    I. Nikita invested an amount which was 150% of the amount invested by Sharmila.
II. The amount invested by Sharmila is 2/3rd of the amount invested by Nikita.

    Solution

    From statement I,
The amounts invested by Nikita and Sharmila are in the ratio 3 : 2.
    Therefore, Nikita's share in the profit = 50,000 × (3/5) = 30,000

    From statement II,
Amount invested by Sharmila = 2/3rd of Nikita's investment
    Therefore, investment of Nikita : Investment of Sharmila = 1 : (2/3) = 3 : 2
    Nikita's share in the profit = 50,000 × (3/5) = 30,000

Therefore, both the statements individually are sufficient to answer the question.

    What is the two-digit number?

    I. The difference between the two digits of the number is 0.
II. The sum of the two digits of the number is 8.

    Solution

    I. It gives difference between the digits, i.e. x – y = 0.
    Or, x = y

    II. It gives the sum of digits, i.e. x + y = 8.
    ∴ x = y = 4

Hence, both I and II are necessary to answer the question.

    What is Supriya's present age?

    I. Supriya is three years older than Priya.
    II. The ratio between Priya's and Reshma's ages is 3 : 4.

    Solution

    From I,
Let Priya's present age be x years.
    Therefore, Supriya's present age = (x + 3) years

    From II,
    Priya's present age : Reshma's present age = 3 : 4

But we do not have any other relation between Priya's age and Reshma's age to determine the exact age of Priya. Hence, we cannot decide the present age of Supriya.

Therefore, the data in both the statements is not sufficient to answer the question.

A boat is travelling. What is the speed of the boat in still water?

    I. The boat travels at a speed of 4 km/hr while going upstream.
II. The boat travels at a speed of 6 km/hr while going downstream.

    Solution

    The speed of boat in still water is (6 + 4)/2 = 5 km/hr

This can be calculated only when we know both the speeds while going upstream and downstream.

So, both statements I and II together are sufficient to answer the question.

How many marks did Nigam get in Biology?

    I. Nigam got 42 marks in English, which were half of the marks he got in Biology.
II. Nigam's marks in Biology were 14 percent of the total marks he got in all the subjects together.

    Solution

According to the data in statement I,
    Marks in Biology = 2 x 42 = 84

Thus, the data in statement I alone is sufficient to answer.
Statement II gives no indication about the total marks in all other subjects.

Hence, marks in Biology cannot be evaluated.

Thus, statement II is not sufficient.
