The doctor advised him taking a course of antibiotics.

    Solution

According to grammar, The verbs advise, allow forbid and permit are followed by a gerund when they have no object but when they have the object we have to use an infinitive.

The concept behind it is→ the verbs given are transitive verbs hence after these verbs we have to write an object the object can only be a noun/pronoun/gerund. Whenever we don't have an object after these verbs then, write a gerund to make an object, and whenever an object is written write an infinitive, and the verb, which is written with the preposition 'to' i.e. 'to + v1', is written for the object of the main verb.

Correct sentence: The doctor advised him to take a course of antibiotics.

    1. She has played a ________ role in the film.

    2. The RBI has done a ________  job in preventing a crisis in the NBFC sector.

    Solution

We should find out an adjective to qualify the nouns 'role' and 'job'. So, we should eliminate options A, C, and D.

The article 'a' is used before the blank. So we cannot choose 'attractive' which is an adjective. Therefore, 'commendable' is the only word that fits here.

The meaning of the word 'commendable' is 'praiseworthy or admirable'.

    Complete sentences:

She has played a commendable role in the film.

The RBI has done a commendable job in preventing a crisis in NBFC sector.

    1. Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) was ________ by Dorabji Tata on 26 August 1907.

    2.  In 1990, TISCO began to expand, and ________ its subsidiary, Tata Inc., in New York.

    Solution

Past tense is used in both sentences. Therefore, options (A) and (B) should be eliminated.

A company cannot be 'clarified' or 'appointed'. Thus, options (D) and (E) should be eliminated. So, 'established' is the only word that fits here appropriately.

The meaning of the word 'established' is 'set up or brought into being or laid the foundation of something'.

    Complete sentences:

Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) was established by Dorabji Tata on 26 August 1907.

    1. The pandemic has made more than half of industry ________ negative growth.

    2. She came inside the room to ________ her child.

    Solution

In the second sentence the preposition 'to' is used. Therefore, verb1 should be used after the preposition. Clearly, options (A), (B), (C), and (E) should be eliminated.

So, 'embrace' is the only word that fits well in both blanks.

The word 'embrace' means  'to hold in one's arms or to accept something'.

    Complete sentences:

The pandemic has made more than half of the industry embrace negative growth.

She came inside the room to embrace her child.

    By learning basic plant anatomy

    (P) but also in knowing where to look for them in the guide

    (Q) telling species apart

    (R) proficient not only in

    (S) one can soon become

    Solution

    The correct sequence is SRQP.

    (S) explains the possible consequence of learning basic plant anatomy.

It is followed by (R) which says what can one "become", the word which is stated in (S).

"Not only" is followed by "but also" therefore (R) is followed by (P), but since the object of "not only" is mentioned in (Q), (P) comes after (Q).

So, the correct sentence is: "By learning basic plant anatomy one can soon become proficient not only in telling species apart but also in knowing where to look for them in the guide".

    (P) Making the air flow is the best way

    (Q) faster and smoother

    (R) better over the car

    (S) to make the car go

    Solution

    The correct sequence is RPSQ.

Thus, (R) has to be the first part. (P) and (S) are mandatory pairs as they make logical sense (Q) carries the words which describe how the car goes. Thus, (Q) comes after (P) and (S).

So, the correct sentence is: "Making the airflow is the best way better over the car to make the car go faster and smoother".

    (P) is friendly when approached

    (Q) at her phone, almost as if she

    (R) wants to avoid the crowd but

    (S) she seems reticent, staring down

    Solution

    The correct sequence is SQRP.

The first part must be (S) as none of the rest makes any sense. It introduces the subject of the sentence.

    (Q) must follow (S) as it mentions what she stares down at. (R) completes what she looks like. and (P) must follow (R) as the contrast after the conjunction ‘but’ is mentioned here.

    So, the correct sentence is-

She seems reticent, staring down at her phone, almost as if she wants to avoid the crowd but is friendly when approached.
