  • Question 1
    1 / -0

The following question has four choices, out of which ONLY ONE is correct.

C-Cl bond is stronger than C-I bond because

    Solution

    (i) C - Cl bond length is shorter than C - I bond length because chlorine atom is smaller in size as compared to iodine atom.
(ii) C - Cl bond is more ionic than C - I bond because of greater difference in electronegativities of C and Cl as compared to that of carbon and iodine.
(iii) More ionic character of bond, more will be its strength.

    ∴ C - C1 bond is stronger than C - 1 bond because C - Cl bond is more ionic than C - L

  • Question 2
    1 / -0

Which of the following has the highest melting point?

    Solution

Para-isomeric dihalobenzene has the highest melting point as compared to ortho-and meta-isomeric dihalobenzenes. It is due to the symmetry of para-isomer that fits in crystal lattice better as compared to ortho-and meta-isomer dihalobenzenes.

    Directions For Questions

The question consists of two statements: Assertion and Reason. While answering the question, you are required to choose any one of the following four responses.

    ...view full instructions

Assertion: o-Dichlorobenzene is more soluble in organic solvents than the corresponding p-isomer.
Reason: o-Dichlorobenzene is polar, while p-dichlorobenzene is not.

    Solution

p-Dichlorobenzene being more symmetrical than o-isomer fits closely in the crystal lattice and hence, greater amount of energy is needed to break the crystal lattice. Thus, p-isomer is less soluble than o-isomer.

Hence, both Assertion and Reason are true, but Reason is not a correct explanation of Assertion.
