Biodiversity and its Conservation Test 3

Kaziranga National Park is the name to exemplify the most popular conservation efforts to save the endangered species like one- horned rhinoceros in India. Located in the Golaghat and Nagaon district of Assam, this most notable wildlife sanctuary is being declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 1985.

The giant panda is perhaps the most powerful symbol in the world when it comes to speciesconservation. Adored around the world, the distinctive black and white animal is a national treasure in China and has been the symbol of WWF since its formation in 1961.

Biodiversity is measured at different levels of biological set up together with genes, species and ecosystems along with their interactions. There are a total of 34 biodiversity hotspots in the world, among which the Eastern Himalayan (EH) range is one of the richest with nearly 750,000 sq. km area covering Nepal, Bhutan, and the Indian states of West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, southeast Tibet (China) and northern Myanmar.

Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is an intergovernmental scientific programme, launched in 1971 by UNESCO, that aims to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments.

Biodiversity is being threatened by reduction in space, smaller and fragmented habitat, over exploitation by human, cliamtic change, etc. Sacred grooves are especially useful in conserving rare and threatened species.
