    Directions For Questions

Direction: Read the following passage and answer the question given below. Some words may be highlighted read carefully.

Indian economy is directly related to the volatile price of oil. At an international meeting of ministers a few weeks ago, the Prime Minister urged the ministers to reduce the cost of energy to help the global economy recover. The minister also called for a review of payment terms, advising the partial use of the rupee instead of the U.S. dollar to pay for oil, in order to lessen the burden on oil-importing countries in the wake of the strengthening of the dollar. With the majority of its oil demand being met through imports, India clearly has a lot at stake as oil prices have risen considerably in rupee terms in the last few years. Speaking at the same event, one of the foreign ministers refused to openly commit to lower oil prices. He instead said that the price of oil could have been much higher but for the efforts taken by his country to boost supply. This is not surprising given the absence of significant rival suppliers in the global oil market willing to help out India. One more suggested solution to the oil problem is to utilize the domestic sources of energy supply and encourage consumers to switch to green alternatives. This should be backed by a stronger policy framework and implementation. The government should try to diversify its international supplier base to manage sudden surprises better. The government should also not ignore the risks associated with this. It will take quite a long to free the economy off oil imports. Hence, the government should think beyond the next election to end the country’s excessive reliance on oil for its development.

Which among the following is a short-term step that should be taken by the government in order to address the issues regarding oil supply in the country?

    Solution

According to the passage, "The government....the risks associated with this."

It is clear from the above lines that the government should diversify its supplier base.

The fourth option correctly explains that India should include more countries in the international supplier base.

Other options are out of context and not even mentioned in the passage.

A new study on access to healthcare facilities shows that rural areas remain significantly underdeveloped in terms of health infrastructure. About half the people in India and over three-fifths of those who live in the rural areas have to travel beyond five kilometers to reach a healthcare center. ______________.These urban residents, who only make up 28% of the population, are enjoying access to 66% of India’s hospital beds. Insufficiencies in public healthcare have driven people across socio-economic strata to private healthcare leading to affordability challenges. Healthcare needs to be a critical priority for the Indian government to close the gap between aspiration and reality.

    Solution

Option (E) is correct as it tells us that urban centers have a higher availability of healthcare and the next sentence provides us with the statistics related to the same.

Directions: In the given questions, parts of the sentence are separated as (A), (B), (C) and (D). Of these, the positions of two or more parts may be incorrect and need to be exchanged to make the sentence correct. Find the parts which need to be exchanged. In case the given sentence is correct, your answer should be ‘No improvement’.

InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., which runs India’s support (A) airline IndiGo has placed an order (B) for 300 A320neo family aircraft worth (C) over $33 billion (₹2,31,000 crore) in list price to biggest (D) its growth plans.

    Solution

In part (D) of the statement, it can be said that superlative form will not come after TO.

To + v1 is a construction that can occur.

(D)need to be swapped and in the option, we have a choice of (A)and (C).

(D)and (C)can not be the answer because we need THE before Biggest and (C)doesn't conatin THE in its part.

(A)and (D)can be the answer because of (TO + v1 and After the possessive case, we don't need THE before superlative case).

    Directions For Questions

Direction: Given below is a statement that has been divided into four parts. Among the parts- (A), (B), (C), and (D), find the erroneous part(s). If the sentence has no error, choose ‘No error’ as your answer.

    If I was (A)/ a millionaire, (B)/ I would never (C) / work again. (D)/ No error (E)

    Solution

In the first part of the given sentence, the use of the verb 'was' is incorrect. The phrase "if I was" is only acceptable in conditional past-tense sentences which indicates that one action in the sentence depends on another. The phrase "if I was" always comes before an adjective phrase that further describes the speaker, the word 'was' indicates that the situation is likely and realistic.

Example: I apologize if I was rude.

To describe a hypothetical or doubtful situation, also known as the subjunctive mood, we use the phrase "if I were".

Unlike sentences with "if I was," these are cases that are contrary to current fact.

    For Example:

I would focus on foreign policy if I was the president. (wrong)

I would focus on foreign policy if I were the president. (right)

Therefore, the verb 'were' should be used in place of the verb 'was'.

Correct sentence: If I were a millionaire, I would never work again.

    Directions For Questions

He would rather to finish his part of the task (A)/ and leave for a vacation in the mountains than drag (B)/ it for the entire week; that's his way of doing (C)/ work which sometimes takes a toll on his career. (D)/ No error (E)

    Solution

The error lies in part A.

In Part A, the use of the preposition ‘to’ before the verb ‘finish’ is wrong.

According to the rule, the infinitive is used without ‘to’ after let, bid, hear, make, dare, need, see, rather than, had better, would rather, sooner than, may, might, will, shall, can, must, would, should, could, etc.

Therefore, ‘would rather finish’ should be used instead of ‘would rather to finish’ to make the sentence correct.

So, the correct sentence is-“He would rather finish his part of the task and leave for a vacation in the mountains than drag it for the entire week; that's his way of doing work which sometimes takes a toll on his career”.

To drive a car on bumpy roads and in the hilly (A)/ regions made Sachet an efficient driver based on which(B)/ he can apply for numerous jobs- one of them (C)/ being under travel agencies by taking tourists on car rides. (D)/ No error (E)

    Solution

    Theerror lies in part A.

In the given sentence, ‘made’ is the main verb.

In Part A, the use of the infinitive ‘to drive’ is wrong.

The given sentence starts with an emphasis on the noun ‘car’; hence, a gerund should be used instead.

It indicates that ‘driving’ is not a verb here but a verb form changed into a gerund.

Therefore,‘driving’ should be used instead of ‘to drive’ to make the sentence correct.

So, the correct sentence is- “Driving a car on bumpy roads and in the hilly regions made Sachet an efficient driver based on which he can apply for numerous jobs- one of them being under travel agencies by taking tourists on car rides”.
