    If r is the radius of the circle given below, then what is the area of the shaded region?

    Solution

  • Question 2
    1 / -0

    A car travels a distance of 840 km at a uniform speed. If the speed is 10 kmph more, it takes 2 hours less to cover the same distance. What was the original speed of the car?

    Solution

    If the original speed of the car was x kmph, then

    840/x  - 840 / x+10  = 2

    x = 60

  • Question 3
    1 / -0

    The LCM and HCF of two positive numbers is 2000 and 100, respectively. If both the numbers are 3-digit numbers, then what is the difference between them?

    Solution

    2000 / 100 = 20

    20 has to be a product of two co-prime factors, i.e. 4 and 5.

    Thus, the numbers are 400 and 500.

    Difference = 100

  • Question 4
    1 / -0

    After spending 25% of the monthly salary on food, 12% on rental, 8% on travelling, 10% on education, 15% on clothing and 20% on entertainment, a person is left with Rs. 500. What must be his monthly salary?

    Solution

    Total spending = (25 + 12 + 18 + 10 + 15 + 20)% = 90%

    Thus, his saving is 10%.

    10% of salary = Rs. 500

    Salary = Rs. 5000

  • Question 6

    What is the minimum interval of time when one's birthday would fall on the same day of the week?

    Solution

    The solution for this question becomes a little complex when considering leap year, rather than non-leap year.

    Number of days in an year = 365 days

    Since a week has 7 days, 52 weeks means 52 * 7 or 364 days, that leaves one day out.

    That means, one's birthday day shifts by one day each year. If it was on a Monday this year, it will be on Tuesday next year. Coming to leap year, which has an extra day, birthday day will shift two days during a leap year. If it was on Tuesday this year, it will jump to Thursday next year. So, for every 5 years, the birthday day will be repeated, considering the first and last are leap years. It can be either 5, 6, 7, 11 or 12 years.

  • Question 7

    How many cubes, each of side 8 cm, can be cut from a cuboidal wooden block of dimension 40 cm 20 cm 10 cm?

    Solution

    V1 = Volume = 8= 512 cm3

    V = 40 x 20 x 10 = 8000 cm3

    ⇒ 8000 / 512  = 15.625

    i.e. The maximum number of cubes that we can cut the given cuboidal wooden block into cube of side 8 cm is 15.

  • Question 8

    Kamal started a business with Rs. 20000. After some time, Purnima joined her with Rs. 40000. At the end of the year, profit was divided between them in the ratio 6 : 7. After how many months Purnima joined the business?

    Solution

    Given:

    Kamal’s investment = Rs. 20000

    Purnima’s investment = Rs 40000

    The ratio of profit = 6 : 7

    Now,

    Let Purnima joined the business after x months.

    So, Purnima's money was invested for (12 − x) months.
