and II. Decide which of the arguments is a strong argument.

Should there be awareness programs conducted by local government bodies to educate masses about rainwater harvesting?

    Arguments:

    I. Yes, water is very precious. Awareness must be increased to preserve our natural resources.

II. No, only the green cover must be increased. Rainwater harvesting has been happening naturally for generations.
    Solution

Argument 1: This is strong, because our natural resources are precious and awareness about their conservation should be increased.

Argument 2: This is not strong, because not only green cover but also rain water should be conserved.

Hence, “only argument 1” is strong.
  • Question 9
    5 / -1
You bought some groceries and paid the amount. The owner refused to give bill. You will
    Solution

The correct answer is Option 4: Ask him again and register a complaint in consumer forum.

    StatementCorrectnessReasoning
Take the groceries and leave.IncorrectThis shows you lack sense of responsibility. Taking the bill for the items you bought is necessary for various reasons like for exchange and a proof that you bought from there. The shop should definitely provide a bill to all. When you don't even ask for the bill, it shows you take things lightly.
Argue with him and leave with the groceries.IncorrectThis shows you have the power of expression but arguing doesn't solve the problem. Though it is good that you wanted to question him, you chose the wrong way of questioning.
Leave the groceries, take your money and leave.Incorrect

This shows you are not responsible. You knew it was wrong so, you just took the money and left. It shows you lack the courage to question him and the determination to solve the problem.

Ask him again and register a complaint in consumer forum.

CorrectThis shows you have a sense of responsibility and determination. You have asked the bill again, which shows you wanted to resolve the problem. Then you registered a complaint which shows you have the determination to solve the problem. It also shows you have a sense of responsibility for others.
