  • Question 1
    1 / -0

    The difference between compound interest and simple interest at the same rate for Rs. 5000 for 2 years is Rs. 72. The rate of interest per annum is

    Solution

    For the first year,

    SI = 50R and CI = 50R

    For the second year,

    SI = 50R and CI =( 5000+50R)R*1 / 100

    Difference of 72 is due to the difference in the second year.

     (50 +R/2 )R - 50R = 72

    R2/2 = 72

    R = 12%

  • Question 2
    1 / -0

    Milk and water are mixed in the ratio 4 : 1 to form solution A and in the ratio 3 : 2 to form solution B. A man takes equal quantities of solutions A and B and mixes them together. What is the ratio of quantities of milk to that of water in the mixture so formed?

    Solution

    Let quantity of solutions A and B be 1 litre each.

    Therefore, milk in solution A is 4 /5  and milk in solution B is 3/5 .

    Therefore, total milk = 4/5 +  3/5= 7/5

    Hence, the ratio of milk to water = 7/5  : 3/5  = 7 : 3

  • Question 3
    1 / -0

    The average age of a couple was 26 years at the time of their marriage. After 11 years of marriage, the average age of the family, with 3 children, becomes 19 years. What is the average age of each child?

    Solution

    Total age of the couple at the time of marriage = 26 x 2 = 52

    Total age of family after 11 years = 5 x 19 = 95

    Total age of couple after 11 years = (26 + 11) x 2 = 74

    Total age of children = 95 - 74 = 21

    Average age of each child = 21/3 = 7 years

  • Question 4
    1 / -0

    100 men are to sit in a room, which is 25 m long and 9.8 m wide. If a man needs 12.25 cubic metres of air space, then the minimum height of the room should be

    Solution

    The volume of air required for 100 men is 100 x 12.25.

     Volume of the room = 25 x 9.8 x h

    25 x 9.8 x h = 100 x 12.25

    h = 5 m

  • Question 5
    1 / -0

    Six examiners, working 5 hours a day, can check 750 answer books in 8 days. At the same rate of checking, in what period of time can 4 examiners examine 800 answer books by working 8 hours a day?

    Solution

    Number of days = 8 x 6/4 * 800 /750 * 5/8 = 8 days

  • Question 6
    1 / -0

    In a bag, there are coins of 20 paise, 25 paise and 50 paise in the ratio 5 : 4 : 2. If the total amount in the bag is Rs. 24, then how many 20 paise coins does the bag contain?

    Solution

    Take five 20 paise coins, four 25 paise coins and two 50 paise coins which amount to Rs. 3.

    24/3 = 8 times

    Thus, the number of 20 paise coins = 5 x 8 = 40

  • Question 7
    1 / -0

    The floor of the rectangular room of size 10 m (length) x 8.5 m (width) x 8.5 m (height) is to be carpeted, so as to leave a margin of 1.25 m from all sides. What would be the area of the carpet required?

    Solution

    We are leaving a margin of 1.25 on the floor, then the area to be carpeted would be

    = (10 - 2(1.25)) x (8.5 - 2(1.25))

    = 7.5 x 6

    = 45 m2

  • Question 8
    1 / -0

    A trader mixes two varieties of tea costing Rs. 40 per kg and Rs.50 per kg in the ratio 5 : 4. If the mixture is sold at Rs. 48 per kg, then what is the gain percentage?

    Solution

    Let us take the two variables as 5 kg and 4 kg.

    5(40) + 4(50) = Rs. 400

    Since the cost of mixture of 9 kg at 48 per kg.

    SP = 48 x 9 = 432

    Hence, profit % = 432-400 / 400 *100 = 8%
