The element with atomic number 35 belongs to:

    Solution

Bromine is a p-block element having an atomic number 35. Bromine belongs to group 17 which is known as halogens.

Which one of the following statements regarding Henry's law is not correct?

    Solution

Higher the value of \(\mathrm{K_H}\) at a given pressure, higher is the solubility of the gas in the liquids regarding Henry's law is not correct.

  • Question 3

An aqueous solution contains an unknown concentration of \(\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}\). When \(50 \mathrm{~mL}\) of a \(1 \mathrm{M}\) solution of \(\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4\) is added, \(\mathrm{BaSO}_4\) just begins to precipitate. The final volume is \(500 \mathrm{~mL}\). The solubility product of \(\mathrm{BaSO}_4\) is \(1 \times 10^{-10}\). What is the original concentration of \(\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}\) ?

    Solution

    Concentration of \(\mathrm{SO}_4{ }^{2-}\) in \(\mathrm{BaSO}_4\) solution

    \(M_1 V_1=M_2 V_2 \)

    \(1 \times 50=M_2 \times 500 \)

    \(M_2=\frac{1}{10}\)

    For just precipitation

    lonic product \(=\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{sp}}\)

    \(\left[\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}\right]\left[\mathrm{SO}_4{ }^2\right]=\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{sp}}\left(\mathrm{BaSO}_4\right)\)

    \(\left[\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}\right] \times \frac{1}{10}=10^{-10}\)

    \(\left[\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}\right]=10^{-9} \mathrm{M}\) in \(500 \mathrm{~mL}\) solution

    Thus \(\left[\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}\right]\) in original solution

    \((500-50=450 \mathrm{~mL})\)

    \(\Rightarrow \mathrm{M}_1 \times 450=10^{-9} \times 500\)

[ where \(\mathrm{M}_1=\) Molarity of original solution]

    \(\mathrm{M}_1=\frac{500}{450} \times 10^{-9}=1.11 \times 10^{-9} \mathrm{M}\)

Which of the following statements about acid strength is false?

    Solution

\(\mathrm{HIO}_4>\mathrm{HBrO}_4>\mathrm{HCIO}_4\) statements about acid strength is false.

Oxygen is more electronegative than chlorine. With an increase in the number of \(\mathrm{O}\) atoms attached to \(\mathrm{Cl}\), more electrons are pulled away from the \(\mathrm{(O - H})\) bond and weaker becomes the \(\mathrm{O - H}\) bond. This increases the acid strength.

    The decreasing order of acidic strength is \(\mathrm{HClO} _4> \mathrm{HClO} _3> \mathrm{HClO} _2> \mathrm{HClO}\).

Which of the following compounds is an allyl bromide?

    Solution

    C3H5Bris an allyl bromide.

Allyl Bromide is also known as 3-Bromo-1-propene, 3-Bromopropylene, 3-Bromopropene, 1-Propene, 3-bromo-, Bromallylene, 3-bromoprop-1-ene, Propene with Molecular Formula of C3H5Br and Molecular Weight of 120.9758.

Organic compound having covalent bond is:

    Solution

Organic compound having covalent bond is carbon tetrachloride.

Covalent compound are generally formed between two non--metals. Carbon tetrachloride is covalent compounds and also organic compound. Carbon tetrachloride is a nonpolar covalent compound because the electrons shared by the carbon and chlorine atoms are nearly at the center of the bond. Therefore, the carbon tetrachloride CCl4 is a covalent compound.

Which gas is released by factories and automobiles that is harmful to life?

    Solution
Carbon monoxide is released by factories and automobiles that is harmful to life. Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the most serious air pollutants. It is a colourless and odourless gas, highly poisonous to living beings because of its ability to block the delivery of oxygen to the organs and tissues. It is produced as a result of incomplete combustion of carbon. Carbon monoxide is mainly released into the air by automobile exhaust. Other sources, which produce CO, involve incomplete combustion of coal, firewood, petrol, etc.

On addition of small amount of \(\mathrm{KMnO}_4\) to concentrated \(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4\), a green oily compound is obtained which is highly explosive in nature. Identify the compound from the following.

    Solution

\(\mathrm{KMnO}_4\) is the strong oxidizing agent. When a small amount of \(\mathrm{KMnO}_4\) is treated with \(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4\), then \(\mathrm{Mn}_2 \mathrm{O}_7\) is formed.

    \(2 \mathrm{KMnO}_4(\mathrm{~s})+2 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4(\mathrm{aq})\rightarrow 2 \mathrm{KHSO}_4(\mathrm{~s})+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}(\mathrm{aq})+\mathrm{Mn}_2 \mathrm{O}_7(\mathrm{aq})\)

\(\mathrm{Mn}_2 \mathrm{O}_7\) is a green-colored volatile compound that is explosive in nature.

\(\mathrm{Mn}_2 \mathrm{O}_7\) becomes explosive in nature at \(55^{\circ} \mathrm{C}\) or above.

Which of the following does not give a silver mirror test with Tollen's reagent?

    Solution

Sucrosedoes not give a silver mirror test with Tollen's reagent.

Silver mirror test with Tollen's reagent is given by the molecule which contains an aldehyde group. But, sucrose has no aldehyde group and the rest of the molecule have an aldehyde group. Hence, glucose, fructose, and lactose, each gives a silver mirror test except sucrose.

Which of the following statements is correct for fibres?

    Solution

Fibers can be repeatedly stretched more than \(500\%\) of its original size and can also recover back; immediately to its original size and shape once the tension is relaxed. Fibres possess high tensile strength and high modulus. Fibres impart crystalline nature. Characteristic features of fibres are due to strong intermolecular forces like hydrogen bonding. Fibers used in clothing are used to cover the body, to protect our body, etc.
