Which of the following amino acids can be synthesised in the body?

    Solution

Amino acids which can be synthesised in the body are called non-essential amino acids.

    Examples: Alanine, glycine, proline etc.

Amino acids which cannot be synthesised in the body are called essential amino acids.

Examples: Lysine, valine, leucine, phenyl alanine etc.

The electronic configuration of the atom having maximum difference in the first and second ionisation energies is:

    Solution

There is a quantum increase in the successive ionisation energies if the element acquires a stable configuration in the previous step.

Alkali metals have one electron in the valence shell and acquire a stable octet configuration on the removal of the outermost electron. Hence, there is a quantum increase in the second ionisation energy.

Option (1) shows the electronic configuration of Na, and with the removal of one electron it acquires the configuration of Neon. Therefore, it shows maximum difference in the first and second ionisation energies.

Among the metals - Cr, Fe, Mn, Ti and Mg - the one that cannot be obtained by reduction of its metal oxide by aluminium is

    Solution

The metal that acts as a reducing agent should have a lower reduction potential than the substance getting reduced.

Since the reduction potential of Mg [Eo(Mg2+; Mg) = -2.37 V] is less than that of Al [Eo(Al+3; Al) = -1.66 V], it cannot be obtained by reduction of its compounds using Al.

Which of the following is a set of elastomers?

    Solution

    - Buna S, Buna N and Neoprene, all are the examples of elastomers.

    - Nylon 66 and Terylene are the examples of fibres while Bakelite is an example of thermosetting polymers.

The compound needed for gravimetric estimation of copper (II) is:

    Solution

Gravimetric analysis a technique used to estimate the percentage of a given element in an alloy or an impure sample.

The percentage of copper in an alloy containing copper is determined by adding slight excess of NH4SCN to the alloy in a slightly acidic medium and a reducing agent like H2SO3.

Copper will be precipitated as CuSCN (solubility product Ksp = 12.7). This means that Cu2+ ions will be reduced to Cu+ before they are precipitated using SCN-.

    2Cu2+ + HSO3- + H2O → 2Cu+ + HSO4- + 2H+

    Cu+ + SCN→ CuSCN

Accepting the definition that an acid is a proton donor, the acid in the reaction: NH3 + H2O → NH4+ + OH- is

    Solution

According to the Lowry Bronsted concept of acids and bases, an acid is a proton donor and a base is a proton acceptor. In the given reaction, H2O is an acid and OH- ion is its conjugate base.

    NH3 + H2O → NH4+ + OH-
